HEARTSTOPPER is getting published!

Hello gang! I'm sure many of you have seen this news on my other social media, but I thought I should post here too so nobody misses it. HEARTSTOPPER VOLUME ONE and VOLUME TWO are being published by Hachette Children's in 2019!!

So what was the point of the Kickstarter if this was going to happen? 

Early this year, Hachette approached my agent and I with a proposal - they’re really loving Heartstopper and would love me to write/draw a NEW graphic novel for them, something unrelated to Heartstopper. I was like, HELL YES, but I’m a lil busy right now with the Kickstarter and book 4, maybe in like 6-12 months time? And Hachette were like, sure!

Fast-forward to the Kickstarter, which did 600% better than I expected. There was a lot of excitement after we hit the goal rather quickly!! So a couple of weeks after we met that goal, Hachette got in touch again and were like, hey, so, we’d rather like to offer for Heartstopper instead? And I was like, YES.

Why did I say yes? Well. The Kickstarter self-published edition was always going to be a finite number of books. Self-publishing when you are both the creator and distributor is a maddening amount of work - I will not be able to keep re-ordering books and posting parcels for years and years as well as doing all the other things I do! Eventually, the book would have gone out of stock, and that would be it. No more. The end.

But if it’s published by a publisher… I don’t have to worry about that so much! After the Kickstarter orders have been sent and remaining Kickstarter copies have been sold/donated, I can go back to what I actually think I’m good at, which is creating stuff! And everyone who wants a copy of HEARTSTOPPER: VOL ONE will still be able to get one!

TLDR: This all happened AFTER the Kickstarter, and it’s good because now everyone who wants one will be able to get a copy of the book, even if my self-published copies sell out!

Will Hachette’s Volume 1 be the same as your Kickstarter self-published Volume 1?

Almost exactly the same! The only slight differences are the cover, which has some very minor changes, and the Hachette edition will not have french folds (cover flaps). Everything inside the book (apart from the obvious things like the copyright information) will be exactly the same.

When are they being released?

February 2019 - Heartstopper: Volume 1

July 2019 - Heartstopper: Volume 2

Are they coming out in any other countries/languages?

Hopefully! But it’s too early to know yet. No foreign rights deals have been made yet, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Is Heartstopper going to be taken down from the internet? :(

NO!!!!! That was my first condition that I told my agent when we decided to query publishers. It will never be taken down from the internet.

So… wait… is HEARTSTOPPER book 4?

NOPE! I’m still working on a prose novel which will be published by HarperCollins. But this is hopefully something to fill the gap :)
