Comic drawing time-lapse
I made a nice time-lapse video of my drawing a page last month, a page that I don't think you'll ever get to see in context now. Part 3 of Conan featured Little Claire, or "Clara", as Chief Shailey's chief handmaiden. What is going on with Glenn here... you will just have to guess.

That was mesmerizing... and frustrating at the same time knowing that I will not get to see part 3.
Absolutely fascinating, thank you! I’m curious why you sketched clockwise and then inked counterclockwise. Just adding some variety?
Good question! I only ever ink the backgrounds out of order. If the foregrounds involve a lot of concentration, I give myself a bit of a mental rest by inking the easiest bgs first. My pencils aren't very tight so I have to stay pretty dialled-in when I ink the figures. Some artists pencil super-tight (in some cases, doing it twice) so the inks are just tracing and they can zone out. I'm still very engaged as I ink.
Parts of this remind me of how old ZX Spectrum games would draw the scenery (The Hobbit, maybe?) - it's very soothing
I know exactly what you mean! Doomdark's Revenge type of thing!
If your patreon was nothing more than one of these a month I'd be happy. How long did this take in real life from start to finish (including tea breaks obvs)?
Three hand a half hours I think.
Red eyes don't really suit Ygln, I'm a-thinkin'.
I’ve been trawling through the early Bobbins comics ro get my fix during this time of Allison withdrawal and it’s both really satisfying and astonishing to see the progression of artistic skill in all dimensions. Bobbins is still delightful and a charming read, but it’s a wholly different product by a wholly different artist. The tender sprout that has become a towering sequoia
Really impressive visual stuff! But isn't Claire traditionally a dangerous individual? This sitch you're dropping here is, like, totally fraught!
Watching how you get the figures nailed down just right in the panels in only one or two attemps fills me with both immense awe and extreme jealousy.
I think you have a much broader visual repertoire to draw on than me, so you've got more options - which can be hard! Based on what's in my thumbnail drawing, there might only be one or two ways I can draw a figure to communicate what I want. The problems start when I look at that figure and it doesn't quite get there, because I often don't have anywhere else to go. Every few pages I'll draw something that would have passed muster five years ago but now looks rote and i have to try to push through with lots of different figures.
I'm mesmerized by how you handle your backgrounds and place your figures in them.
It comes from working digitally. I've tried to do comics on paper recently, and I've been working this way for so long, background first when it's a complex space, that I really struggled to even draw one good panel traditionally. The paper fills up with lines and I've got no clean space to draw my figures. I try to do it the opposite way, rough outlines of the background, then figures, then fill in the rest, and by comparison it looks like I've had some sort of life-changing brain injury. This isn't hyperbole.
That's a wonderful insight into the master's craft.
Can't Shelly go back in time an buy the trademark before the trolls get it?
Love this. Really, change Conan's name to Doyle (get it? get it? I'm so funny) and change one of his signature colors, like making his hair red or his skin green, and FINISH THE COMIC! Please.
Will, i made a rule this week and my response to all suggestions I do this is FUCK CONAN. It's not personal. Not one more minute wasted on this project.
So annoyed that we will never find out the secret of the blood egg!
That is super cool. Thank you for sharing. Love process stuff.
Turns out Glenn is allergic to blood eggs.
Glerm shouldn't be eating those things.
John you tease
