A Less Than Genius Murder Plot - Gulfport, Mississippi
This week, in Gulfport, Mississippi, it's a race to find a woman, who was snatched from her home, before it's too late! All while her husband takes ransom calls, and the police set up roadblocks. But will any of it matter? Or, will this seemingly bloodthirsty kidnapper jump right to murder, if he gets impatient? In the end, a brutal murder takes place. And the killer is complete riddle, with his claimed genius IQ, wild past, and what he was actually trying to accomplish with this murder!!
Along the way, we find out that Gulfport should lean into the mud, that just giving a banking executive's name out is apparently a dangerous thing, and that it's hard to claim a murder went a certain way, when the forensics tell a totally different story!!

Double thumbed it.
The trial took place in the town of the Mississippi Squirrel Revival
Me playing cribbage online while listening to this episode. 😂😂
My son went to Arcadia HS, Jimmie described the area perfectly.
Small Town Murder/Crime in Sports has given me so many wonderful usernames over the years. Methfalcon, FreakoFark, and now CaseyAnthonysHallway.
When Jordan gets a red jumpsuit, all I can picture is Rerun from What's Happening! James said everything is French at that time (impassé 😂 💀) and Rerun wore what I thought was a beret. Hey, hey, hey! Ya gotta be over 50 for that reference.
We need a shirt that says "it's the Casey Anthony hallway" I have been saying it since I heard it from you guys ..
Na Na Sha is ridiculously clever.
My grandfather was the president of our local bank in the ‘70’s and a man cased my grandparents house, so they knew when my grandfather would be away and all their children. My grandmother was in her kitchen when a man walked in the door and told her he was kidnapping her. She sat at the kitchen table and said “I’m not going anywhere”. Obviously this man wasn’t professional and he was confused and again said “I am here to kidnap you, we know your husband is president of the bank”. Again she said “No and you will have to drag me out of this house kicking and screaming”. He panicked, ran, my grandmother locked the door, got her gun and called the police. She was the coolest grandma and I adored her.
Needless to say it was a whole thing with the FBI. I was too young to remember, but I’ve read the court docs and listened to the family lore
1:59:00 "He's an ASShole!" Similar cadence and tone as Airplane! While he's reading the radar screen
They in fact did not shut up, but I was given murder
jimmys gasp when James said the guy was busted for check fraud 😂
Ill argue the reason why they dont say where they get the meds is much like why some doctors at women's clinics go under pseudonyms so people dont picket their offices. Now I would suggest he bring the lawyer to the wardens office to show the paperwork and have the lawyer sign shit so he doesn't leak it
J & J talking about phone books about 50 mins in made me genuinely so sad. I think things were better before cell phones and I think phone books and proper caller ID is one of the biggest loses of the modern world. It has contributed to various forms of inequality, more individualistic attitudes, and less collective societal infrastructure. Things have degraded so much so fast and it makes me feel padded-cell insane that everyone is so okay with the degradation of societal stability and infrastructure. It's fucked up!
Good episode, but this should've been the express episode and last week should've been the full episode 😭💔
Wow! That’s one heck of a rollercoaster ride!!
Two things: 1. Vince Vance and the Valiants ROCK! Their version of 'All I Want for Christmas' is way better than Mariah Carey's version. And Vince put the BEE in behive! Check out his do! 2. The small town I lived in used to take the phone book and randomly pick their jurors from it. Just open it up and point at a name. Imagine my surprise when, right after getting my own phone line at the tender age of 12, I was called for jury duty. My dad had to take me down to the courthouse to prove I was too young to be a juror. (And yes, I was a spoiled princess as a child!)
I sent an email to Patreon. I paid for a year, so it apparently I don’t get the back episodes because it ends up 4$and 98 cents?
