Music Saturday

A friend asked me to make an hour-long playlist for him, and I obliged by filling it with the kind of music I love best, music which doesn't really get into my albums of the year lists because it's almost all singles. We're talking very programmed, extremely melodic late-80s/early 90s dance songs. I share it here for the few people who may enjoy it.

I read an interesting interview with Questlove from The Roots where he said, and I paraphrase, that what has vanished from most contemporary popular Black music is the sound of the church. I am not religious but as a teenager, and even now, I find that frisson between the spiritual and secular in music the most exciting sound imaginable - in any genre.

Jane Child. "Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time"

I think that song is the absolute peak of a sort of radio-friendly sonic sandpaper. Every sound in it is just a hair short of too abrasive to tolerate. Her look with the trenchcoat, foot high hair and nose chain was the same. A masterclass in understanding pop culture in 1990. What a song.

Wow. I'd have selected pretty much the same. Did you ever listen to the Perri sisters? They crop up in bg vox a lot in late 80s/90s but their albums are great. https://open.spotify.com/album/4Sbuk3K3aywBNSCFHFTt2F?si=Pjd7t1HOSfikTRY0R67vRQ is probably the best known but they're all good. Revalation with Yellowjackets is also super - https://open.spotify.com/track/791OIl2Xo0z0wuEc3gVUxJ?si=9606fe3451d14ebd
