This episode always destroys me emotionally. I actually think the backstory placement after Ace's death and during Luffy's grieving was perfect. There really wasn't a better place for it. We already cared plenty about Ace, the backstory just makes you care even more. edit: 505: 20:49 "I know he said no" LMFAO, yeah no way did Luffy say yes to Archeology lessons.
Also, most pirates in general are enemies of each other. "Emperor" is just the informal title given to the 4 most influential and powerful pirates in the new world
You finally got to my personal favorite scene. Luffy remembering his friends. Shit gets me crying every time.

505 is one of my favorite episodes. Perfect OST choices. So much buildup with the war and the brothers flashback all leads to Luffy overcoming his pain and the viewers feeling like they truly understand the weight of what he was feeling. Coupled with the fact that while Luffy wants to see the crew, we as viewers also miss them so much. :(
The emperors are definitely enemies. Try to forget the notion that pirates work together just because their common enemy is the government. That is not the way most pirates in this series feel about each other.
Watching this with Jack is probably my 3rd complete time I've watched the entire thing. Instead of it getting easier, episodes like this just keep hitting me harder every time. The extra baggage and knowing what's coming is just twisting that knife extra.

Dadan seeing Garp again destroys me every time
Same. I still don't agree with what Garp did, I think he should have allied with the Whitebeard pirates and rescued Ace. That's your family, you can never get that back. Plus the Marines are corrupt af anyway, and Ace was a kind man who only improved the lives of everyone he met. The only real counterpoint is maybe Garp felt like he had to stay in the Navy to keep them in check from the inside... I guess? doesn't seem worth trading Ace's life though. Rescue Ace, then drop off the grid like Rayleigh did. For bonus points, go be Rayleigh's roommate. Most disappointing of all is that Garp is extremely strong. If he had wanted to, he could have rescued Ace.
this arc also helps explain Ace's tattoo. The S that has an X over is represents Sabo. So even while he travelled the world Ace carried Sabo with him
The emperors are enemies, remember Kaido tried to kill Whitebeard but Shanks stoped him
Well idk if he tried to kill him, but maybe he would have tried. It sounded to me like Kaido was going to attack Whitebeard mid route to Marineford but Shanks intercepted him before they made contact and held him off. I assume out of respect for Whitebeard and Ace.
