I think Thorkell's weakness is his jaw because of his size and strength, it's rare someone lands a hit on him at all - let alone way up there. Thorfinn with his acrobatic style and Askeladd's coaching was able to exploit that weakness.
Askeladd is a norwegian folktale character, a boy who goes up against trolls and other strange beings. In some stories he gets the princess and half the kingdom. The name is a combination of Ash and Lad (Boy). So boy of ash or ashen boy.

I like the interaction between Askeladd and Atli at the end. Askeladd despises Danes and generally sees them only as vicious animals and tools to fulfill his goals, but I do think the sincerity that Atli shows him makes him see that they're not all the same and so he sends him away to spare him from the battles that are yet to come.
ask - a - lad to me is still wild lmao, his name literally means covered in ash, as in "ash-e-lad"
Canute is the best written character in vinland saga. Also, love the floki hate.
