Modern Pattern Design Practice Problems // 2 Drafting Experiments
Hello there! Sorry for the delay on this month's video! I started packing a few etsy orders yesterday and time flew away out from underneath me. I hope you enjoy seeing these two more advanced flat pattern drafting manipulation experiments today!
Let me know which of the extra little videos I mention at the end of this video you would like to see most, and thank you so much for your support!

I've downloaded the book. Thanks!! Love it
Just going back and watching some of your pattern drafting that you did before I ‘discovered’ you. This one is some serious voodoo magic! I love it. Just need to find a way to use it. Maybe I need some rainbow pj’s :).
I really love seeing you patterndrafting more complex styles
Man, the second one is so confusing. I am impress that you could understand that so clearly.
These muslins are cool and helpful! Might be fun to see these mock-ups in a cheap gingham or other light pattern to help understand the way the dart manipulation changes the style. Thanks as always!
loved this one, hoping to see more of these. thx for the book.
Absolutely fascinating. I’ve really learnt so much from watching you do all this drafting. I would have seen a commercial pattern with those designs and thought, oh hell no! However seeing this broken down made it seem much more accessible overall.
Thank you Marie! These are definitely "oh hell no" at first glance level designs for sure 😅
This was amazing! Very inspiring 🤩 Thank you so much for these demonstrations.
Thank you Amy!
Wedges Of Fullness is my prog rock band name :)
Your pattern drafting is amazing. You have been giving me the courage to at least make new pattern pieces for my own fit from existing patterns. I did the third mock up for a pair of pants and I think I have the pattern where I need it now. Thanks for being such an inspiration (from someone in your mom's generation...)
Thank you Megan! I hope the pants pattern has behaved itself!
I LOVED this. I have seen the gathering in a few vintage patterns I have but not tackled yet. I like both. The second one would be good under a button up suit jacket I think. The first one would be good with an a-line skirt. I am assuming a back zipper for both would would, or a side zip based on preference. I like your patten drafting videos but a look at old catalogues are great for ideas I suppose. Whatever you choose I typically enjoy, :-)
Thank you Joline! More catalogs coming up soon for sure!
Loved this experimental pattern drafting! I really like the stripy one, especially seeing the magic of the dart manipulation blending everything into the design. Thank you for sharing this with us. So cool whew! ✨ Regarding upcoming videos, I also vote for the lookbook first. It’s very inspiring to see how you style it all :D While we’re here… may I ask if you would consider making a pattern drafting video of a 1940s shirtdress ? I’m drawn to those looks from the catalogs and would be fun to see your take on it :)
Thank you Núria! I can certainly show how to make a shirt dress pattern soon! That is a great idea, especially because I'd rather demo that one in muslin. Maybe then I can also show how to make the shirt dress bodice into just a shirt, because for whatever reason I just don't like shirtdresses on myself 😅
I'll always love a lookbook of any makes - you're projects are inspiring.
Thank you Shakira!
Your explanation is very clear to me. I loved this video. More please!
Thank you Sofie!
I love the pattern drafting! I feel like I am finally starting to grasp the concepts you outline. I’m excited to make my block and start messing around with it.
Thank you Susie! It does feel a bit like magic ✨
I would love to see more of these drafting videos. The book you linked is a bit difficult to understand and you are excellent at explaining. I vote for the stapy bodice. If you can, can you make short vidoes on your personal makes.
Thanks Hanna! The book leaves a lot to the reader, as if "and of course you understand so I don't need to explain" but like...we need /some/ instructions please!! 😅
I really enjoyed this pattern drafting!! I too kept referring back to the original image to follow along. Thank you for that forethought 😺I'd have to draw in the seam allowance so I didn't get too lost 🙃 Both of these styles would be statement pieces with the right fabric/colours. Thank you very much for the link to the book. That was so kind!! It would be lovely to see a mini lookbook and the catalogue when you get time. I really like your aesthetic and styling and I always learn something new. Please be sure to make time for you and for your writing. Life can get in the way of the things we need to survive. Stay safe. Sending best wishes and good vibes from Down Under 💚📚🇦🇺😎
Thank you Rhonda! Life (ahem, etsy) has very much been in the way the last few weeks, but I'm looking forward to some writing time and a break at the start of July here woo! ✨🥰
I think this might be my favorite Patreon exclusive yet! Advanced pattern drafting demonstrations are pretty few and far between, and seeing these more complicated manipulations really gets me excited about playing around with design possibilities myself. :D I wouldn't be very helpful with narrowing down ideas for future videos, as I honestly enjoy everything you share with us, but a lookbook is always fun. And P.S. I'm interested in getting a larger scanner for digitizing my vintage pattern magazine collection (for preservation/personal use), so I look forward to hearing about your recent purchase!
