"Vice-Captain Sera? Good work. ...Are you inspecting the city?"

From the city wall near the north gate, flying further east through the north district brings you to an area where many foreigners make their homes.

As I flew along the city wall in that direction, soldiers patrolling nearby spotted me and called out.

"That's right. You figured it out."

When I told them about what had happened at the city wall earlier, they replied with a laugh.

"You don't usually come around here unless you have business, Vice-Captain Sera."

"And besides... I can't imagine you'd have business here by yourself, so patrol was the only thing I could think of."

"Now that you mention it, you're right."

Normally, when I move through the city, I basically fly above the buildings in a straight line toward my destination.

However, for places like the noble district and this foreign residential area, I've at least avoided passing over the buildings.

So when I, of all people, show up here alone... it's understandable they'd figure I came to check on the city.

"Keep me company while I take a look around here."

I could've looked around on my own, but since I had the chance, I decided to tag along on their patrol.

◇

"Any problems around here?"

Because many relatively wealthy or high-status people from other countries live in this area, there aren't many people out walking the streets.

Instead, guards are properly stationed in front of each building's gate.

Some places do hire our adventurers, but... most are likely people they brought with them.

When we first joined up, the guards' gazes were on us, so we stayed silent for a while as we moved, but after turning a corner and figuring it was all right, I asked about the state of the city.

It was a fairly vague question, but they still seemed to have a few concerns.

"Right... You're aware that the Knight Order did a sweep of this area all at once, right?"

"Yeah."

If anything, it started because I'd flown around overhead and found it.

That's exactly why I'm flying at ground level today, so I don't needlessly provoke them...

"Is it related?"

"Most of the households were basically fine, but... they seem wary, or rather cowed, and even people who've recently arrived in the city don't seem to want to go in and out of other houses much."

"I don't know if it's instead of that... but the sight of guards moving about stands out. Also, the frequency of those guards going out into the city at night has increased compared to previous years."

I get avoiding conspicuous behavior and staying quiet at home, and sending a trusted guard as a proxy... well, I guess I get that too?

Since those guards aren't the ones talking directly, it inevitably turns into exchanging letters, and if that happens, I can see why the frequency of coming and going increases.

"It's not particularly strange, but... at night too? The adventurers seem to be staying quiet, though..."

According to the adventurers' information, even though they exchange information, they've been relatively quiet... that's how it seemed, but around here it seems different.

"Probably, even if those adventurers are hired as guards, their job is only guarding the route, not guarding the residence."

"So that's... where they act separately. ...You said they're going out at night, but are they doing anything problematic?"

"Nothing at the moment. But in the north district there are several plots still under construction, like the former orphanage site, so it's not ideal for them to be walking around too much..."

"Hmm..."

"That said, we can't restrict their actions, much less directly demand anything from their masters..."

There are proper night guards, and even if they had some scheme, I don't think they could pull it off easily... but it might be causing needless stress, so it might be good to deal with it early.

Maybe I'll pass a word to Rick or August.
