A Bugs Life (1998) | Watch Along

I have a lot of love and nostalgia for this movie. It's kind of Pixar's forgotten film, most people only seem to remember Toy Stoy when they think of this early era of Pixar, and if people have heard about it, it's often only in the context of the feud with Antz and Dreamworks. But growing up, our house was always an A Bug's Life house, we didn't really watch Toy Story but this one ran up and down the VHS tape at our house. That rabid grasshopper gave me nightmares haha. But it's been a long time since I've watched it and I think I've actually never watched it in English which is funny because I never watch dubbed movies these days, even if I don't speak the original language, I prefer subtitles. But of course as a kid, we watched all these Disney movies dubbed. So it was still kind of a new experience watching this with the original voices, cool to hear familiar voices like Julia Louis-Dreyfus or Richard Kind or Bonnie Hunt. In these early Pixar films, I also always enjoy watching what kind of new animation techniques they were fiddling around with back then, clearly this movie was an early foray into water animation which they extended in Finding Nemo a few years later. I kind of miss this sort of thing these days. Obviously there's still better and worse 3D animation but it feels like basically all technical problems have been solved by now. Nowadays it's rare that you hear new techniques having to be developed apart from sporadic things here and there like the skeleton animation in Coco. But this was fun. I forgot (or never quite realized or they just didn't translate) how quickfire the jokes are. And some light societal critique which is interesting, that isn't otherwise really part of Pixar's identity. I can only think of WALL-E otherwise where they did more of that. Also lmao at Julia Louis-Dreyfus' inability to pronounce warriors, she keeps saying "wawyers" like lawyers, haha.
I think it'd be great for yall to start doin a bunch of animated disney/pixar etc that you haven't seen. I'd say do Mulan to finally see the Dishonor meme.
Great reaction of a great film but you didn’t react to the mid credit out takes! The his was back when Pixar would add those into their films. I wish they’d go back to that as a company honestly.
I love those fake outtakes, they're so fun. I think Monsters Inc. was the last time they did them.
Such an amazing film to teach kids to rise up against thier oppressors love it
