Stealing/sharing Patreon content

I've been messaging moderators to ask if posts were allowed and and when I've been told no there not allowed so I've deleted them or accepted my posts get removed and I totally understand xxx

I am devastated by this news, although I suppose I should hardly be surprised. What a sad commentary on human affairs. I respect whatever decision you might make, but please know that this Patreon community has been a lifeline for me, as well as for so many others. I'm homebound for the most part due to illness, and it would be devastating to be cut off from one of the more important of my online communities. But I understand that you have to safeguard your work and its ability to make an impact. For this reason I will quote one of your own characters to you: "Don't let anyone make you disappear. "

I noticed this type of content on social media and at first thought it fan art. Since I was engaging with it more and more started to appear. I think a comment lead me to this patreon. I had no idea this amazing site with direct content and webcomics from you existed. From this post I know now how much damage is done by interacting with those post of stolen content and what to do to help.

I'm so sorry this happened, people suck sometimes. I will be on the lookout for reposters or people trying to steal your content. I hope you're feeling better 💙

I joined your Pateron only this week as I only discovered Heartstopper the beginning of the month. I have quickly gone through all of your works I can get my hands on and rewatched the show multiple times. Your work is something I wish we had more of as teens and you are an inspirational persona. I think lots of habits with sharing works and “excitement” posting online aren’t done with a whole lot of thought to the workload and background knowledge to how sharing paid for works should go. Which is unfortunate considering what goes in. I hope you continue posting here, but I understand doing what is best for you as well. Either way, you’ve earned me as a fan and I will be supportive of your choices! (edit: whelp I realized this post is older than my knowing of the universe you’ve made. I’m grateful you left your page up for me to discover!)

This is beyond devastating news to hear. I'm so sorry, Alice! As a fan, although I am pleased you have ultimately decided to continue forth with things in webcomics format, this is just such a tragic breach of trust and privacy for you as an artist and writer. You've created this deeply meaningful work that have touched and impacted so many, and it is your creative right to retain ownership of everything, including how you chose to distribute it. You have chosen that it is not in its final form, ready for the larger world to consume, yet you have kindly allowed some of us select fans to have a sneak peek. You deserve to have compensation in exchange for that gift and this mass distribution takes away from that. I hope the legal team at your publisher takes care of things, and those responsible learn a valuable lesson.

This makes me angry, I can't believe people are still doing this!? I've been subscribed for years and it would make me super sad if you had to stop this Patreon, it has been a safe space for me, but I'd understand if you did 🙁

Alice- I'm so sorry, and I understand why this is so hurtful to you. People don't seem to understand there isn't content without creators! Creators are human and deserve some respect and consideration. Sending love, and I hope there are people in your life giving you comfort and support.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. In the end you can only do what feels right for you. Unfortunately with your popularity there are clout chasers coming out of the woodwork. If upon further reflection you decide to cancel the Patreon, I would understand and hope that others would as well. Alice, I had the pleasure to chat with you a couple of years ago on how important is this piece of work you do with Heartstopper, and i'm sorry about you having to go through this. Unfortunately there are some dorks that don't understand the effort and the amount of hard work you put together to hand us the comic here in Patreon. Your decision must be done thinking on what is best to you, and I believe everyone here agree with it (though I really enjoy checking the comics here in Patreon) Again, thank you for your hard work, and stay safe!

It's seriously not okay to publicly post other authors content on social media without their permission or if it's copyrighted content. When you said you're not comfortable with publicly posting new content yet, I don't understand how people hear that and still think oh whatever like they won't find out. Yes we will find out and we will take action because you are literally doing illegal things. I hope fewer and fewer people will do this in the long run and soon even if someone dares to post publicly, they will not get any recognition and get taken down immediately. I'm really sorry that you are going through this. I don't share it even with my sister (that is also a fan and the one who introduced Heartstopper to me. I mean, as a latin american I get why people share content online, but in this case it's not a huge corp, as you said, It's a person. The cons of being a huge hit is that people think that the money is going to Netflix. And you're rich (~and white and european~...). Anyway. I hope that you find mechanisms with patreon to ban people from here and to limit/block printscreen. Your work is important and you don't deserve to go through this, but please know that you're not alone. We do support you and your decision, whatever it may be. A side note: I don't understand people that are caught stealing content and are called out for doing so complaining. About what? If you know what you're doing is wrong and you keep doing it for some sense of justice, *please acknowledge that this also have consequences*.

