Making a Yoked Shirt Pattern // Some 1940's Inspired Shirts
It's all about shirts this week! In addition to the style of shirt I made over on the channel, I have this yoked shirt style for you all over here on Patreon!
As I have been saying recently, there are about a billion different options when it comes to making shirts, how the button overlap is handled, how the sleeve cuffs are done, the collar styles, yokes, differing amounts of ease etc! This is just one other option that seemed to be rather popular in the 1940's and 1950's. And here again is the helpful sleeve tab blog post I have been referencing to do mine: http://off-the-cuff-shirtmaking.blogspot.com/2014/01/tutorial-shirt-sleeve-placket.html
I am super sorry if I seem a bit scatter brained in this video, and in this week's channel video too for that matter. I've been a bit overwhelmed behind the scenes, with some vet visits and a leaky kitty (my little buddy Cleo is having some bladder issues, I have been spending a lot more time doing laundry lately than I would normally), and we had family in town for a few days earlier in the week which has set me way behind on my current project. If I'm fully honest, I'm feeling more than a little burnt out, so thank you for putting up with a more disorganized me while I work through things. I know I need some rest, and my trip is coming up soon here in September, but of course I have over loaded my schedule with things to get done before I go. Classic me really!
I do want to put together a video going over some of the things I have made for and been prepping for my trip, so I'll be trying to get together a little show and tell video on that for next month too before I pack up the car. I'll catch up fully in the podcast soon, tank you for your support this month!

My daughters wil fully agree with you about all the difficulties in making a blouse. Not long ago I taught them how to make a blouse dress and they were overwhelmed with all the details.
i wanted to say that the back "tab placket" to fix the "bum" area blew my mind. I was like "wait, that would be such a cute idea", I tend to wear my shirts out instead of tucked in. since I had a hysterectomy I am very self-conscious of my abdominal area, hence why I wear my shirts out instead of in. This would allow me to have nice detail and make room without being too boxy. Again, thank you for this idea. I know you were just trying to "fix" but it created a new idea for garment making to solve my own body image issues.
I just love your videos, both here and on the other channel. I always learn new things, plus I really like your sense of humor. In the last video you said " Well, now we know my brain and mouth are no longer communicating" and this time you said, "Now my brain has died..that's good to know"...I just burst out laughing because we viewers know that is so not true! I was talking to my screen saying, 'put in the seam allowance' on the front and wondered when you realized it was missing and did it feel ok when you put it on? I'm wondering if the seam allowance changed the 'feel' of the fit. Anyway, you are so talented and such a trooper in putting together these videos for us. Yes!, get some sleep. Please don't go hiking through the parks alone...stay with a group or at least near a group, just in case you fall or possibly get dehydrated. Hikers are very helpful when someone needs assistance. Many of them carry satellite phones because it's hard to get cell service to call for help/assistance. A friend of mine always wears a hat when she is hiking as birds seem to like to poop when she walks under them! Sounds like good advice to me! Congrats on the two shirts! They look great.
.....and take a big arse knife, just in case ;) Not that you will need it. Safe travels Bianca & enjoy your well earned break
Saremy has a great video for shirt plackets (tower plackets) that I think is even easier than the way you're using! It's using an all-in-one placket piece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIwdE3NdmEw
Thank you, I just looked up this video and have saved it to my sewing tutorial playlist.
I've learned more from you and Saremy from Sew Sew Live than any pattern book! Thank you for showing the alterations to the pattern after the first shirt - sooooo helpful!
Thank you Samantha!
The sleeve placket/tab business reminds me a bit of welted pockets or buttonholes, with the whole "sew things to one side, cut a tiny triangle, then flip things to the other side" aspect. These turned out great! Can't wait to hear all about the trip.
So many fiddly steps is all grr! Thanks Caitlin!
....and she is 5 years old so DEFINITELY no need for side darts or waist darts at this stage - she is a gorgeous little stick insect !!!!
Thanks Bianaca - I really appreciate your help & will take your advice. I am looking forward to wasting a bit of scrap fabric and making some mock-ups. I looked everywhere for an all in one sleeve for e child's top/dress but they don't seem to exist.
