True Detective Season 1 Episode 1 (MYSTERY WEEK 2026 #6)

This show is largely based on Thomas Ligotti's work. Ligotti is a (cosmic) horror writer and has written one theoretical book on pessimism (The Conspiracy Against The Human Race) which leans heavily on a Norwegian philosopher named Zapffe. Herman Tennessen, from Zapffe's circle, has something to say, which I think is interesting in the context of this patreon: "The fact that a patient is classified as mentally or emotionally sick prevents the psychotherapist from enquiring into the possibility of whether, or to what extent, his patient may be cognitively right. It is perfectly possible that a person with “existential frustration,” “ontological despair,” or simply ‘“sub-clinical depression” may, because of his abnormal condition, be in a better position to look through the camouflage of life that still is deceiving the “healthy” psychotherapists. " - Herman Tennessen, Happiness Is For The Pigs, 1966/67, p. 198. Also, minute 44 of this video, in case you missed it: "I always thought it was just something for children to do. Keep 'em busy. Tell them stories about why they're tying sticks together." as the camera pans to a cross, two sticks tied together. A story to keep us busy - that's the whole point of the underlying philosophy of the show right there. BUT it isn’t simply “religion is fake.” It’s that meaning is a human artifact. Consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution precisely because it forces us to make stories to survive the void, keeps us in a loop of asking questions, that cannot be answered, addressed at something that is indifferent to our existence. Rust’s nihilism is itself one of those stories.

I have to see more

I have watched this but I remember nothing. So go for it. I know that the members really want to watch this.

I forgot how much I liked this show...

Yeah that first season would definitely be worth a watch :)

Hahaha it's so funny, my friend group just started watching this together. We're a ways ahead of you, but I've been minding my toddler while we watch, so I feel like I've missed some important bits 😅 Excited to watch again with everyone here!

T Bone Burnett!!! I'm a fan. 😎👍

forgot how good this season was. it has been a while but dang it is good.

Everyone's gotta give Six Feet Under a chance as well hehe 😋 too bad he can't watch every show 1 day a week so we all get our favorite shows in the loop. ☺️

Each season of True Detectives has different actors. Personally I thought season 4 was really good too but nothing is like the original!!!!

To answer your question, True Detective is a different story each season. McConaughey and Harrelson are the leads for season 1 and the general consensus is that season 1 is the best by far. I agree. Absolute must watch of a season.

Amazing mystery week so far!!! True detective, Fallout, and peaky blinders are all must sees for Tom IMO!

WHOLE REASON I BOUGHT PATREON WAS TO SUGGEST THIS AND WATCH TWD