It's infuriating that thieves like this exist and flourish. I've seen it more than a few times before and have noticed one constant: they're not just dishonest, they're also usually talent-free -- their online content is mostly pablum. It's likely they'll never be of any value to the universe unless they can be converted into food. Alice - I think we all agree that your work is too important to lose. I'll be sad if you end up shutting down your Patreon, but I'd much rather have that happen than see the work itself suffer or stop. We'll love you no matter what decision you make.

I'm so sorry this happened. I think it's so generous of you to share this work, period, through publication. It's fantastic that you make it available to fans via Patreon. And it is amazing that you continue to keep it available online via tapas etc so kids (and adults) who cannot access the books (and/or need an earlier dose of content) have access once you're ready to web publish versions of what you share here. You would be well within your rights to wait until the physical books were finished to give readers access. Or whatever you chose. The many points of access you provide are something that fans shouldn't take for granted. I'm so grateful to have access to early pages via Patreon - it's such a gift that you provide that option and also give us a way to feel like we can provide additional support however modest that support may be. I'm also so grateful, as a queer mom, to have this story in the world for my kids and their peers. I love that they get to see cute, healthy, realistic relationships being modeled so well while also addressing important topics (bullying, dating SA, mental health, boundaries, respect, emotional and physical expressions of love, strong friendships, variety of queer characters and relationships, divorce, uni anxiety, etc). I am am also so grateful, as a former confused queer teen, to be able to read the story that I needed but didn't have when I was that age. It is a deeply healing experience, outside of the maternal warmth I feel for the characters and the joy I feel for young ppl reading this - seeing a story of lgbtqa love and friendship, told beautifully and without the flavor of shame-ridden angst with which the very few queer YA stories were told when I was young. I hope that your publisher puts the resources necessary into finding and removing the content stealing accounts, ASAP - - and that they can do so in a way that takes the need for vigilance and action off your plate. Thank you for all you share, including a clear outline of how fans can help should we find any content stealing accounts. ❤️

I sign up for an artist's Patreon explicitly because I want to support their work. I can't fathom signing up with the intention of undermining it. It's different when you're talking about pirating a Disney movie or something that some billion-dollar corporation has already paid some artists to create. But to betray an artist who YOU are supporting directly, that's not acceptable.

Art and stories are valuable, that's people's time and labor, it just comes down to folks who don't care about artists and their labor and that bums me out. What a punch in the gut. To see the notification and then get this instead. I just instantly started crying. I can’t even imagine how this must feel and I’m just one of many who loves dearly the daily dose of joy they get from your pages. This is the problem with a social media system that rewards engagement. I think TikTok is the worst offender. Honestly if TikTok goes I won’t be sad. As a leader of an LGBTQ anti-violence organization, your work promotes LGBTQIA+ joy and life so well, and sensitively handles violence and harm. This work is so very valuable to our communities, and you need all the love and support, not this "gleeful theft." I’m really sorry this is happening to you. This Patreon has been such a special place, and honestly even seemed too good to be true when I discovered it. I don’t think I’ve ever followed any creator of your scale and talent who’s been so community-focused, kind, and gives so much to fans. You’re so open about your process and your thoughts, and it’s upsetting to see people who don’t value that. And particularly people who don’t respect the boundaries and requests you’ve made. You don’t ask for much! I think the volume of comments here saying the same thing pretty much speaks for itself: we’ll support you whatever you decide. We love the daily pages, but we’ll be fine without them if that’s what you need to do. There is a lot of love here, and we’d be happy to channel it toward supporting you in whatever way you need.

Your daily pages are the highlight of each day for me and I'm heartbroken and furious that people have violated your trust in this way. Patreon really should have the same function as netflix and other platforms where you cannot screenshot or screen record. I know it wouldn’t solve the whole issue but I think It’d definitely minimise it. I’m so sorry Alice, you deserve so much better, people are sickening.

Can our Patreon membership with you be updated to include an electronically signed agreement that states the legal consequences of sharing any content? It’s such a shame that this is needed but could help deter any future shares?

