"Now then... how should I go?"
After flying out the room's window, I first landed on the roof of the mansion.
When I'd left for my mission it was still relatively early, but now it's almost noon.
The residents are out of their homes for work, shopping, and such, so I can feel the liveliness from here.
Furthermore, by the West Gate, a line has formed of people waiting to enter the city.
If they're arriving at this hour... they might've been staying in a town one or two stops away.
They should've traveled a fair distance, but they don't seem particularly shaken up either... and it doesn't look like monsters have appeared on the western highway.
"Patrol soldiers are out this morning too, and as long as they're around, things should be okay unless something serious happens."
One of those serious things would be if our movement stirs up the Northern Forest and causes monsters to flee all the way to the highway.
I need to make sure that doesn't happen by seriously scouting while acting as the guide.
"Well... that's another matter. For now, let's head out. The West Gate's fine, right?"
There are too many people around the Merchant Guild at the North Gate, and if I'm leaving the city, it's from the West Gate.
While I'm at it, if I can ask the people there, I'll also hear about the highway conditions.
I leap over the mansion and then head straight through to the west side.
There are people around the gate who've just entered the city, and it seems better to land a little ways away from the gate.
Well... since I usually do that when landing on this side, I already have a good spot in mind.
There's a small storage shed of the Knight Order a little ways inside from the West Gate, and I landed in its shadow.
"Vice-Captain? Thank you for your work!"
"Are you heading out today?"
"Mm..."
Maybe because I often land there, the soldiers guiding the people entering the city in front of the gate quickly noticed and came over.
From the looks of it, the information that I'm heading to the northern base today doesn't seem to have been shared within the Knight Order.
Well... yesterday in Seriana's room, I was told directly by Zighart through Fiora.
If Fiora had spoken with Seriana in the office, Liesel and the others would've been there, so it might've been different... but it doesn't really matter much.
I answer them without worrying about it.
"That's right, I've got a little business. Has anything like a problem occurred on this side?"
"No, at least among those coming here, there's no one who said they were attacked by monsters or bandits."
"Those who arrive near closing time after sunset do say they've spotted monsters in the grasslands and such... but they still haven't been attacked. The patrol squad's subjugation count isn't much different from previous years either... so it looks like the matter in the northern part of the capital hasn't had any effect."
"Hmm... that's very good to hear..."
They haven't gone directly into the Northern Forest or First Forest, but they seem to have a decent grasp of the situation.
The soldiers of the First Squad are truly diligent.
"I'd like to have a quick word with the people lined up outside, if that's okay?"
For now, it does seem certain that no one's been attacked... but I want to know a little more detail so I can pass it along to Zighart and the others.
When I asked the soldier if it was okay for me to go and ask around... he thought, "Let's see..." but immediately nodded.
"Yes. The ones lined up in front of the gate right now are from relatively nearby, so even if you show up, Vice-Captain, it shouldn't cause a commotion."
"But, as expected, if you stay too long it might become hard to keep them under control. So..."
"I know. I'll ask a few people about the highway and then leave right away."
Having said that, I fly toward the gate.
Since I'd been sneaking around in the shadow of the building, the people who entered the city didn't seem to notice me yet, and I managed to reach the gate without being stopped.
But, as expected, when they saw me from the front, those waiting outside began to stir.
I need to finish my business quickly and get out of here.
