So which one is actually the better one to get? It's very confusing as to which is the new one and which is just an updated version of the previous version.

The better is the patreon version a.k.a. version 1.8.0. Version 1.7.1 is just an update of our exclusive version 1.7.0, but for the public. We are 1 month of content ahead of the public.
