You can definitely see the similar personality traits in Erin and Mary, leaping to conclusions and conjuring up the worst narratives to freak out over. The Clive reveal is hilarious, because you can't imagine how terrifying it would be to be a Protestant and wake up in the middle of the Bogside area of Derry (the most heavily Catholic part of the city). I do like when there's a streak of real sentimentality among the silliness, and Joe's quiet reflection on how perfect his wife was really hit me. Even the way he told Jerry to piss off was borderline warm because he was thinking about his wife.

I'm noticing now this show has a lot in common with Community, of all things. Maybe the setup with a main character group going to class together is obvious, but also Derry is a lot like Greendale where everyone are always extremely serious about everything, from playing paintball to gossiping about grandpa's taste in pastries. And I'm reasonably sure the girls are going to be known to the whole town as "them" much like a certain study group that made "every" anthropology class about their personal lives. I often praise Community for how much work it did to break down and reinvent the rules for what a TV show can do, and then comes Derry Girls and throws out all the rules and turns absolute chaos into comedy from the first episode. You never know what's going to happen next; but I'm happy to be here with you for the ride.
