March 2026 Preview: the Wrath of Marduk!

Introducing the Hobgoblin War Elephant

Today we will unveil the Hobgoblin War Elephant, a brand new centerpiece of the Hobgoblin range and one of the most ambitious miniatures we have ever created at Highlands Miniatures.

The War Elephant

War elephants have captured the imagination of warriors and historians for millennia. From the ancient armies of Mesopotamia and Persia to the legendary campaigns of the Ayyubid Sultanate, these magnificent beasts have served as living siege engines, symbols of power, and instruments of terror on countless battlefields.

For the Hobgoblin War Elephant, we wanted to create something truly spectacular, a centerpiece miniature that would dominate any battlefield and showcase the wealth, power, and martial prowess of the Hobgoblin warlords. The design draws heavily from historical war elephant traditions of the Middle East and Persia, combined with the distinctive aesthetic we have established for the Hobgoblin range.

The Hobgoblin War Elephant is designed over a 100x150mm square base and it comes with two available heads, with and without protective gear.

The Howdah

The towering howdah is the visual centrepiece of this miniature, inspired by the ornate war towers carried by elephants in Persian and Arab armies. The architecture features distinctly Middle Eastern elements: the pointed arches, the latticed screens (mashrabiya), the onion domes topped with crescent moons, and the elegant minarets at each corner.

The Hobgoblin War Elephant is crewed by a brand new set of Hobgoblins: three archers, one spearmen and a mahout thats sits upon the elephant's neck.

The perfect Horde Filler

The Hobgoblin War Elephant is designed to be the ultimate centerpiece for any Hobgoblin army that also works as a Horde Filler. The verticality of the miniature creates an imposing silhouette that will tower over the battlefield and combines perfectly with a horde of Hobgoblins.

This miniature represents everything we love about creating fantasy armies: the opportunity to take historical inspiration and push it into something truly fantastical, while maintaining the coherent visual identity that makes a fantasy army feels unique.

The Hobgoblin War Elephant comes split in pieces, but due to the size of the creature, it may not be suitable for certain small printers at the default 32mm heroic scale.

The only thing missing as an elite unit. Like the Persian Immortals. That would be so cool.

I second the "request" for an elite infantry unit.

Absolutely beautiful model! I would 100% pay extra to see more options explored for this later down the line, different howda designs, bare back, etc.

Does that still only count as one?

This is amazing!!! Thank you so much. I know you're not crazy about sculpting large models/monsters but you've knocked this out of the park

Appreciate the support Joshua! It is certainly a very time consuming thing to sculpt but I'm glad you guys like it!

This is killer! If you ever want to expand the line, a ballista and/or sorcerer platform would be a fun variation, that I’d happily pitch in on a frontier/Kickstarter for.

Glad you like it Jesse! That could be awesome! I have to check if the upcoming Ballista for next month fits on the War Elephant if you dont use the top piece

Oh my. That's going to need more head variants. Two just isn't going to be enough. We're talking Herds here.