Honestly, idc if the death penalty is a deterrent. I care about the victims family and what brings them peace. I don’t think people are “wrong” for not agreeing with the death penalty. I think they have a different perspective and that’s okay. I do however, have a problem with people who act like people who agree with the death penalty, are wrong. Even when the victims family members say “we don’t agree with the death penalty”. I’ve heard James say “that’s the correct opinion to have”. Or “that’s the right viewpoint”. I’m not going to pretend I have any idea how it feels to lose a family member. I’m not going to judge victims families, either way, with their own opinion on the death penalty. Love you guys. But sometimes, I think you let your own opinions on this topic, come off rather callous to the victims family. I’m not going to say any opinion is right. I’m just going to say, I can understand why they may feel either way about it and that’s okay. I also find it interesting that certain people pick and choose what is the “correct” topic to “judge” and have the “correct views” on. Also, I don’t think it’s crazy to hide your identity. We KNOW people are crazy and them and their family WILL be sent their own death threats. You do it because sadly, people are zealous about abolishing the death penalty to the point of violence. I don’t this is a crazy step for people to hide their identity. Just my opinion though.
I worked for a criminal defense attorney and we had a client that was convicted of murder. The victim was a family man with grown children, a grandfather, a retired veteran, a pillar of the community, an absolute saint. The DA was pushing for the death penalty (he would have gotten it, too!), but the family said no. They just didn't believe in it. All they wanted was our client to redeem himself and live a life of purpose. Even though the rest of his life was going to be behind bars, they felt that there was good in him and he could be saved. I'm retired now, but I can honestly say I have never encountered the grace and forgiveness that this family showed our client. They prayed for him and told him that when his time comes, he can go to heaven and meet their dad/his victim because he was such a great guy. I've never witnessed anything like it. Absolutely restored my faith in humanity.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but the state probably did him a favor putting him to death at 88. Anyone who has had to watch an elderly loved one suffer through days, weeks, and months of dying of natural causes knows it’s an awful thing to witness. There’s a reason so many people think the perfect death is going to sleep in old age and simply never waking up. Stupid waste of taxpayer money as usual, though, when life without would have been fine if it weren’t for ticky tack legal fine print.
Re: Casey Anthony's Hallway - I would like to submit an additional descriptor: George Castanza's beach house in the Hamptons. He lies to his former fiance's parents that he has rented a beach house in the Hamptons, going so far as to get in the car to drive them to this fictional beach house.
The WHOLE point of monkeyDoo's
Which episode is this on YSO?
Omg I died at the "maybe there's more adoption than we're aware of comment". I literally just found out I have an older sibling that my parents gave up for adoption
Cruising’ the Coast is soooo much fun!!!
My dad's family are big card players. My Nana was a fucking SHARK! She'd wipe the floor with whoever she was playing! Didn't matter who you were! 😂😂
Cool
Jimmy, Ed was Edwina in Raising Arizona. You are correct, sir.
Genius my ass
TG&Y- Toys, Games and Yo-yos
It was Edwina!!
Love after Lockup and a Gulf Coast episode?? Yaaaaaaaaaaay
Fun fact; Mississippi ranks 16th in education, Arizona is 46th and NY has us beat at #1 though. Fun episode hearing a town close to me.
We haven’t had a crazy ending like that in a while.
Vince Vance and the Valiants sang the original All I Want For Christmas is You before Mariah Carey It's my favorite Christmas song
I'm cracking up my mom totally took me to see Beverly Hills cop for my 6th birthday.🤣
TG&Y!! Holy shit I haven't heard that in 40 years. Loved me some TG&Y--next to the Montgomery Ward.
I just wanna say that George Costanza's house in the Hamptons was the original hallway lol
I pisses me off when the killer is sentenced to death and then tries everything to stop from being executed. Your victims wanted to live. The death penalty does not work. Let them go to prison and let Gen pop get them. Daumer style.
Did Jimmie just use the word Bozo?
J&J, great episode!! But wait! There’s more! Look into the murder of Judge Vincent Sherry and his wife Margaret. The true crime account, Mississippi Mud, details the story. It is CLASSIC STM fodder.
This murder also took place in Gulfport. Forgot to mention that!
Im walking around shopping listening and I saw a book called "Edwina" haha took a pic but cant post.. its a kids book - Edwina the dinosaur who didnt know she was extinct. By mo willems
I think heard that the prosecutor and victim attended St. James Catholic Church. We went to that church, as well as St. John’s! I remember the name Joe Sam Owen. It’s hard to forget.
I’m from Michigan and my very first job was at TG&Y.
Was just looking at maps in this area because of the Noah Wells thing
I love "Casey Anthony's hallway"! I've been using it tons since you said it in the bonus ep.
