Changing Natural Minor to Harmonic Minor
This unscripted video lesson shows how to take the 3 Notes Per String Scale/Mode Shapes in the key of A minor, and change them to A Harmonic Minor.
(Yes, raw and unscripted, so there are few goof-ups when I play! This was originally going to just be a video recap for a student - but this seemed worth sharing for everyone.)
After that, I show how to take these somewhat unfriendly-to-play patterns, and convert them to condensed, finger-friendly shapes.
The notes in A Natural Minor = A, B, C, D, E, F, G
The notes in A Harmonic = A, B, C, D, E, F, G#
The modes in A Natural Minor (and their intervals) next to their Harmonic Minor counterparts:
A Aeolian = 1, 2, b3, 4, 5, b6, b7 → A Harmonic Minor = 1, 2, b3, 4, 5, b6, 7
B Locrian = 1, b2, b3, 4, b5, b6, b7 → B Locrian Natural 6 = 1, b2, b3, 4, b5, 6, b7
C Ionian = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 → C Ionian #5 = 1, 2, 3, 4, #5, 6, 7
D Dorian = 1, 2, b3, 4, 5, 6, b7 → D Dorian #4 = 1, 2, b3, #4, 5, 6, b7
E Phrygian = 1, b2, b3, 4, 5, b6, b7 → E Phrygian Dominant = 1, b2, 3, 4, 5, b6, b7
F Lydian = 1, 2, 3, #4, 5, 6, 7 → F Lydian #2 = 1, #2, 3, #4, 5, 6, 7
G Mixolydian = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, b7 → G# Super Locrian bb7 = 1, b2, b3, b4, b5, b6, bb7
Scale shapes are attached to this post.
