I studied in Minot State University in North Dakota. For my first semester I was in the dorms and had to eat in cafeteria. They would have baked chicken with not even salt on it. And it was not just college. Local students when they took me to their homes would have similarly bland food. So yes Upper Midwest is known for bland spiceless food.
