Pattern and Instructions: The Étoile Petal Top (with wrap and bustle)
This month's collaboration with Gunnar has been so much fun, and I was so creatively inspired that I couldn't stop playing with the Étoile pattern!
So this month's Glamour Circle+ pattern is the Étoile Petal Top, a version of the Étoile Bodice with a Basque waist and optional petals that was heavily inspired by the work of Charles James.
The pattern also includes a detachable tulle shoulder wrap and there are additional instructions for a detachable tulle bustle (or butt cape, as some like to call it!). The shoulder wrap is designed for the neckline of the Étoile Bodice, but you can use the bustle with nearly any skirt pattern you desire.
You'll need the pattern pieces and instructions from the Étoile Bodice pattern to complete this top: https://www.patreon.com/posts/156894243
IMPORTANT: You'll find the tiled file (for printing at home on A4 or letter size sheets and taping together) and the A0 file (for printing at a copy shop like ThePlottedPattern.com). Please note that we have two size blocks, so make sure to download the correct files for the size you're making. If you have any questions about which size to sew, don't forget to read our blog post with all the details!
Don't forget to share your makes with the hashtags #etoilebodice and #charmpatterns!
xoxo,
Gertie
P.S. You can follow the Étoile Bodice video to sew most of the Top. Sewing the petals is not shown on video, but they are not super complicated. (The hardest part is keeping the RS/WS and left side/right side straight, so label carefully and keep them labeled as you construct the top!)

Hi there- are there pieces missing from this pattern?
Looks like we might have gotten the basque instead of the bodice- is that correct?
I just printed this pdf out and it is one A0 page with no bodice pieces is it missing a page?
This pattern is an expansion for the Etoile Bodice. You'll need to print the pieces from the Etoile Bodice pattern to complete it.
Which skirt is the pink dress?
Well…I have started mine too soon so I cannot change it with this petal version…so I will need to to at least another one! 🙄
This is exactly what I needed for my green fairy costume!!! Brilliant!! Thanks Gertie!! 🧚 now go shopping for some green fabric!!!
Can you use the petal bodice with a pencil skirt?
It's a top (separate) so you could wear it with any skirt. I think it would be a great contrast/complement to leather jeans!
That's cute! I have no need for anything that fancy but maybe as a costume....
This is the bomb! What skirt pattern is used here? It looks like a L’amour series.
Yes it is L series bodice and skirt. The Lamour skirt will go with it. I love Dorothy Lamour from her 1940s/1950s films. Gertie must love her too because both the Lamour dress and the Dorothy Bolero are named for her.
Beautiful extras for an already memorable pattern. But can someone confirm my fabric calculations? If I’m doing the bustle, do I need 20+ yards of tulle? The idea sort of breaks my brain. Lol
Oh we are spoiled.
100%!!!
At a risk of being a broken record, BEST GERTIE YEAR EVER!!!
Love this addition 😍😍
Another triumph!!! It's perfect!!!
Is it weird that I want to make the petal top in a tweed or tartan and wear it over white collared shirts, or maybe with a black t-shirt and jeans? Like, would that look cool or would it be totally insane??
I was thinking the same thing 💜
new fantasy level unlocked. this is so pretty. cinderella, that you?
I just used the Landis bodice to make my Cinderella dress but I agree this bodice would be wonderful too!
I absolutely love this!! The petal peplum just makes every other standalone bodice release that much more appealing!
Stunning! ❤️
Those petals with the tulle skirt!! The blue dress is stunning! It's a nice step down from the dramatic pink one, I could see myself wearing that to events and fancy date nights <3 Aahhh my list of things to sew is already too long XD
I'm right there with you
I love this, as basque makes the waist look smaller. If I understand correctly, the pieces forming the basque are an extention of the previous front and back pieces and are treated as one piece. So, where it says 1 and 1, 2 and 2, etc. I cut these as one? Also, how do I modify a skirt to add the basque? Do I sew a circle skirt and sew the baske bodice on top of it, or is there a joining seam?
The basque waist version is only for a separate top, so you'll finish it at the waistline and add a separating zipper. Then you can wear it with any skirt (or pants!). And yes, you'll tape the pattern pieces together before cutting; just follow the Petal Top instructions.
Gertie are u kidding this is so beautiful 😍
Oh my gosh!!!!! I'm in love with this top. I can see it being used in a Fantasy/Fairy outfit as well as a fun retro one!
Imagine it in black silk and tulle for a goth fairy look. !!!
OH MY GOD! 😍
This is stunning!
I love it! I hoped this would be the Charles James petals!
I LOVE this!! 😍
