I was never a paying member. I think I was recommended you when joining another channel, and figured It wouldn't hurt to join for free.
Yeah, there's a difference between Public and Free Members. I do wish they had a feature to release content for Free Members at a later date and not public.

I follow only a handful of folks and am subscribed to 2 (not a huge user). I pay into those 2 to be in supporter credits and discounts on merch drops mostly. Was drawn in to follow but tbh haven’t connected enough beyond that.
I think more free content or engagement with free followers would encourage folks to join. More likely for people to see and connect with your stuff to get invested. I can’t speak for everyone but for me I’m more likely to invest in something I’m passionate about, not the other way around.
Ah, this does work. Not really an original answer, but basically… my budget for patreon (and patreon-adjacent) services is not infinite, and "free" membership is basically a reminder to me. Sometimes accounts goes inactive/change/etc, so I remove some, then pick some other up to fill the gap. It's not even a matter of competition; there's just way too many people I'd like to support out there. It's almost random at this point (to me). (obviously, everything costing more over the year didn't help increase that budget either)
Like the other guy said, there's several patrons i sub to, a couple of which offer a physical sticker or small print being mailed every month for as low as $5 tiers. Usual they are $10. So when you ask $8 without physical it makes it easier to skip

As for your question I’d say the main thing that has me subbed to artist patreons is getting access or getting art in the mail, I have a few where we get early access to the artists shop with a discount code or in other cases an artist will mail out stickers to each Patreon for that month
ah ok, physical goods is a challenge for me, since ironically it would need to be funded, but something better that redbubble is something id like to provide to some extent. SO thanks yeh i will always keep that in mind
