I’d thought it would just be a matter of heading over to the Merchant Guild and quickly getting things done... but one thing led to another, I ended up making a full circuit around the capital, and it took far longer than I’d expected.
When I returned to the office, both Seriana and Liesel were worried that something like an argument had happened... but once I explained the situation, they let out a deflated "Ahh..."
At the same time, when I told them about the points the Merchant Guild saw as problems in the capital—especially at the North District construction sites and such—Liesel immediately called for a civil official in the room and instructed him to consider countermeasures.
Meanwhile, Seriana sighed and called me over to her.
"They sure used you well, didn’t they?"
"By Branch Manager Klaus? If it’s just something like that, it’s fine, isn’t it?"
What Seriana was saying was probably how he’d used it as an opening to get the female adventurer employed by the Merchant Guild to participate in Teresa’s training, and how he’d encouraged me to inspect the city and tried to have me report the situation at the North District construction site up to the higher-ups.
After all, both are problems the Knight Order could ultimately end up having to handle, and if they can be dealt with before anything happens, I think that’s a good thing.
Well... things like the escort matter might lead to new work for the Merchant Guild, but that much isn’t a problem.
"Really? Up until now they’d never done anything this blatant, so the fact they’ve changed their approach means they really don’t have much leeway."
So it’s about scoring points within the Merchant Guild?
But.
"Hrm... there were adventurers who took part in the survey team too... even so, I wonder?"
Those adventurers should’ve been sent from a different faction than Klaus, but this time they seemed to be cooperating with Klaus.
Even if the higher-ups are at odds, I wonder if the people out in the field just don’t care that much?
"From their standpoint, it’s more work after they retire as adventurers... so they probably want it to take off. They’ll at least cooperate without caring about factions."
Elena, who’d been listening to our conversation, joined in with a wry smile.
"As for adventurers’ lives after retirement, the discussion is still ongoing in Riana, after all. If it can become one solution, that’s a good thing."
Seriana responded to Elena’s words with "That’s true too," but her expression didn’t seem pleased.
"Well... eventually we’ll have the Merchant Guild repay this favor. Sera, if you think of anything, say so too, okay?"
Things I’d want to ask the Merchant Guild... though I couldn’t really think of anything, I still answered with "Okaaay."
◇
After returning to the office, we spent a while just as we were, but since it was just the right time, we went on our lunch break.
Liesel and the others headed to the large dining hall with the civil officials, while we went to the dining hall for small groups.
There, I once again told Seriana and the others about the state of the city.
Seriana does receive reports about the city in the office, and she’s also been getting some information from Elena, but she herself rarely goes out into the city.
And Elena has more information about the city than Seriana, but since she basically only goes out between here and home, it inevitably becomes hearsay, and that information ends up biased.
Well... I don’t know how fair my information is either, but I did see it directly, so I think I can convey it with a fair degree of accuracy.
So, while we were eating, Seriana and the others asked me questions about the city.
There weren’t any particular questions about the North District or South District, but...
"Adventurers have that much sway in the East District, huh?"
Perhaps because she was curious about the East District, Seriana said that in a tone as if she were telling herself.
"That wording might be a little misleading, but well... you’re not wrong. That place is already an adventurers’ town."
