Like another commenter said, Rita was meant to be seen as a "manic pixie dream girl," a common trope in rom-coms from the early 2000s. Maybe it's because I've never seen any Bond films, but I was never a big fan of the whole Rita story line. Her accent also really annoyed me, although I like that they poked fun at it at the start of episode 5. I loved the kaiju spoof and Annyong reveal, though (plus the reveal that Frank truly cared about Tobias). After Buster sees the fridge has been moved, he says, "If mother sees this she will blow a cow" (instead of "blow a gasket" or "have a cow").
So, it should be obvious that Rita is a parody of the Manic Pixie Dreamgirl trope. Viewed through that lens, the whole storyline is just a sendup of the stiff guy experiences childlike joy with a free-spirited beauty as his guide. Of course, someone who is so carefree might just be suffering from some kind of mental handicap.
Aileen Wuornos was the name of the serial killer that Charlize Theron played in Monster (2003). The role won her an Oscar for Best Actress.
"There may already be a listening device in this room" - and the quick shot of the boom mike just pulling out of frame :)
What's amazing is as much layering as there is and as masterful as they are with having the jokes weave together, there are so many jokes that are destined to be missed. Tony Hale was in a car commercial doing the robot dance while listening to domo arigato mr roboto. And his scene getting the hook stuck in the car is an homage to that.
I never knew that!
The scene in which Buster sits in the stair car singing and dancing to Mr. Roboto by Styx is a reference to a Volkswagen ad from a few years earlier where Tony Hale does literally the same thing: https://youtu.be/otB82sgEqMw?si=v-b4dTHmhXDd14c1
20 years later and to this day me and my core friend group still sing-song voice at eachother "MISTER F" anytime the letter F comes up in something
I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life as during the climax of E5 where it spoofs old 1900's japanese kaiju movies. It's so absurd yet they build up to it perfectly. "Same size, same curly hair" Tobias wasn't talking about the hair on Michael's head.
You are not wrong but I turned to dust readying, '...old 1900's...'