Hi Bianca - totally unrelated question. I have drafted a bodice block for my daughter (based on the Surefit system) but there is no side dart. I want to make an all in one sleeve pattern for her (sewing sleeves into a little ones dress is a NIGHTMARE for me) - do you think your tutorial on drafting an all in one sleeve would still work on a childs bodice block? I am thinking of just playing around with it, but thought that you (or someone else on here) might have some tips to help me out. Thanking you in advance, Kellie
I'm not sure how little we're talking here, so disclaimer I have never tried to make children's clothing of any kind myself 😅 I do believe really little ones sometimes don't need darts at all, so I imagine one could just sorta draw on the square-ish shaped sleeves from the armscye area. Think of how T-shirts are sorta T shaped, same idea really with all-in-one sleeves or "grown on" sleeves as they are also sometimes called. If you ever have a bodice with say only one waist dart, you can always close half of the waist dart to open a new side dart, and then use that new side dart in helping to make the all-in-one sleeve. I've definitely never attempted a children's pattern though, so I really have no idea I'm afraid!
I hope Cleo feels better soon. I've had to handle urinary track problems with cats. I hope you and her vet can find a solution, even if that's just a change in food 💚
They have started her on a new food, and some thyroid meds I rub on her ears twice a day now, but we still have to figure out the urine issue 😩 It's a good thing she is very cute!
I really liked how these shirts turned out! Even if you couldn't wear a regular neck tie with them, this is, like, THE opportunity to try out a bolo tie! I'm feeling inspired to get back to trying to sew (even though I have to wait until it's not sweltering here in Tennessee).
Thank you Chae! I don't think I could ever go fully bolo tie myself 😂 Tooled leather belts/bags I can do, horsehair hat stampede strings even, I've got 'em, but bolo tie may be a step too far lol 🤠
Really liked both of your shirt videos! A lot of the details that go into a shirt still seem a bit like magic to me, so it's great to have your explanations going through the process, and especially how to put in the sleeve plackets. Hope the air quality by you improves soon!
Thank you! ❤ All the details for sleeves really do make them feel like they take ages to make
Oh, I was so in need of this video. Thanks! My fifth attempt of my bodice block is in the making. Almost finished. If that is done, I think I will start with a blouse ( or a dress. That changes every day 😜. So much possibilities😱 )
I'm glad it was helpful! All the possibilities!!
I'm sorry Cleo is doing poorly. Having had a few cats myself over the years, it is so common for them to develop urinary tract issues in their senior years. Particularly if you have a picky eater that will only eat dry kibble. Biokleen Bac-Out is the best product I have found for eliminating pet odors from textiles. They carry it at vitacost.com for a very good price. https://www.vitacost.com/biokleen-bac-out-stain-and-odor-eliminator-with-foaming-sprayer-32-fl-oz https://www.vitacost.com/biokleen-bac-out-stain-and-odor-eliminator-lime
Thank you for the tip!! I have been washing many towels on repeat 😩
*le sigh* Joann’s does indeed have a long history of being opportunistic and taking advantage of their employees (or neglecting their employees, specifically ignoring sexual harassment charges presented by female employees against male employees). In a pinch, yeah, they’re there, but I’m with you on avoiding them when possible. On a different note, do you foresee the air quality impacting your vacation plans? As in, do you anticipate having to alter them or cancel? I hope not for your sake! We all deserve a vacation right about now 😂.
Luckily the fires won't effect my travel route, but the smoke in the air will/may effect the views along my journey, so I won't know until I get there how much haze is clouding the vistas really 😎
The shirt and slacks are a nice change, they give you an “authorly” look. Your videos bring me happiness and enjoyment. Thank you and I hope little Cleo feels better soon. 🐈⬛💚
Thank you Penny!
I have enjoyed your videos for years; living vicariously through your sewing adventures & enjoying the catalogs, Not a lot of interest in tackling a clothing project. But I really want to make a shirt now!
Thank you! ❤
They're lovely. I was hoping you'd do one with a yoke! For anything that extended below my waist I was taught to use my skirt block as a base to avoid similar "bum" dilemmas. Although I get that some of your viewers might only have the bodice block to hand so you kept it simple 😊
Thank you Heather! I just never make stuff without a waist seam, so I forget how to officially do it because it's been years 😂
