Firefly 1x14 | Watch Along

I like to think that if the show had gone on, somehow Jubal Early would have returned. Definitely one of the more unique villains I've ever seen.
I love the lore around this show. Everyone i know who has seen it, usually knows at least one of the details about the unjustified cancelation of this show. THEY EVEN BRING IT UP, IN COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SHOWS. The world came together for this show, they talk about it like it was an actual part of history. Like how we talk about the 300 soldiers who stood against a 10,000 man army and made a dent. I am so glad you guys gave this another shot and fell in love. You guys are the best! I'll see you for tha moooovie!!!
I'm pretty dissapointd in you both. When Mal said "No touching guns" and River said "no touching" I expected you to do the George Bluth Sr "NO TOUCHING! NO TOUCHING!"
Chad, you know we gotta get them watching Cowboy Bebop now, right?
Such a bummer that this couldn't get a full 22 episode season. I'm looking forward to watching the movie again. It kinda reminds me of going from the Star Trek TNG TV show to watching a TNG movie. It's a little bit cooler, a little more slick.
I remember when Firefly aired on Fox. I watched Buffy and Angel so I was down for another show by Joss Whedon, especially one he had a lot more creative control over. I remember how frustrating it was that the show kept moving its time slot. So pissed when I missed an episode because I was sleeping when it aired at like 1am. I also remember question why the episodes were airing out of order. All because one Fox exec hated the contract Joss got and sabotaged the show's ratings by moving its time slot and order around. The fans (Browncoats) fought for years to get something to give us some kind of closure. After the movie, a couple years later, we also got comics to flesh out the story. You know, Nathan Fillion was so swamped with fans that he finally told the internet (back when it was Twitter) that if you ever see him IRL, to just nod and say "Capt'n" and he'll understand. He loved his character, as did all the actors. This show created a community that will never let the connection die and the actors saw that in the fans, too. Its incredible to feel like a part of community over a 14 episode (+ movie and comics) show after all these years still. After you watch the movie you can continue story with the comics, btw. The Serenity comics are written by Joss. One of them tells the origin of Book (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). The Firefly comics and novels are written by others. Idk, if they are canon, though.
No one said it yet, so I will. When Jubal licks the catwalk, its where River was standing when she was dropping in on the ship talking about her. And now we can fully talk about how The Message was written to come after this episode. Jayne comments that River is a "reader" casually, and Kaylee and Simon are on a date. These two bits make more sense in the context of happening after this episode.
Fun reaction! I’m glad you ladies enjoyed it. A lot of people walk away disappointed with it.
some thoughts: 1. I find it so interesting that the show set-up everything in 13 episodes that in ep 14- there is a moment (if not longer) that one legitimately wonders 'did River actually turn into Serenity?' 2. I believe this thought is from the DVD commentary - but it has been brought up how River was snuck onto the ship. As we know from the episode when Inara has the Counselor come to the ship, Mal prefers to meet anyone who comes on the ship (this may also have been a ploy to see who Inara was seeing). So, at the end of this episode, River formally asks for permission to come aboard - which Mal grants. Thus, I feel the back half season 1 would have had more of River being integrated into the crew versus her being the outsider/ship passenger she has been. 3. In case you are not aware of how the movie came to be: After Firefly was canceled(dec 2002, the DVD set of the series came out in 2003 and sold very well for a year plus. So well that executives at Universal took notice - The reached out to Whedon to see if he would want to do a movie - he said yes and Serenity was released Sept 2005. So we had a few years in-between the show and the movie (which we never knew we would be getting until we did) 4. Enjoy the Movie!!!... Note: because you love these characters so much, there is as much as an emotional journey with the movie (along with the action) as this is truly the last time we get these characters on screen.
i am unreasonably excited for Serenity as i saw that in cinemas before i even knew firefly was a thing (it was not available on tv for me in australia and with how bad fox bungled it in the US i doubt even cable was playing it). my love for Serenity knows no bounds.
I also had that unusual path to finding the show- had seen ads for reruns for it on the Scifi (now Syfy) channel in the US that didn't really grab my interest, but then saw some word of mouth about the movie being great, I don't even remember if I realized it was the same as the show at the time but when a friend suggested seeing it in theaters I said "sure why not" and had my mind blown, and immediately after bought the series DVDs.
If you were to cosplay as River, would you go combat boots, or bare feet?
Come on bro... 😂
See you for the movie guys, thanks again! It was fun to rewatch with you.
