“Oh? That went just like I read it. My intuition’s not half bad either.”
While I was cutting straight east through the northern forest, wary of encountering monsters, a break in the trees came into view ahead.
Beyond that, there’s the wall surrounding the northern base.
Even though I didn’t check the surroundings from above to figure out my position, it’s perfect!
I was aware myself that being surrounded by convenient abilities like blessed items and divine protections had dulled my own instincts, the crucial ones... but maybe it’s because I’ve been moving through the forest every day recently?
I feel like my senses have been sharpened somehow.
When I headed along the wall toward the north gate, guards were standing in front of it... four of them, more than usual.
Usually it’s one or two... I wonder if something happened?
“Good work—”
“O-oh!? Ooh... Vice-Captain Sera. Good work.”
I gave them a greeting, but... maybe the direction I came from wasn’t the best.
They were quite surprised, but since this is a place I’ve shown up at repeatedly lately, they seemed to realize it was me right away and didn’t point their weapons at me.
They probably know I have business inside, and I could just go in as I am... but before that.
“Did something happen? There are more people outside than usual...”
If something involving monsters had happened, the members still left at the base would be roaming around the area.
At least there was no sign of that... and there’s no sign they were attacked by bandits or anything, so what are they on guard against?
As I tilted my head, one of them checked the road ahead once, confirmed no one was coming, then came over to me and, while glancing toward the base, began to speak in a low voice.
“Actually... since yesterday, merchants trying to make connections with Lord Zighart have started coming. Since it could exceed the number of people this base can support, we’re turning those sorts away here.”
“Those types clearly bring along excessive guards just for stopping by here. You can tell at a glance.”
“Well, but that’s only for today.”
The four of them laughed as they said that.
As Zighart wrote in his message yesterday, staying too long will likely turn into a hassle.
The merchants who were turned away are probably heading straight for the capital, and if I traveled along the highway, there’s a chance I’d catch up to them.
...I plan to head to the capital through the forest, so that was the right call.
“For now, I’ll go on in.”
“Yes. Lord Zighart and the others are in the usual barracks.”
“Okaay.”
I waved to them as I went into the base.

Once I entered the northern base, I first began moving along the wall so as not to stand out.
If I head toward the back of the barracks like this and enter from there, I won’t stand out.
“Even so... there are a lot. From what they said earlier, it sounds like they’re turning quite a few people away at the entrance, but...”
Through gaps between buildings, I could glimpse the streets of the base, and many people were walking around.
Perhaps the people who came from outside are doing business inside the base too; I could hear the voices of buying and selling, and it was really lively.
With this many people coming from outside, turning away merchants who are after Zighart probably isn’t a problem.
If it lasts too long, trouble or an unmanageable situation might occur somewhere, but since it ends today, I’ll have them hang in there a bit longer.
...While Zighart and the others have been staying here, I think this base has gotten a decent amount of profit, but should I set aside some kind of reward or something for later?
Maybe I’ll talk it over with August or someone once I’m back in the capital.
As I moved while gazing at the base from a distance, the barracks where Zighart and the others are staying came into view.
From the back side, it has a different atmosphere than usual, but... it’s the first or second biggest building in this base, so there’s no mistaking it.
I raised the altitude of 【Floating Orb】 and flew to the second-floor window.
