I recall thanking all the hospital staff constantly when I went in for my FFS and them having pretty much the same reaction like "eh I do this every day"
Damn, I finally listen to this one a month before vaginoplasty
One more thing: I've had general anesthetic once when I was about 12 and they gave me a 'pre-med' which I can only guess was a benzo of some kind? Made the 20 mins before surgery fun as hell and I couldn't stop giggling as they wheeled me in.
Anyone come across the theory of quantum consciousness (microtubules as quantum substrate etc.) as a potential/partial explanation for why anesthesia (some kinds anyway) works? I'd forgotten about it until this episode hit on some related points, so guess I'm off down that rabbit hole again!
such a good episode, well done all!
I'm a voice actor in training, and to get my Scottish accent going, I was listening to awful audiobooks that were basically what if jk Rowling wrote crappy highland detective stories. This episode is way better...I mean bettah
it's also an amazing episode. I kinda forgot to mention that.
Gotta say, it was pretty wild listening to this one while I was up all night writhing in pain from what turned out to be a bladder infection

On Eastern Block trained specialists: Back in the apartheid days, the ANC made the decision that South Africa was not going to suffer the ignominy of having all the white technical specialists leave when freedom came, as happened to all its neighbours. Selected folks were smuggled out of the country to be trained up to take over when the time came. One of them was trained in how to manage nuclear reactors. I can't remember which country he went to (Yugoslavia or Czechoslovakia maybe), but afterwards he came to Australia, where my family hosted him until he settled in. He was not a happy man, mostly because he was an expert in nuclear power, perhaps the most expert in his particular field in Australia at the time, and he was forced to drive a taxi for a living. As it turned out, he didn't need to drive taxis for long. Post apartheid he ran the South African nuclear energy agency and oversaw the dismantling of South Africa's nuclear weapons. He was also the first person to tell me that the vela incident was an Israeli nuclear test, long before that incident even became public.
The Guinea Pig Club was mentioned in this episode, my grandpa on my mom’s side of the family was a member of that. I know more about East Grinstead than most Canadians, and I’m thankful for all that they did there
IGels are the fastest way for me to take an airway when a patient tries to die on us
I LOVE iGels

I love a general anaesthetic. Feels like someone is doing a complete shut down and restart of my existence.
Waking up after is always the most bizarre experience, it's like you closed your eyes for a second and suddenly you're somewhere new and VERY stoned 😆
Brief mention of my local hospital, predictably in the context of fatal malpractice... We're pretty sure they changed the name from Mayday to Croydon University Hospital just to stop people calling it the Maydie Hospital. I was being taken to it in an ambulance once and the paramedic was like "everyone calls it the Maydie, lol"...
Nova: "I get to tell my favorite pre anesthesia surgery story!" Me: "she's gonna bring up the 300% fatality surgery"
"Stop making us upload those!" No. How else can I slip into the waiting arms of Morpheus to the sound of Liam's "profound vomiting"?
Baseball was invented in the 1850s. I recall in Ken Burns’s civil war they made mention that the Union soldiers played baseball at fort sumpter during the siege and it was “new” at the time
Union general Abner Doubleday is widely regarded as the inventor of modern baseball in fact! Victoria's anecdote about that book series unlocked a DEEP childhood memory, I think I read that same one.
Coming round from anesthesia I looked my poor mother square in the face, said "I want my mum", turned over and went back to sleep.
I can sympathize with the dentist bit. My family has some resistance to novocaine and pain killers. Once received, unless the dentist was doing a placebo move, two boosters. Still felt that beeping drill for the filling.
Some people’s purpose in life is to serve as a terrible warning.
Gas gas gas
"Doctor Benway is operating in an auditorium filled with students..."
If you watch any black & white film dealing with surgery pre-1950, good chance you'll see that!
Help the anesthesia is preventing me from seeing the slides
I’ve been too heavily ethered, can’t see shit.
Shout out to the U.S. civil war surgery that had a 300% lethality rate. The patient died, an assistant who was knicked by the surgeon later died of infection, and an observer to the surgery died of a heart attack witnessing the affair
It seems I have been faithless in my comment
can't believe i'm not even the first person seeing this when they have a surgery coming up. might listen to it in the midazolam haze for extra authentiticty
Bro I have a surgery coming up don't do this to me
Hell yeah! Just audio, just before I take my dog for his daily 7 mile walk!
Just in time for the gym
YOOOOO JUST AUDIO IMMEDIATELY
