Oiran was traditionally the highest ranks of courtesans in Japan centuries ago. And by courtesans, yes, I mean very exclusive classy escorts who entertain rich clients with music, dance, and sometimes selling their bodies (the highest ones can choose who gets that). They were celebrities, nicknamed "castle topplers" (like homewrecker?). When Japan outlawed prostitution, the practice died in favor of hostess geisha, but dressing like "Oiran" still exists today for the purpose of cultural heritage at festivals, etc.
