Yamato is a girl
So Yamato is roleplaying her hero Oden, so she is Oden. Simple as that really, like if a girl said she was Batman.
Everyone who is talking about Yamato "debate" when there is NONE It's literally fictional anime Anyone who has time to argue about it should instead be helping people who haveproblems with identity IN REAL LIFE.
A lot of people want something to gravitate to however end up getting their own personal beliefs and politics into it, which causes the "debate".
Not every reactor completely skipping over the fact that they shove Yamato boobs in your face during the Ace reveal and still not realising it but anyway Ace had his own crew long before joining with WB and that crew is what washed up on Wano when Tama met Ace. Crazy he went all the way up to wano before joining a Yonko crew within like a year of setting out to sea from East Blue
Oh, when I see the Yamato debate situation in the fandom, it makes me happy that i hadn't joined before I caught up with the latest anime/manga chapter because I just accepted what Kaido, Luffy, and the others called Yamato with he or him. It's simple for us who watch the show or read the manga outside the fandom to take these kind of things at face value. I don't know why people popping veins over that so much. I definitely recommend to people who haven't caught up yet, do not get into the fandom before you catch up to get the full experience! Let this be your journey.
This is because the subtitlers and translators had this implicit bias, so you never read Yamato being referred to as a she. This is why it was a problem to begin with. Fans that knew Japanese knew something was off with the translations. Using male pronouns is fine before the reveal that Yamato was Kaidou's daughter. She is given the title Kaidou's son, etc. But once she was revealed to be his daughter, every translator *should* have switched their language. But they didn't because of their political persuasion and fear of trans backlash.
Impressive how 991 is relevant only in the final scene, all the rest can be ignored
I always thought that ever since Yamato declared she wanted to be Oden, Kaido acted as if she really was Oden, and called her his son and treated her with the same disdain he did to Oden in a way. Cause there's no way the child abusing, country strangling, alcoholic captain of the beast pirates would accept Yamato just like that
No Kaido simply doesn't care He specifically says he doesn't acknowledge Yamato being Oden but he can call him whatever he wants

This is a translator bias, btw. They did this intentionally. Third person pronouns are relatively rare in Japanese. They are usually used as disambiguators only. Yamato is never referred to with "Kare" (he/him).

Kaido is obviously a fan of letting Yamato do what he wants. So much so that kaido asked “to get his son” (and they literally do say son in Japanese). When a genocidal murderer is more accepting then *gestures at America*