Thank you Lacey! I felt like it was time for some more advanced patterns just for fun ✨ I went for a very fancy scanner, as I was able to find a refurbished one for nearly half off the original cost, so here's hoping it works eeeeek!!!!
This was so fun, I love watching all these crazy dart-moving examples. And yes to the mini lookbook!
Thanks Caitlin! It seems folks want to see the secret projects indeed 😂❤
You haven't done a look book for a while, I don't think, so I vote for that. But I'd also watch the catalog flip, too.
Thanks Rob!
You are a genius at pattern drafting and manipulation of darts! Good thing you kept the original image from the book on screen for us at all times, I found myself constantly looking back and forth at it just to keep up with you. It was like sudden death overtime there a few times, so intense! Even with just muslin these two tops look terrific. I think I like the first one best, it would make a nice recital top, maybe with longer sleeves. The second one is also nice, but with all of the gathering you'd have a hard time finding a spot to pin a brooch! I'd love to see what other things you sewed off-camera, even just as show and tell like with your hats. Applause from Canada!
Thank you Penny! Yes the second one may be too busy for jewelry, which just won't do with my accessorizing habits 😂
This video was so much fun! I hope you'll put together another of these in the future! I learned so much watching you manipulate the darts, and both turned out so interestingly. Thank you for linking the book so we can all check it out :)
Thank you! I can definitely try more practice patterning in the future!
Thank you for this! Way too advanced for me to do, but thoroughly enjoyed watching you construct these patterns. It’s so interesting to see what can be done with dart manipulation. I would love to see the catalog!
Thank you Jaime! I don't normally do anything quite this advanced either ha!
I love your videos, you can do both of then? mini lookbook and Catalog? Please?
Thank you Artemisa! I think it looks like people want the little lookbook first, but I'll try and do the catalog too in the first half of July!
Ooh I loved this pattern manipulation, makes me want to do more pattern drafting tbh so I can have a play. So many ideas! A mini lookbook next would be great 😊
Thank you Beverley!
I really liked the first pattern draft, but the second one was alittle to gathered for me. I guess I am a more smooth front type of woman. They were really interesting to watch though. That second one made my head spin when you first drew it out. Amazing how you were so able to just do it! I need to know how you got the first one pinned up the back!! When I am trying the muslin on I end up using my imagination to 'guess' if I have the dimensions correct. I too keep muslins that turn out well. No reason to keep cutting out the same thing each time. Re: other projects....Whatever you want to do is fine with me. I always learn something new and I find your projects interesting each and every time. I enjoy your sense of humor and your curiosity as to how things will come together in the end. Yes, I do understand your explanations and don't find them confusing at all. Sometimes I back up the video to watch something again as it went by me to quickly, but that has nothing to do with your ability to explain it. I am wondering if you were able to get in writing time like you wanted to? I also hope you can take a vacation! After being inside all of this time, it will be good to have something new to look at!!! Thanks for being you.
Thank you Peggy ❤ Not as much writing time as originally planned this month since Etsy things took much more time than I estimated, but I'll be taking writing time next week thankfully! When I pin these muslins behind my back I basically start by pinning the neckline behind my head first, and then I pin the waist and that's all really. I know my block fits me, so with muslins it's more about "hmm do I want more gathering there?" or other small adjustments. The second one is a little too gathered for me too 😂
Really enjoyed seeing the advanced pattern manipulation(I'm considering adding that book to my vintage pattern drafting collection) and if you feel like making a mini lookbook and have enough time, I'd certainly love to see it.
Thank you! A little show and tell of what I've made on the sly does seem to be winning here!
This may have been way too advanced for me, but I still enjoyed watching! (The second design was a bit mind-bendy. :D) I would love a mini lookbook as well.
Thank you Amber! Yes these ones are definitely on the advanced side of things eek! 😅
Also casting my vote for a mini lookbook! Loved getting a taste of more advanced dart manipulation and am itching to try my hand at that first one. Hope you get to take your vacation soon, you deserve it!
Thank you! Planning for an end of September road trip 😊🎉
Would love to see the mini lookbook 😍
Very cool pattern mods! :0 I'm a monochrome ghoul, so I think the first one would look fantastic alternating matt and shiny black fabric. I really like this type of video, I hope we get to see more! A lookbook of your off-camera projects would be fun! Congrats on the Etsy success and I hope you get to go on holiday soon! I'm finally able to get on a train and go to London and antiquing in a few days -- I'm excited! T_T
Thank you Dee! Antiquing and London both sound dreamy for sure 🤩
I vote sewing projects mini lookbook 😊
Well this looks fun 😁 Can't wait to watch it
