The Sopranos 4x13 | Watch Along

This is my favorite episode of the series but also the hardest for me to watch because my parents divorced when I was 3-4. I’m pretty sure it didn’t go down the way Tony and Carmella fought but I’ve never had the heart to ask why they did. I looked at Carmella’s breakdown as a reaction to her feelings for Furio. She’s known about Tony’s infidelity and she accepted it because Tony would buy her gifts. But once Furio started to give her attention that Tony hadn’t given her in a long time she stated yearning for that more than any piece of jewelry (whitecaps) Tony could buy. She wanted attention more than a house. This season finale was so well written and even better acted. But for me, next season is the best season!!!
Love that Carmela gaslights Tony a little bit in their fight about the money in the birdfeed. It really is absurd he was even hiding money from her in the first place.
As far as I could tell, he wasn't really hiding it from HER per se, he was just hiding it. If he wanted to hide it specifically from her, I think he might have found a better hiding place than literally at the house. And while he obviously likes that she doesn't know exactly how much money he has or makes so that she doesn't how much he's blowing on strippers and gambling and whatnot, I think he also has a point to not tell her too much about his finances in case he gets caught. That last point is something Carmela has always been particularly obtuse about, both wanting the rich mobster wife lifestyle but thinking that can somehow work as a partnership.
I know yall didn't just say nobody got killed in this episode.... 😒 😒😑 SMDH
Edie Falco is outstanding, that scene of Carmela's raw emotion was really powerful !!
"the vanity is the only thing that keeps her safe". that doesn't gel with their established subculture. ritchie pretty much said in season 2 that once there's a ring on the woman, the husband can hit her. he also doesn't care about being "above" his peers in other areas like when it comes to having mistresses, so i don't know why not hitting her would be a point of vanity. it comes more from a personal place. the same thing with his fondness for animals. it's not vanity or a point of pride for him to be different on that front, it's almost pathological, as we saw with the ducks all the way back in the first season. we also see that at the end of the day, when pushed to the limit, tony does placate her. in season 3 when carmela went to the therapist and was on the brink of leaving him, his reaction was more tender and he gave in to her 50k donation. at the end of that same season, melfi implicitly stated that she's the only woman he's been with who's not like his mother. there's a lot of context clues that implies he does love her and his not wanting to get violent with her is more rooted in his psychology and is not image based. none of this is to say tony isn't more in the wrong or that he's not a worse person than her but there's nuance being missed in viewing the conflicted so lopsidedly. tony has brought up what carmela said to him in the mri and that she always goes to her priest, all while we as the audience knows she isn't strong enough to listen to the therapist who told her to leave him and his blood money. he doesn't want to open up to her because she judges him while people like svetlana doesn't.
Tony is obviously more in the wrong here, he's the one who constantly cheats and lies and he's objectively the worse person of the two. But it's a bit superficial to not kind of see Tony's point about Carmela not being satisfied with "a Hyundai and a simple gold heart on a chain". Carmela's a huge hypocrite too, I mean she was ready to move on and forgive when he bought her the house, she even obviously pushed him into it, even though she afterwards rightly assessed the house as "just a bigger version of an emerald ring". But it was just after Irina called that all these feelings came back to the boil for her.
"But it's a bit superficial to not kind of see Tony's point about Carmela not being satisfied with "a Hyundai and a simple gold heart on a chain"." i mean it's almost missing the point to see their fight as very one sided. chase has openly stated carmela IS a gold digger, and it's very clear from her arc that it's a central struggle. tony was absolutely not wrong about that and their hypocrisy was meant to be highlighted together, even if he's more in the wrong. it also results in missing a reason for why tony doesn't try to speak to carmela the same way he does with his mistresses. she judges him while they don't. he brings up what carmela says to him during the mri and that she complains to her priest, all while still taking his blood money. we know he has self-loathing and insecurity due to his upbringing so there's a button that carmela (sparsely, but still cuts deeply when it happens) presses that partially contributes to their disconnect.
I love how carefully the season builds to this crescendo of an episode. In hindsight, with the intense focus on the Tony/Carmela relationship this season, you can see how clever it was to carve out a little time to juxtapose their relationship with that of certified wife guys like Johnny Sack and Bobby Baccala.
This ep ending makes me sad haha
1:10:35 Nobody died? 2 black guys got killed lol
clearly they're talking about main characters
Absolute Cinema 🙌
I think this is probably the best episode of the entire show.
