Primes
Prime symbols are quote-like symbols that can be used for different purposes in different fields of study: from indicating mathematical units, to musical notation, to specific ways of pronouncing letters.
There are many prime symbols:
Single ′
Double prime ″
Triple prime ‴
Quadruple prime ⁗
Their reverse equivalents (‵, ‶, ‷)...
And HTML has ways of representing them as single characters:
Prime: ′ or ′
Double prime: ″ (notice the capital P) or ″
Triple prime: ‴ or ‴
Quadruple prime: ⁗ or ⁗
This cartoon shows how to write some prime symbols and finally introduces a "new" one: &oprime; that generates the silhouette of Optimus Prime from Transformers.
I was thinking about posting this cartoon next Tuesday and make it coincide with April's Fools. That way make the "double joke" of the cartoon plus insinuating the the W3C announced a new HTML symbol... and you wouldn't believe what it is!
