While casually returning the greetings of those gathered, I flew over to the men who didn't fit the atmosphere of this place and lightly called out to them.

"Hey there, you lot. You're not from around here, are you? What brings you here?"

It's nothing more than a greeting with no particular meaning behind it…… but maybe because they had something weighing on their consciences, the men were visibly flustered and all hurriedly left the place together.

The people around who'd been watching that came over in place of the men who'd left.

"……Lady Sera, did those fellows do something?"

"We heard about this place from the Merchant Guild and came to observe……"

Merchant Guild…… so that means most of them are merchants.

Maybe they're worried that those fellows caused some kind of trouble and that they'll all be punished together as a group……

"Hm? No, it's nothing major. Are they acquaintances of yours?"

For now, while denying their worries, I decided to hear what they had to say just in case.

To have them hear the story together, I called over the soldiers who'd accompanied us here.

"Ah…… no need to worry. It's just that since you came along too, I thought I'd let you hear this as well."

After saying that to the merchants who were surprised by the soldiers gathering, I decided to hear what they had to say.

After hearing them out, they were proper merchants who'd come from other countries.

They'd heard about this place from the Merchant Guild and came to observe, apparently.

It seems there are similar facilities in their country's royal capital or the capitals of large territories, and they want to hear opinions comparing the two later on, so in exchange they've been given permission to do business here.

Well…… it's not the kind of place that so many people from town would go out of their way to visit, and even if they did business here, it probably wouldn't have much impact on the local merchants, but the idea of showing consideration to outside merchants or borrowing their strength doesn't seem very Klaus-like.

I don't know him all that well either…… but it's probably someone else's idea.

By the way, those men who left apparently had no direct connection to them.

However, several of the merchants said they'd seen their faces before.

From what I gather, they're people who specialize in guarding merchant caravans, and they travel around various places collecting information on each region.

What they're doing with that collected information…… they didn't know that much, but most likely they're selling it to some big shot somewhere.

Maybe it's because they're in front of us, but they said they have no intention of cooperating with those men…… rather, they seem willing to cooperate with our side, and asked if there's anything we'd like them to do.

I appreciate the sentiment…… but I don't really know what kind of people they are either.

Of course, I didn't say that, but for now it's not necessary…… so I declined.

Instead, I told them that if any soldiers come by on patrol, they should answer if asked anything.

After leaving the construction site, we were moving through the northern part of town again when one of the soldiers asked, "About what happened earlier……"

"Was it alright to show those people Vice-Captain Sera's face? Didn't it put them on guard?"

"It's not like being on guard causes any trouble for us. If anything, wouldn't it be better if that makes them behave?"

"That's certainly better than them causing problems. But…… will that make them behave?"

From their perspective, it probably looked like those men ran off because they noticed us, but the aim was a little different.

"I think it will. Up until now, they seemed to have noticed they were being watched by soldiers from a distance, but we'd never gone up and looked them right in the face like that, right? Once they know their faces have been memorized, it becomes pretty hard for them to move about freely."

Even if they'd noticed the soldiers were there, they'd probably never been spoken to directly like that before.

As a deterrent to make it hard for them to gather, I think that much is plenty enough.
