“……What’re you two doing?”
Seriana and Elena had come back to the room, and they were making puzzled faces as they watched us taking care of our tools.
If it were just tool maintenance, there are times when I have those two help me, so it isn’t all that strange... but this time, even though it’s maintenance, cleaning is the main part.
The tools we’re using are different from usual too, and if they don’t know the circumstances, they might wonder what we’re doing.
“Oh? Welcome back.”
“Welcome back. Have you already finished your work?”
“Good work. We’re imposing on you.”
Since the work had been cleared away to a good stopping point, I started putting the tools away while speaking to Seriana and the others.
“...You can keep going, you know?”
“No, it’s not like it was urgent work, and I got it to a good stopping point.”
In addition to pouches and belts, I also checked and cleaned tools I hadn’t used recently, like goggles, all at once.
Since all of them are tools I wear, and they’re basically protected by 【Wind’s Garment】 and 【Amber Shield】, they hadn’t been especially damaged, but they’re leather goods, after all.
No matter how much they can avoid outside damage, if you don’t take proper care of them, they’ll wear down.
Since it’s a good opportunity, let’s send them all off to the workshop.
“Even though it was only a little, we used water, so it’s best to turn them inside out and dry them for a while. Take them to your room as they are.”
“Yeah. I’ll do that.”
If it were just drying them, I could do it with magic... but I’m not in a hurry, and air drying is better so the lining doesn’t get damaged.
Still, if I leave them inside out, the leather on the surface could get odd marks, so I have to be careful not to forget.
For now, I gathered up the maintenance tools and headed to put them back in my room.

I put the tools back on the shelf in the room, then placed my gear on the table to dry properly... and cleanup was done.
When I came out of my room, Seriana was beckoning me over, saying, “Come here.”
“What’s wrong?”
While I was putting things away, Fiora had been talking to Seriana and the others about something.
Fiora seemed to have some business with Seriana, and that in itself isn’t particularly strange.
Teresa tried to help me, saying she wasn’t involved, but Fiora stopped her and told her to listen, so maybe it’s something that requires the power of someone higher up.
Well... she didn’t say anything while we were together in the underground research lab, so it probably isn’t anything that serious... but I wonder what it is?
Waiting for me to sit in an empty spot on the sofa, Fiora began to speak.
“After you all came back, a letter from Zighart arrived at the research institute.”
“Oh? He went out of his way? Did their return get delayed or something?”
Zighart’s unit is scheduled to return tomorrow.
They’d already thoroughly investigated and explored the area around the northern base, and the reason they stayed there today was just as a precaution, so that schedule should’ve been pretty much a done deal.
Did something happen to overturn that...? I wondered, feeling a little tense as I looked at Fiora’s face, and maybe she could tell what I was thinking, because Fiora gave a small laugh, “Heh...”
“It’s nothing major. It’s about tomorrow’s return route for Zighart and the others—they’re apparently coming back along the river deep in the forest. During that move, they’d like to avoid fighting monsters if possible, so they want Sera to join them as a scout.”
“Oh?”
According to the original plan, they were supposed to come back to town using the highway.
It wasn’t like we’d made any promise or anything; it’s simply easier to travel, and for those who use the highway, after Zighart and the others pass through, they drive off or hunt the nearby monsters, so it becomes safer to pass.
I think it’s all good things... but they’re changing that?
I wondered what that was about... and prompted her to continue.