Heartstopper changed my life, it unlocked something inside my heart that refuses to be put back in its box. I refuse to let any young person go through what I went through, so my office (I work in a school) is now always open to anyone who needs to talk and is clearly labeled as a safe space (I'm trying to role-model Mr. Ajayi as best as I can!) I just wanted to let you know that we all are tremendously appreciative of your work and how you handle delicate situations in the Heartstopper story with such grace and aplomb. I live for new pages because your story helps me to be a stronger, better person. The fact that people are abusing that privilege makes me fear for my own mental safety. We're here for you to help however we can!

The special thing about Alice is that they haven't allowed Heartstopper to be 'franchised' and sold out to big companies with big scary lawyers. Unfortunately that means as one person putting their heart and soul on paper they have the burden of all this crap on their shoulders. I cannot begin to imagine how upsetting it is to have your work stolen after spending so many hours perfecting it. We are so lucky to have an update every day and an author that reads our comments and actively responds, it's so special! In grade school, my first grade class of 28 kids was shared with a kid we’ll call Lorenzo. Despite weeks and months of warnings about his behaviors…not listening to the teacher, talking back to her, to other students, bullying, physical fighting, generally distracting everyone…he refused to listen. She began threatening him with a type of social pressure which meant the whole class losing a recess or lunch break playground time sitting in the dark with their heads down on their desks. Ultimately, this is what happened. What I learned from Lorenzo about humanity was this; rules (laws for adults) are made for those that will break them and refuse to conform to basic community standards necessary for a functioning society. He was a one boy anarchist. It only takes few bad seeds to make a larger population miserable or unhappy. This situation, in a simple word, sucks. If you stop posting on Patreon, 99.9% of us will patiently wait for your art to be published so please don’t let it rob you of your joy in creating it. We are not going anywhere. ♥️❤️‍🩹

I don’t think everyone appreciates just how generous and vulnerable you’re being sharing your art in real time and engaging with our reactions before it’s ready for public consumption - and just how violating it feels when people disrespect the very clear boundaries you’ve set. I’m glad you have your publisher’s support in addressing these incidents (I see that the TikTok account people flagged yesterday is gone), and I see a few commenters have shared some suggestions re: updating the watermark and perhaps considering file hosting sites that disallow or track screenshots/downloads, which maybe could help? But ultimately I just hope you can do what’s best for you, your creative process, and your well-being, which is paramount. As so many others have said, we’ll of course keep supporting you and Heartstopper no matter what you decide! 💕

I was so upset for you that this happened Alice, especially as you made it perfectly clear with every post that you didn’t want them shared. I agree with who said to change the watermark to include your name and to report them if found anywhere but here on Patreon.

This happens to be part of my line of work. There is no way to stop this sort of theft, it is controlled at best. Artists with vast resources are still powerless to stop it entirely. They are often better off leaving this Sisyphean task to their agents or publishers, otherwise it just creates endless stress or angst.

Finding heart stopper is what got me to download tapas years ago and led me to a whole host of lovely queer webcomics. I really hope that the measures being taken work and allow you to rebuild confidence that you can share things here safely but i totally understand if it doesn't feel possible. Thanks so much for all you've shared over the years, it's been so touching to watch these characters navigate difficult things and build community with each other, and to see versions of these characters reach a larger audience through the Netflix show. I don't understand how anyone who likes your work and pays attention to it's themes could do shit like this.

Unfortunately, once a creator gets to a certain level of popularity, there will always be people who don’t have emotional ties to the community of followers and will only think of receiving advance content as a system to be gamed. The only way to get around that is to change the system. If having advance feedback is critical to your creative process, even though it would be sad, it might be best if you limited your Patreon followers to people who signed up before the show became a phenomenon. Which means I wouldn’t be here anymore, but your state of mind is much more important that my being here. Whether you want to continue the webcomic is a different issue entirely. No matter what, any content you release publicly will be now be disseminated more widely than ever, and I don’t know enough about your thinking about that to say anything one way or another. Either way, I hope you take comfort in the fact that you’ve created a millions-strong community that take comfort in everything you do.

Okay, I think I have never written here - one of those silent patreons who just been following via email updates and been having the comic while active as the daily highlight to cheer myself up. With that said, I feel you and respect whichever decision you end up doing. But do really hope thou this will continue. Just a pity the whole situation, people in general suck as usual....

