App Store Grift
UPDATE: I believe that Patreon's iOS app will now offer you the choice of completing the transaction outside the app, on the web, thereby bypassing the Apple surcharge.
If you want to sign up to my Patreon - and why wouldn't you, crammed as it is with hot content, please make sure you sign up via the website, as new signups via the Apple app store Patreon app are now subject to a 1/3 surcharge, payable to Apple.
Nothing changes for existing subscribers. But if you perhaps take a break, then re-sign up, do it on the website, not the app.
THAT IS ALL.
THAT IS NOT ALL:
Thank you to everyone who supports me via the Patreon. Were it not for this support during a few pretty awful years, the webcomics would not have continued.

The subscription fee I was offered was 30% higher in the app. I had fortunately already seen the web rate and subscribed from there. I don’t know if there was an option to skip the Apple luxury tax but I definitely didn’t see one.
Camille I think it is still hard to see the option (which may just be a link to take you outside of the app). I recommend cancelling on the app and using the website to subscribe. That way there is no chance of the apple tax in future months. Many apologies for the inconvenience.
Lovely! It's either jolly good or ripping good (I can't decide.)
Thank you, John - you have provided many hours of delight.
Thank YOU for decades of comics excellence. I just spent a week rereading the Bad Machinery-archives, and what an incredible treasure throve that is!
I just got an email, allegedly from Patreon, offering 10% off for a year-long membership. Do you know anything about that?
Yes - I turned on annual subscriptions as several readers had requested them. There is no need to act if the offer does not appeal to you!
I'm always very happy to support you.
It hurts seeing the string of bad luck that’s been thrown your way since the decade started. I’m glad to have been of support.
I am horrified at the loathsomeness of Apple's grift here. And concerned about those "few pretty awful years" that Mr Allison mentions. Maybe I can find him a few extra groats, somehow. ...
reading your comics has been a huge joy to me, so thank you for making em
I remember when you ran an experiment many years ago when you let people just give you money. When I heard about Patreon a few years later, it made total sense. I imagine I speak for a lot of us when I say we're happy to do what we can to support you in exchange for all the joy you've brought us over the years. Also, fuck Apple for this and a host of other reasons.
Ah, I had heard some vague rumours. Thanks for the clarification.
A very timely reminder since I had to restart my membership after putting too many things on my credit card and my payment not going through! I presume Apple also like to take money when people do that.
