844 - Journey to the End of the Night feat. Kavitha Chekuru & Sharif Abdel Kouddous (6/24/24)

We’re joined by journalist Sharif Abdel Kouddous and filmmaker Kavitha Chekuru to discuss their new film The Night Won’t End: Biden’s War on Gaza. The film examines the lives of three families as they try to survive the continued assault on Gaza. Will and Felix discuss the film, the civilian toll of the war, the U.S. state departments continued obfuscation around civilian casualties, and the complete breakdown of international human rights law around the war.

The film is available in its entirety on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECFpW5zoFXA&ab_channel=AlJazeeraEnglish

America herded people into bombing zones and killed them in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Left them alone the entire war, then nuked them.

eSIMs for Gaza is this great org that will take donated eSIMs (like you’d get when you travel to another country and want data on your phone) and get them to people in Gaza. The first time I did it, it took forever to get activated, or they’d get used very slowly. More recently, I have someone who goes through 10 GB like every 3 days. They could be hot spotting for other phones, but I was wondering if they were uploading a bunch of video. Pretty sure there’s no way to find out. They stopped using it for two weeks and I thought they might’ve gotten bombed, but then it started back up. Find how to donate at gazaesims.com

One thing I’m wondering is what is Hamas’ military capability at this point? Is there a force challenging israel in Gaza at this point?

C
Comrade Trash Panda · June 25, 2024

None, Hamas has already been effectively destroyed. This is purely about the killing at this point, I mean it always was but the excuse is long dead just like all the hostages.

M
Mark Schneider · June 25, 2024

This is dark & horrible stuff. We all need to hear & witness it, however. The US gubbmint along with Izrael will go down as some of the worst war criminals in all of known human history. And pieces of shit like the corpse-eating, dead-eyed ghoul Blinken, Matt Miller & "Admiral" Kirby are proud of that.

C
Comrade Trash Panda · June 25, 2024

Gonna need a revolution first before that history can be written

T
The Children of Jack Acid · June 25, 2024

The IDF soldiers posting their war crimes to Tik Tok has a sort of precedent in the U.S.: in the early 20th century, people in a small town that just had a lynching would take photos of the lifeless victim hanging from a tree (with a smiling crowd usually around him), and then vendors would make POSTCARDS of those photos, and people would mail them to friends, like it was a vacation postcard. You know... "Having a blast! Wish you were here!" Obviously this was not a "war crime" but it was an out-in-the-open violation of both Federal and, usually, local law, but no one was worried about being caught or arrested, because the South got to lynch with impunity. Northern Democrats needed those votes.

E
Elliot Matheny · June 26, 2024

Might as well have been a war crime. Jim Crow America was certainly prosecuting a war.

E
Emily Laird · June 25, 2024

Jesus fucking christ. The account of Hind’s call is just harrowing, infuriating, tear-inducing. No words. Thank you for drawing attention to this doc.

J
Jose Mendoza · June 26, 2024

I was literally in traffic with both of my hands covering my mouth and couldn’t stop the tears when her mother told her not to worry about her dress. Fucking heartbreaking on a human level but if you have kids, it hits just a little different.

T
TLT · June 25, 2024

Thank you to Sharif and Kavitha for the difficulty and sincerity of their task. Hind’s story and it’s transcription alone was too much to bear. I couldn’t hold back a scream and tears. How can people do this to each other, how can people endure this? The scale of horror is debilitating and incomprehensible.

M
MEAT CLOWN · June 25, 2024

This was a good episode and I hated every minute of it 🙏

J
John Harwood · June 25, 2024

I love when the Chapos are goofy—they are so funny—but the episodes I actually relisten to are the ones when they are able to channel, themselves or through guests, the absolute moral outrage that is this world. It helps me to feel less alone.

J
Jessica Rios · June 26, 2024

That’s why Matt is the best. He can do both. Be funny while also being outraged and dead serious. God I miss our boy during these times.

Not to be a nerd but I can't think of anything else to say so Will asked if it's possible for US military to be serving in the IDF. It's possible, but unlikely for someone in active duty unless they're assigned in a direct capacity. To go there on their own they'd need to get approved for leave, and this would be an especially unusual exemption. Reservists and guardsmen could do it on their own time but they'd also probably need authorization. As for special forces or CIA, impossible to know for sure. I've seen pictures of soldiers with US flags but that's not really conclusive. I don't think the extent of US involvement in Gaza will be known for some time, if ever.

W
Woodrow Skillson · June 25, 2024

It's more that it could be us active duty outright participating

E
Emily Richardson · June 25, 2024

1. Oof. This was a hard one but so glad you covered it 2. I am always so thankful (? can’t find the right word) for the disgust and frustration in Will’s voice when he talks about what’s happening in Gaza. I think it represents my feelings well and I’m glad it’s being put out in the world. 3. Man, the conversation about the kids being shot and blown up. This genocide is so fucking pointless and whenever I stop and really think about it it makes me feel like I’m actually going insane. 4. Great episode. I always crave the funny ones but appreciate when you do these hard ones.

On the most important issue of 2024 Biden and Trump are the exact same. If Trump was president though maybe a lot of the lib non Zionist morons would be pro ceasefire. Israel would prefer Trump and the republicans and biden and the limp dick dems still bend over for Israel. Shows you who really runs this country. If you vote for either major party in 2024 you’re part of the problem.

D

Thank fucking God for DemocracyNow! The single solitary news media source in the West worth a damn has been proving it's worth every single day of this conflict. C
Comrade Trash Panda · June 25, 2024

It should be a rallying cry to stop the endless reaction to particular crises and instead redirect that energy and outrage into the formation of a non-electoral political party aimed at overcoming the present system. There will and have been thousands of Gazas at this point. Reacting to each and everyone as if they aren't connected is draining the political will to do the necessary thing to end this cycle once and for all. I have yet to see even an inch taken in this direction. I'm afraid we are doomed to be passive witnesses to the continued cycle of atrocity.

b

Great episode. It’s stories like this that make, even an atheist like me, wish there was a god (if for no other reason than the expectation that Biden, Blinken, Miller, Kirby, Sullivan, McGurk, Austin, Netanyahu, Haggari, Gallant, Ben Gvir, Smotrich- and every hack journalist, soldier, intelligence official and bureaucrat who conducts this genocide- will rot in hell.) Who would’ve guessed that a media outlet sponsored by a Gulf Monarchy would put our supposedly “free press” to shame? Great interview and I send thanks to the journalists of Al Jazeera for keeping this slaughter in the headlines. Free Palestine. Fuck Israel. Fuck the IDF. Fuck Biden.

E
