Another One Where I'm Worried I'm too Sassy // Early Access To Tomorrows Video
I filmed an entire two hour long Q&A, destroyed my voice in the process (oops), and then filmed this separate video all about sustainability and sewing. Then I edited this video first this week, even though I was intending to put it out after the "real" Q&A. Except I just went to start editing the Q&A this morning, and for all two hours of footage...I have lipstick on the front of my teeth and I will have to refilm the whole shebang.
Just love that for me really 😩
Anywho, this video just got bumped up to being this week's release, and I am indeed rather nervous about it. It's another one where I fear I am being too sassy, defensive, villainous, or otherwise opinionated to the point where I'm afraid the comment section is going to get interesting. One of my chief fears is that the section about why I don't like using thrifted home décor fabrics may come across as indirect criticism of other creators online, which is not what I want, but I did want to include my honest opinion on that subject.
Also, this is the first time I have ever caved and bought access to stock footage. I knew I wanted to script most of this video, but that I'm not always great at reading a script to camera because that is a lot of words to not flub. There is sadly virtually no way this video will make back what I spent on one month of access to fancy stock footage, but I knew the video would be better if I included it. So thank you for making the investment in 4k footage of oil refineries possible!
Please let me know your thoughts and if you think I'm out of line, thank you for your help and support! ❤

I agree 100% to everything you said :) Only you say it so well :D
Hi my dear Bianca, Hooo boy but have I opinions on this subject. They're on the same lines as yours but without your polite vocabulary. If anyone gets too bad, ban them or stick me on them, your choice of course. As far as I can tell from the other people here on Patreon commenting, I'm sure you are spoilt for choice of defenders and all of us will be on the barricades come morning, I'm sure. On the matter of you feeling your voice is getting sore. I'm a trained opera singer among a bunch of other things, and there are stretch exercises for your vocal cords and the tissue surrounding them to counter act that. There are many voice teachers and coaches out there giving lessons on line. Many, if not all, do both talking and singing, because they the difference is not so great as some people think, and they wouldn't want to halve the student base, by only cater to singers or actors if they can do both. If you want to go that route, expect a free short lesson first to figure out if you like each other, and if you like their pedagogical style. If they don't offer, ask for one. If they don't want to do that I would move on, but that's me. If you would just want a few tips on this matter but not take full voice lessons, you can get back to me and I'd be happy to be of service for free. Keep in mind I'm not a voice teacher though. I'm just an end user with 15 years of experience, so to speak. Yours, Ann

Thanks Jennifer!
Definitely not out of line! I work at a fashion e-commerce company who prides itself in enlarging their “sustainable” assortment and I exhausted my energy into challenging them on the fact that 90% of what they call sustainable is coming from Fast Fashion brands. What are they doing to change that? Of course they don’t dare answer to that because it will harm their $$$. Well some people like to say “would you rather we go outta business?” but the answer is never in the extremes; they could be the game-changers if they were to ~want~ it. Anecdote aside, I also believe it’s an individual choice. A big part for me is to inform myself about the choices I have and make a conscious decision that I can always adjust as I learn new things. Thanks a lot for talking about this; really appreciated the stock photos and data-backed reflection 👏✨
Thank you Núria! I have definitely worked for some companies who have never given sustainability or ethical manufacturing a second thought and it sorta made me sick...but I also needed the work to pay my dang bills because capitalism!! 🙄
Yes, bravo for this video! It was educational and inspiring without being preachy. We all (well, unfortunately not all) know it's about progress, not perfection. And making our own clothes out of good quality fabric is a lot of progress compared to buying that €9.99 polyester blouse from one of the fast fashion brands. Kudos to you!
