A day in the Alps [SHORT STORY]

The morning began with a sky so clear it felt almost new. Sunlight poured gently over the peaks of the Alps, painting the rocky ridges in pale gold.
The air was crisp but warm enough to promise a comfortable day of walking. Birds sang from high branches, their calls echoing across the valleys, while a steady breeze slipped through the pine trees, carrying the scent of resin and distant snow.

The trail wound through rolling meadows dotted with wildflowers. Blue gentians clustered in the grass, and small white edelweiss clung bravely to patches of stone. With each step, the world seemed quieter and wider at the same time. Occasionally, you passed a small stream where meltwater danced over rocks, its soft murmur blending with the rustle of leaves overhead.

Hours passed easily. The rhythm of walking, breathing, and listening to the mountain settled your thoughts. The path eventually curved around a slope, and there, perched on a gentle rise, stood a wooden chalet. Its beams contrasted with the bright summer sky, and thin smoke drifted lazily from its chimney.

Curious and ready for a rest, you approached the chalet and pushed open the sturdy wooden door. Inside, the air was pleasantly cool.
Sunlight filtered through small windows, illuminating polished tables and shelves lined with bottles and mugs. The faint smell of herbs and fresh bread made the place feel lived-in and comforting.

Then you noticed the barmaid, and after a brief moment of surprise, you offered a polite hello. The barmaid looked up from her work and returned the greeting with a calm, welcoming smile.

She stood behind the counter, wiping a glass, her expression calm but observant. What surprised you most was that she was clearly not entirely human. She had the features of a fox — soft reddish fur, alert ears, and a large, graceful tail — yet her posture and manner were unmistakably that of someone accustomed to welcoming travelers. Her figure was striking and confident, and she wore a simple alpine dress suited to the warmth of the season.

For a moment, you wondered if the long walk and bright sun had made your imagination wander. But the fox girl simply smiled politely, as though such encounters were perfectly ordinary in these mountains.

“Long walk?” she asked, her voice soft and friendly.

“Yes,” you reply with an appreciative smile, still catching a hint of the mountain air in your breath.

With a small nod toward the counter, you add that after such a pleasant hike, you would very much like two cold beers.

You take your beers outside and step into the warm mountain light.
Sitting there, listening to the breeze outside and the faint chime of bells from distant grazing animals, the situation felt less strange and more like part of the quiet magic of the mountains. Perhaps unusual things had always lived in remote places, far from busy towns.

After resting for a while, you thanked the fox girl for the refreshments. She gave a small nod and a knowing smile, as though travelers passing through her chalet were nothing unusual at all.

Stepping back outside, the sunlight felt even brighter than before. The birds were still singing, the wind still moving gently through the trees, and the trail continued upward into the wide and beautiful landscape.