You didn’t have to own a yacht to be a member of Gulfport Yacht Club. We were members from the 60s on and never owned anything larger than a skiff, which we kept at home.
I lived on 53rd Street Circle in Gulfport, 64-73. Graduated from Gulfport East High School. Go Vikings! Yea Rah Fuck!!!
That movie, Raising Arizona, is a classic!
I grew up in Gulfport; moved there in 1964, age 9, just after the civil rights workers disappeared. Notwithstanding the disgraceful racism, I did grow up hunting, fishing, boating, skiing, sailing, etc. A very colorful place to grow up.
Got my shoutout and he mostly got my last name right lol
I grew up in Long Beach next to Gulfport and it’s still not completely back from Katrina. The conversation with the paving companies probably did go like that 😂
You guys...a fertilizer plant doesn't just take in animal shit and turn it into fertilizer lol if farmers could SELL their animal waste consistently to a company that would be WILD. lol organic fertilizer companies, sure. But the big money is in ammonia, phosphate, nitrogen, potassium. Its a scientific process turning ore and gas into a usable fertilizer product. The bill for just our fertilizer each year is enough to buy a house 😂
(I say this with love lol no rude tone even though it can come off that way)
My uncle was 19 when he signed up for Vietnam (in 68) his medal of Valor letter said he disregarded command; crossed an open rice paddy laying down precise cover fire for his comrades to make it across the field and continued to do so until mortality wounded. He was 19. HE KNEW he wasn't coming home.
Lmao IIo Un
I once lived in Gulfport, MS It was an arm pit of the US.
Pretty good description. Where / when did you live there? I lived there from 1964 to 1973, attended college in Jackson MS, then moved to Washington DC and never lived in Mississippi again. But I traveled there occasionally to visit my mother in Gulfport and brother near Jackson. Yeah, armpit is a pretty good description, apart from the barrier islands. Did a lot of camping and fishing on Horn Island.
I was adopted but not by a rich family and boy did I think I was the only poor adopted kid haha every movie and tv show has a mega ritch family adopting kids
All this resentencing is starting to sound like the opening of Bob’s Burgers
Her name is Edwina in Raising Arizona. She tells him when she’s taking his picture. 😂
Y’all made my day with this episode! All this is in my backyard. I spent my summers in Gulfport, my brother-in-law went to East Jeff HS AND James pronounced Metairie CORRECTLY! Wahoo 🥳🎉👍
My dad lived in Gulfport for a while. He was there during Katrina. Basically everything between the Gulf and the railroad tracks got erased by the storm. The other thing I remember is that he lived on a road with a father and his three adult children (different houses). The oldest was a crabber, he didn't pay his power bill but didn't really care because he was drunk and/or asleep when he'd need lights in his house. He'd throw his Budweiser cans on the gravel road in front of his house. His siblings would crush them in their various comings and goings. When he got enough cans to turn in he'd pick up his Budweiser driveway and start over. That dude was great, I understood at least half of what he said.
Wasn’t the Great American Five and Dime where Bryan Adams bought his first real six string in the summer of 69
Eclectic with the Cs replaced with Ks? Generally when there are more than two Ks its going to be a problem
In the late 1970s (yes that’s how old I am) I had to have my phone number unlisted and the phone company did it for free because I had a weird guy calling me and say strange things on the phone so I guess it was probably a stalker so yes, they did actually make phone books for everybody’s phone number was in there
I remember having one's number unlisted creating an aura of mysterious caution 😎
I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, raised my family on the bayou. I diss Mississippi with brutal honesty, but I also love it...it's very schizo. The peopls are the most generous I've ever met-i think because most of us here have gone through some really hard times. We had 32 feet of surge in Katrina, 12 miles inland. Then BP Disaster. Shit, guess we are nuts or 'plum dumb' lol. Have fun, guys! I'm gonna laugh at myself tonight! Y'all c'mon back and we'll have a crawfish boil!!
My mother had 3 1/2 feet of flood water and 4 giant pine trees on the roof. Practically cut the house in half.
Great episode--can't believe I've never heard of this man!
can’t wait for LAL ❤️🔥
I hope James and Sarah are safe (and dry!) with all this crazy flooding in the Hudson Valley.
I may get a bit too excited when new episodes appear.
Makes my night!