Thank you Veronika! ❤ There really are very few places making properly nice quality items anymore, so really home sewing is the way to go for several reasons in my opinion 😅
I loved this video. I have strong feelings about fast fashion as well. I haven't purchased anything with polyester in it for years. I can't stand the way it feels against my skin. I'm a cotton, linen, silk and wool woman. I do use some rayon for linings, but I really try to use silk instead. I do have a problem staying warm enough in Winter and most items with down and feathers is now covered with polyester, so I do use that. I have used cold water to wash clothes for years. I thought your presentation was amazing and the sass was great! It wouldn't be you without it and it's always important to be you. Why worry about being opinionated? Do men worry about that? Nope! Women don't need to either. It's how the opinion is stated that makes the difference and you were so careful to be non-judgmental. This is a very complex issue and yet each one of us can do our part, even if it is small overall, to be aware of what we are doing and how it will impact the environment. My husband and I are careful in everything we do to make our best efforts in all facets of our life to keep our energy footprint as small as possible. You made a gallant effort to bring awareness to an important issue and succeeded in doing so! Thank you for your courage in doing this video. Bravo!!
Thank you Peggy! ❤
LOL You may have set the cat among the pigions but love the way you presented your arguments and totally agree that it is up to the individual to decide on their own stance on sustainability. However, it is of concern that children are being frightened out of their wits about climate change whilst the science is still contentious. That is nothing short of child abuse! Shaming someone is no different than bullying someone because they have a different opinion than oneself. Not nice! No doubt we all should be aware of our environmental footprint on this earth and should be actively cleaning up our act as best as we can. The whole topic of sustainability is, as you say, a complex and multi-faceted one. Though, basically the problem is greed for money and power. Look at consumerism, it was purposefully introduced and manipulated not just in fashion but in every facet of our lives. Has anyone noticed how long their white goods, TVs, computers, etc last? They are programmed to last a certain period of time so we have to replace them. Advertising is masterfully used to create desire and competition among the weak. The sewing machines that some of us home sewers are using are vintage and even antique! Why is Bianca from Colorado being called out to explain her stance on sustainability? Who the hell are these people and what gives them the right to judge! Why do these same shamers fawn to the princes and princesses of wealth and power not shame those at the higher end of the food chain that have the gall to preach, moralize and terrify the lower end masses, who for the most part, try to tread lightly on the earth. Well done you sassy, defensive, villainous, or otherwise, educated woman for standing your ground!
Thank you Jennifer!
Yes I like your owl LMAO
I'm obsessed with this video and if anybody give you any sass, you send them my way.
Thank you Cassie! 😂
Oh my goodness! How do you do paragraphs on this thing? 🤣 My message is clearly too long. I just wanted to say that by teaching people to sew well and make things that last you are helping them to be more sustainable and that Is a really good thing 😊 xxx
To make a new paragraph: Shift+Enter. 😎
Hi Bianca, you are awesome and so was this video. I found it so interesting and I don’t think you came across too sassy at all.
I really can’t work out how to create new paragraphs without sending the message 😂 I think with sustainability there is always more we can do and if we care about nature and the environment, we will always feel guilty. Sewing your own clothes is certainly more sustainable than buying a load of polyester fast fashion and the fact that we have to make it, means we are more considered about what we add to our wardrobes. I like to use new and vintage fabrics. I also enjoy buying larger size skirts and dresses from charity shops and using the fabric to make things in my size. I like to think I am recycling and I enjoy the extra challenge but it could be said I am taking away an affordable and sustainable option away from someone in the garment’s original size.
And I am not gonna stop making art. If they come with pitchforks to take my paints... well my actions will be violent.
Amazing, powerful and inspiring!
Thank you Thea! ❤
I think this was the best, most grounded "lecture" on sustainability I've ever seen...
Thank you!!! ❤
OMFG!!! This video needs to be watched by everyone....at least 2X. You are a genius. So well written, expressed, researched, edited. This vid "should" be a college course in and of itself. Just brilliant...and the "right" amount of hilarity. Well done Bianca. Bravo.
Thank you Victoria! ❤
I had a big long thing but I'm going to keep it short and sweet because you've had so many great responses. You're automatically going to have 10% of people that leave negative comments because they're jerks, trolls, anti-LGBTQ+, etc. If that number bumps up to 15% because you're being your authentic self, oh well. Us 85% still love you. If you ever forget that, just read how much the positive comments out number the negative ones.
Thank you Violette ❤
You call it sass, but to me it comes across as passion. Well done!
