856 - Bear Market feat. Jeff Stein (8/5/24)

The Washington Post’s Jeff Stein stops by to discuss his extensive new piece investigating the ever-ballooning U.S. international sanctions regime. Despite Biden recently bragging he’s leaving office with the U.S. not involved in any foreign conflicts, the U.S. now has sanctions in place in over a third of all nations around the world, including more than 60% of “developing” nations. Jeff walks us through this increasingly central policy of worldwide economic coercion, how it shapes American imperial aims, and some intended & unintended consequences of the exponential expansion of sanctions in the 21st century. Then, we take a quick look at the state of the Veepstakes, Josh Shapiro’s whole deal, and of course, RFK Jr. and the road-kill bear.

Check out Jeff’s sanctions investigation here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/interactive/2024/us-sanction-countries-work/

I feel bad about ragging on the Chapo guys about this shitty guest… I guess I just don’t understand the near total blackout on popular left media (Chapo / Trueanon) of journos from Grayzone. Sanctions would have been much better explored by a guest who opposes them for the right reasons and is equally or greater informed.

The comment "Elder Ring" and "Land of Shadow is a realm of resistance" solidifies this episode as a certified Bad Guest Episode. Also I'm sorry but the "decline of US in hot wars" isn't a "important trend that deserves some recognition" but just an outright lie when we maintain troops in Iraq and bomb Yemen. We just don't call those wars anymore after the Rumsfield-ification of the military.

C

M
MEAT CLOWN · August 8, 2024

I think it's mostly because making fun of Trump is seen as low hanging fruit or well-trodden ground or whatever so they leaned hard into making fun of Dems instead. Which is mildly annoying but it also makes the trump mocking episodes funnier to me since they don't do it all the time

Will’s unconscious desire to have shapiro as vp in the ep is so embarrassing I reckon it’ll be the last we hear of it.

J
Jerry Cornelius · August 7, 2024

Come on. Being wrong about something that was likely to happen is not embarrassing. Shapiro had a 25% chance of being selected because he was one of four serious contenders. And having just watched our entire Congress bend over and present their asses to Netanyahu like a flange of baboons, anticipating Shapiro as VP was perfectly reasonable.

The funniest part is that the sanctions work less the more you use them. The US probably pushed itself over the tipping point when they tried to “ruin” the Russian economy with sanctions. Captagon was once a legitimate pharmaceutical, first made by what was then (in the 60s) Degussa pharma gruppe. It contained fenethylline, a prodrug of amphetamine and theophylline (a xanthine similar to caffeine). But Illicit captagon typically doesn’t have actual fenethylline, just contains amphetamine and sometimes caffeine, though they seem to still often use counterfeit pill punches modeled after the legitimate pharmaceutical imprints. Ya Ba in SE Asia is a similar situation, except obviously yaba contains methamphetamine instead of amphetamine and was never a licit Rx product

I hate when people throw around the "people aren't always rational actors" line, because 9-times-out-of-10 it's usually just the person imposing their sense of what's rational on some other person without actually trying to understand how things look from their vantage point. Like "why would I undermine my political position and put myself myself back into economic subservience to these people who are likely to just reneg on their part of the bargain anyways? Better to just tough it out with these other countries till we work out an alternative" is quite a rational position for a lot of countries.
