#155 Anthropology & Materialism Pt 1 w/ Daniel Bitton
This week I’m delighted to welcome Daniel Bitton to the show. Daniel is the man behind the ‘What is Politics’ podcast, where he recently did a deep dive into the anthropological research about immediate return hunter and gatherer communities. We discuss the importance of this research for a liberatory politics, and dispel the capitalist myth that freedom requires inequality.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvUzdJSK4x8 I haven't watched it in a while but i though David had a similar line as the fight like animal guy and said that yes material conditions are important but the equality in hunter gather societies are a result of political struggle
I think the point Arnold was making was that it's not a simple material conditions imply outcome A, but that there is a tendency from the material conditions to lead society down a particular path. And that the path is made up of actions by conscious actors with respect to the material conditions. Thats my understanding. I may be wrong, but I know that Daniel and Arnold have been talking a lot together and i got the distinct impression from Daniel that they are singing from the same hymn sheet. But I could be wrong :)