Thank you Stephanie! The video essay, where passion turns to sass 😅
Your comment about artists and paint etc. and sewists making art was a new point of view, but it's so relevant! It also raises the question who is criticising sewists for their sustainability, because I have never received backlash from non-sewing people . Has someone else? Or is the sewing community criticising each other? Because that would also be a whole other topic to unpack.
I definitely think it's an inter-community battle as you say, like the "not accurate enough" police in costuming, "not sustainable enough" is a rabbit hole with just as much depth for tearing others apart 😬
"Sometimes the things that we’re denying, that make us different, are exactly what are needed to move us to the next level" Danica Patrick xoxo
Thank you Bianca for being courageous and so eloquent! This needed to be said! There are some who just won't get it and will never get it. But there are some that needed this as a push into the direction we must head in - for the future of this planet.❣️❣️❣️💚💚💚 Sending best wishes and a huge congratulations from Down Under 💐🇦🇺😎
Thank you Rhonda! 💚
Thank you so much for clearing up some of my existential dread! To critically and thoughtfully navigate an issue that is rife with shaming, in a public forum, is gutsy as hell. Tackling fast fashion is one thing, but also taking on the ecological impact of natural fibers… Be still my nerdy little heart! As for delivery, I love that your personality didn’t dissolve into statistics. Even if I had disagreed with any of your points, I (like many millennials) have a fondness for dark humor and intelligent banter. Making this into an apology or rounding off the sharpness would have lessened its emotional appeal and overall impact. Personal opinion: holy crepe batman! Excellent work.
Thank you! ❤ I just can't be sorry for trying to make some art in this messed up world, there's a lot I could do to be more sustainable on an individual level, but not sewing isn't one of the big things just yet!
I loved this a lot. So beautifully done and eloquently explained and I agree with you almost entirely. But I also know that you're expressing strong opinions on a contentious issue. I think you need to prepare yourself for some hate comments and some general online reaction. IMO, it's worth it, but then it's not me on the receiving end! For the first half in particular, it felt like you were defensively arguing with someone who has accused you of unsustainability. I was thinking, if you'd like a practical suggestion if you like the idea, maybe start the whole video with a repeat of timestamp14.08 "Home apparel sewers are not the problem...disagree with me." It states the summary of your argument so that viewers know where you stand from the get-go. Just a thought.
Just popping back to say I'm SO GLAD it's being received so positively so far! I've got my fingers crossed that this will be the video that gets you recognised as you deserve to be 💜
You just took your channel to a new level. I think this presentation is solid and fierce, a definite reality check from someone who clearly knows her stuff and who cares. You don't come across as too sassy, frankly it's intimidating more than anything else. You've so clearly put a lot of effort into getting your facts in order and yet it's still compassionate, even with a bit of humour (granny's underpants, ha!) As a vegan, I really appreciate this content. These feelings are real. Perhaps this video may be too much for some folks who perhaps want to stay snuggled and cozy in vintage land, but even if they only watch a few minutes, they will be probed to think about things with a little more urgency and compassion. You are leaving your mark. Well done!
Thank you Penny ❤ I guess I let my sass bottle up from any time anyone commented "have you ever even thought about..." when indeed, as I went to university for fashion, I have thought about it all quite a bit yeah 😅
Absolutely well done. And something that needed to be said. The root cause of most of our problems is merchandising/advertising. It is also the solution. Organic natural fabrics like wool, cotton, silk and linen and hemp are healthier and will not destroy the environment down the line. If everyone gets on the bandwagon for natural well made items then maybe we can influence the world back to reasonable. Money has the loudest voice.
Thank you Cynthia ❤ I agree money speaks louder than words all too often
Yeeeeeessss! Thank you!
Not too sassy at all! These things need to be said and said loud enough for everyone in the back to hear. I appreciate that you point out how individuals can’t be expected to change our planet’s trajectory while the corporate polluters continue to dump massive amounts of plastic and other chemicals into our ecosystem. Keep speaking the truth, because I’m here for it!
