I arrived at the research institute, and while knocking I opened the door and went inside.
“Good work!” I called out toward the inside, and replies immediately came back from around the room.
“Good work, Vice-Captain Sera.”
“Sorry it’s messy. Lady Fiora is in the back.”
Since I’d stopped by the Merchant Guild today, I can’t help comparing, but this place feels much more relaxed than over there.
The staff here are supposed to be close in status to the people who frequent the Merchant Guild, but the way they treat me is closer to the Adventurer Guild folks.
Is it, after all, the length of our acquaintance?
Thinking about that, I greeted them and headed toward the room where Fiora was.
◇
Right now I’m hard at work in the research institute’s workshop.
A little while ago I went to greet Fiora, and at that time she asked me to sort and measure materials and samples here.
It’s simple work—just staring with 【Fairy’s Eye】 and snake eyes to check how much magic remains in them, but...
“Vice-Captain Sera, please handle this one next.”
“Yes, yes.”
“Lady Sera, is this one already finished?”
“It’s done, so you can take it away.”
“Lady Sera...”
“Yes, yes, yes...”
There’s a lot.
I look at the samples in bottles set in cases and place colored tags on them according to how much magic remains... in short, it’s triage.
For other people, it’s work that requires careful examination, but I can tell just by glancing.
It’s easy work, but because we’ve been collecting at all the places we’ve gone to investigate recently, there’s just so much in both quantity and variety.
No matter how much I process, new things keep being brought in one after another.
“About how much of this is there?”
When I asked the staff member who brought the new case, he looked at the corner of the room with an apologetic expression.
There are piles of specially processed boxes for storing magic tools and chemicals, but...
“All of that?”
“This year, Vice-Captain Sera and the others were active even during the rainy season, after all... And because the dismantling site was established, there was also processing coming from there, so we simply didn’t have enough hands...”
“I see...”
In an ordinary year, adventurers and the Knight Order both tend to refrain from outside activities during the rainy season, so the new work coming this way decreases, but... this year, because a unit made up of Knight Order soldiers and adventurers was constantly investigating the northern forest and First Forest during the rainy season, it seems there was actually more than usual.
On top of that, I remember from the squirrel monkey matter—various things were sent from the dismantling site to be examined here.
Especially since Zighart and I, who normally help out during busy times, were out the whole time on that investigation.
With fewer hands and more work... the result of putting off things that didn’t need to be rushed is probably that.
Well... it can’t be helped.
Amid all that, the Merchant Guild was making unreasonable demands... or rather, trying to bring in all sorts of matters, so it’s no wonder Fiora was angry.
The Merchant Guild surely has craftsmen who’ve learned alchemy to some extent, and if they’d done something like dispatch those craftsmen here, I feel like the current mess at the Merchant Guild might not have happened... but that’s too late now.
“Everywhere is short on people, huh.”
This is something I felt keenly in various ways during this rainy season, but as expected, Riana is short on people everywhere.
Perhaps hearing my muttering, another staff member added, “That’s right...”
“However, Lady Fiora is currently using her own connections to gather people. She said she’s getting a good response, so perhaps we might be able to add more staff in the near future.”
“Huh...”
Since it’s Fiora’s connections, they’re probably mages and alchemists from the royal capital area... most of them should be skilled people.
If that comes true, it’ll help Fiora out a lot.
