Strive Sequel: General info and Race details

So this is basically an announcement of me going into process of starting the overall design planning. So few things to mention before I go into details.

Firstly, I can't quite decide if I want to keep things in the same setting as Strive 1, as it has some limitations I'm not quite willing to deal with (most notably, lack of offensive magic, and rather universalized racial cultures). This might not be very apparent why, but once I go into details, it will be more obvious. So it's either I go for a different universe, or great deal of time skip.

Now, another important thing, which stems from Displaced, is that I want to make Strive sequel way more about resource management and crafting. Eventually Strive 1 reserved supplies and combat tools, but that mostly happened after main economy has been set.

I know what some of you might think: "This will make game too complex and a chore", but my personal game design philosophy is to make things escalate gradually, so hopefully it won't be any harder than current game is (and current game is probably fairly harder than it should be).

So what's the deal with races in new game? The biggest issue with races in strive 1 is that races don't stand out in gameplay sense. For sequel races I intend to use a new "rule set" of what race defines:

  • Food preferences (consumption, favorite/disliked food)

  • Body strength

  • Magic strength

  • Obedience growth

  • Fear resist

  • Number of allowed professions and access to certain skills

  • Sexual growth

  • Initial stats

As you can see, my goal is to make every race to feel special by providing them all with different details. I.e. the dragonkin will eat a lot more than a human and will have a terrible temper. The fairy will have a gigantic magic boost, but terrible physical capabilities.

The second big change are the professions, which will partly replace specializations and party skill/spell access. Every slave will only be able to obtain a limited number of professions, so professions will determine the 'build' of slave. For example, the normal slave will be able to gather 66% of food from hunting, but after unlocking "Hunter" profession he will be gathering 100% and also will be able to equip bows. Some professions will be unlocking specific combat skills and spells, while others will gain a considerable stat boost. Certain professions will be locked behind earlier professions, i.e. to become a "Mage", the slave will have to become an "Apprentice" first. Others will be only available for certain classes and so on.

Besides that many professions will provide unique skills which will be usable either socially or in combat. I.e. The "Watchdog" profession will require a certain amount of loyalty and will have an option to punish or praise other slaves in your place.

This was a brief introduction on Strive's sequel main changes. Thank you for the attention and let me know what you think.

This post made me extend my support. I like the idea of races mattering more. Strive 1 had some balancing issues, what I really wish for 2 is a hard mode that makes it a true challenge. That would improve the replayability in my opinion.

Thank you and welcome back :) Replayability will be one of the main goals for strive 2.

Might be asking for too much here but: Would be great if you could add an option to let users create and import custom potential slaves to be found inside the game world as random encounters. A person could make a text file on a set format that would populate the name, gender, starting stats and everything else. Add few images the game can pull from into a special folder to use as a graphic. This way everyone can contribute and share their own characters.

If a universe change makes sense depends pretty much on what you wanna do with the setting. I'll explain and this is only my opinion: With a new universe you can pretty much do whatever you want, though it should'nt be similar to the old one, that would kinda be weird. With the same universe but f.e. in the future or on a different continent, you can keep the story and refer to it for story telling but still do things different. To explain the changes you could imagine an world changing event. For the magic you could use something different like a pure "rune" based magic or one thats entirely based on items like magic "rifles" or armor, this would also go well with you wanting more crafting.

I would recommend to try to 'keep the good parts' of Strieve 1's worldbuilding, but change the things you feel you could do better.

I think the uniqueness of the races is cool. In games like this, imagination should play a crucial role, so let's give it more “food” =)

I agree with everyone else on the new universe bit, though everything else I think is a bit over my head as far as where exactly you are going with this. So all I have to say is good luck on the project I am looking forward to seeing what you create.

Damn this sounds like a step up and in the right direction. I loved the first Struve and this is just even more of what I loved about it. You’ve got my full support 10/10

Yeah, liking pretty much all of this. More crafting and options there could make building your holdingsa more involved process than 'sell slave, spend gold,' which I'm always in favor of. I'm in agreement that a new setting might be a good idea. From the sound of it Strive was a very 'learn what I'm doing' sort of game, and not having to deal with baggage is a plus. Only thing I'd request is that the ramping up of resources be something you've got to pull the trigger on through guild progression or something, so wusses like me can get everything prepaired slowly, and more hardcore people can rush into having to carefully balance everything.