Alice, I obviously cannot say I was as devastated as you when I came across that TikTok account yesterday before going to bed (because you are the creator and I am just a fan), but I surely felt SICK. I was on the verge of a depressive episode and I think seeing people could be so cruel and could call themselves 'fans' while completely disrespecting you and your work was just what I needed to sink completely lol. People just fucking disgust me. You don't deserve this. Heartstopper doesn't deserve this. I felt so helpless, my first intention was to report them for copyright infringement but I saw one had to be either the creator (you) or someone on the creator's team to do that, so I just reported them for harmful content and blocked them, hoping that would help. I hope that the person or people who choose such behavior will be hit by karma just the way they deserve (they probably won't, but let me dream anyway). I love Heartstopper and my respect and admiration for you is infinite and always will be. Take care Alice. I hope it all gets better, I really do ❤️

Have you thought about changing your pricing at all? You could change the tier for daily pages to something a bit more expensive to try and stave off some of these people? Just a suggestion!! I know I don’t mind paying more for this amazing webcomic, and I’m sure others would be just as understanding given all the assholes trying to ruin things for the rest of us. Stay strong, Alice!! You are so creative and innovative and AMAZING at storytelling!! So many teenagers are going to read/watch Heartstopper and have what many of us older LGBTQ+ folks never got. I’m usually all for piracy but in a case like this it seems really immoral to go against an artist’s wishes like this. Especially when all of the other pages of the comic are available for free with new ones being released. And like you said your only one person working on this story so it’s not like these people are stealing from some big company. They are just stealing content from an artist that they love. Hi Alice, I wonder if there are any practical ways we as your patreons can help brainstorm the situation. I totally understand that we act as a sort of loving focus group for your work and I think that's very important to you as a creator (it's a bonus that we get to see early content). I'd hate for you to lose this because as you say it can be a very lonely situation and being able to share in a safe community is so important. The best thing I've come up with so far is maybe raising the patreon price and/or somehow password safing the content but I know this is very difficult. Unfortunately it just takes one a*hole to screenshot and send to a friend. I will keep thinking about it and if you come up with any ideas your side I'm sure we'd be all ears to listen xxx

I’m so angry for you Alice. You work so hard, your stories bring so much joy (not just Heartstopper, your other works too. I have recommended Loveless alone to about 5 people) and you don’t deserve a second of this. For what it’s worth, your Patreon is priced incredibly fairly. I get much less content on some of my others that I’m paying over double the amount for. One has 3x monthly updates for £11 a month. Not daily. I understand not having a lot of spare money, I’ve been on benefits and not able to afford rent - never mind food or bills. But that doesn’t make what these people are doing okay. You pay for your media - or you wait until it’s free. You release it for free literally a few weeks later - and that is something you don’t have to do - you would be well within your rights to keep to print/ebook versions only. It’s your intellectual property and you can do with it as you wish. I love your updates, they bring me so much joy. But you need to protect yourself and your intellectual property. Whatever you do, I fully support you. You go above and beyond on Patreon. As much as I love interacting with people and getting excited over small details - and I love seeing what you react to - it’s something that I can’t believe you do. I wish I could do more than just a supportive comment, and if I can - great! - but please do know that whatever your decision is you will have my full support. I hope you’re looking after yourself. Sorry to hear this, Alice, and speaking as someone else who works for themselves and knows the level of passion that goes into that and then every little attack on your work feels so amplified, and like a personal attack - I think sometimes it's good to try and separate that this is not personal, but some people being greedy and thoughtless (albeit as frustrating as that still is, I'm not making excuses for it at all!). There may be a couple of bad eggs among your patrons and perhaps worth looking to see if the accounts sharing your work without permission have the same account name in their email address (it's easy to be careless, not every thief is smart...) may be a way to ban them or send a message to cease and desist. It's a shame that it's making you reconsider the Patreon work, as I expect many here would echo that subscribing to Patreon is a way that fans of your work want to provide encouragement and a thank you / reward for those efforts as well as hopefully helping put food on the table and all that other stuff. But do take comfort that 99% of your Patreon subs will be here because they appreciate your work and want to see you able to continue :)

Je trouve dommage que vous en veniez à envisager d’arrêter la BD surtout pour ces quelques personnes non respectueux (que j’espère être une minorité) en sachant tout ce que heartstopper apporte aux gens, pour ma part elle a permit à de nombreuses personnes qui n’osez pas avouer leur homosexualité ou était victime de harcèlement de faire comprendre ce que cela pouvait envisager. Et de ma situation personnel je me retrouve dans Nick et Charlie. Je serai très triste si vous renonciez à ça.