I'd say go with a new universe. I like the idea of more resource and crafting management, however, some better/easier UI menus would be a must. Currently, in order to assign beds you have to click on each girls' screen and assign individually. This is more complicated when you have four different bed options and remembering who is sleeping where. A single screen that had a list of all beds and the ability to assign girls from there would make it simpler and give you a more "at a glance" view. Similar issues with assigning tasks, to see how many are assigned to hunting you have to click through the list and count each role. I definitely love the idea of different races having more different or unique traits/personalities.

Mav. will there be more races and more differences in how they look. Like Say a lamia from the marsh would have different scale colour from a lamia from the sea. Also new ways to upgrade, like getting bricks and wood to make building. Also More buildings where you can craft weapons, ect. Strive 1 was great. but would love to see it grow more. Also if you almost done with strive then can you add a final sex scene with The foxy tutorial girl, my biggest regret playing I never once got to get it on with her. lol

i think resource mangement is a fun thing, to some degree. your whole race overhauls seems pretty good , food managment: yay for a healthy diet no more "only meat" for days and why do i think a slime will be fairly easy to feed?i hope you take into consideration how easy it was to optain a slave, pretty much battle whatever you want and put a rope on it, there was no difference if your target was nobility or a simple slave (besides a minor -rep). maybe now if you obtain a "legal spoil of war" aka a bad guy, one could pay a small fee or trade in some "favour" to "legally obtain" it. on the other hand enslaving an innocent villager should be harder/ more expensive maybe add some way of notoriety. as a noble you could pretty much then use your influence (to keep the dark theme) meanwhile a commoner might have a harder time. the displaced crafting is pretty cool, hope you will use it/something similar. also it was a bit strange to get mansion upgrade points from selling obedient slaves, yet woodcutting in gorn gave you only gold and slave catching was also not really planed out . (i know mansion upgrade points were used a a guild "token" to ensure you are ready/worthy to increase your household). tapnis bloodmagic idea : sacrifice offspring *cough* or... "sent them into the world as an adventurer"

Kyle Chedumbrum · April 12, 2019

Yea I wouldn't mind a new universe, you could do different stuff with magic like Tapni says since the majority of historical magic has mostly been curses, buffs/blessings and rituals. You could potentially make quest chains for dark magic and religious magic or something or have multiple religions/gods or something with each granting different stuff and instead of buying magic it could be learned through different quests. You could also set it in a kingdom where the player starts as a minor noble and through quests could get a duchy or something to help with the progressive difficulty giving the player more responsibilities.

Tapni · April 12, 2019

As a mage player I'm annoyed that in every game you're in all intents and purposes a run of a mill mage. Not that there is anything wrong with a barrage of fireballs but I would hope there will also be some sort of ritual magic that will give unique buffs for the main character and/or mansion. Maybe requiring great sacrifices in form of personal stats or specificly prepapared slaves. For example it would be nice to have access to blood magic without it being sold in every store next to lollipops.

Mighty Putt Putt · April 12, 2019

This sounds like an aggressively hard rpg/resource management game with lewd scene. Genius.

Zachary Melah · April 12, 2019

Will there be side jobs for the player? like becoming an adventurer and completing repeatable quests, or even starting their own merchant company? I'm only asking cause i thought it might be worth while to add jobs that the player could do as alternate ways of earning money other than story quests or the repeatable stuff from the guild.

M
Maverik · April 12, 2019

Hard to say at this point as firstly we need to lay a solid basis. I have a feeling that player will also be able to work on normal tasks.

B
Blckforest45 · April 12, 2019

That will make it more interesting and difficult. I look forward to playing it.

B
Blckforest45 · April 12, 2019

Will certain races have professions that are only unlockable by that particular race to maybe make that race more special than others?

M
Maverik · April 12, 2019

Yes, this is the plan.

A
Acedia · April 12, 2019

Will traits inheritance be in Strive 2?

M
Maverik · April 12, 2019

It's a bit hard to say at this point how traits will be implemented, but it's likely will be the case.