Thank you Jaime! ❤
Sorry about the lipstick video incident. Another YouTuber I watch also did the same thing recently, where she didn't realize she had lipstick on her teeth until late in the video. I could totally relate! :) I don't find you too sassy or opinionated at all. I like hearing different opinions about topics like this, because, after all, if we all agreed with each other all the time, life would be very boring. I think it's great that you explain your view on this stuff. It's interesting to me to hear the thought process behind creators' creativity. :)
Thank you Mel ❤ You better bet I'll be triple checking my lipstick is only where it is supposed to be next time...
I think this is all really well stated. Well enough that I wouldn't be shocked if it spawns some "reaction" videos. I have my fingers crossed that the response on the wider internet is as good as it is here.
Also: love the use of B roll. I hope our patronage got you access to that!
This video was amazing. You obviously did you research and have a well founded argument. I love that you pointed out that the whole situation is nuanced and that there is no perfect way to be sustainable. We have to do the best we can within our means and continue to pressure the "big evil guys up the hill" to do their part to move toward sustainability. I can't wait to share this video!
Thank you Flynn ❤ I literally had to take classes and write papers on these kind of things in university, so when I sometimes will get comments in the "have you ever even thought about the..." I want to tear out my hair a little it's true 😅
Fantastic job with this one, B. Choosing to be mindful and the lesser of the evils in this world is a crucial part of global citizenship. You were clear and concise with your statements. I can't wait until this is published. I can't imagine that many people have put much thought or research into our impact vs the impact of large companies. Brava!
Thank you Josie ❤
I loved this. I feel it was worded very well! Great footage ;). You touch on many aspects. Definitely not too sassy. Honestly superb job. I'd love to share this information on my timeline. Much easier to have some one watch a very well put together video than to try to get them to understand what I'm talking about!
Thank you Tosha ❤
Beautifully eloquent and the perfect level of salty. *chef's kiss*
Thanks Heather!
I think you did an eloquent job and I love your sassy self! Just because we can't do everything doesn't mean we should do nothing. Real change means addressing things at a corporate level - making makers responsible (i.e. pay for) the hidden costs which is mostly the mess they make making their products. If you haven't checked it out, I suggest checking out Rebecca Burgess and her Fibershed out in California. She also has a book of the same name. The subtitle is "Growing a movement of farmers, fashion activists and makers for a new textile economy". She presents a different model, one that is more sustainable than our present model. As a side note - I'm with you on the thrift store home goods. The fabric used for tablecloths and curtains is atrocious. Of course if you find some vintage linens that are actually linen or cotton...well, I wouldn't pass those up. But modern goods, have you even tried to iron them? You can't get the creases out of them.
Thank you Lynn! I know all of my mom's table clothes are polyester so I have little faith in the current supply out there eek 😬 I'll look into Fibershed!
I didn't read any of this as defensive or villainous. It was certainly sassy and opinionated but I don't think that's something that an issue like this can go without. Fast fashion is something that needs to be spoken frankly about and I think you did a wonderful job in this video. The opening statement really puts things into perspective in a way most people are blind to. It's easy to walk through the world and stores without seeing, especially when companies are able to mislead consumers. The section about thrifted fabric felt more like a personal opinion statement rather than a direct condemnation of people who decide to thrift fabric. Personally, I've found that in everything you do, you're trying to teach. Someone who is just beginning, who is thinking of thrifting fabric (of a sort), would not have thought of the breathability or potential for pollution by washing fabric that wasn't made to be washed nearly as often as garments are. I think the editing of this video was really wonderful, I appreciate the step out into something new. As for the price, I think there are stock video subscription sites that might enable you to continue to branch out in this direction for a lower price. I've read good things about videvo and storyblocks. I've been working my way through your videos and noticed a pattern of you asking for reassurance on allowing this page to be more drafting and less full garment making. I'm relatively new here and so don't feel I can speak for all 426 of us, but I think the majority feel you should take time to sleep and write. I'm very impressed with your work ethic and I'm not sure there is much anyone can say to dissuade you from doing what you feel you ought. I would be really interested in seeing a video on how you plan your videos, how you edit, and maybe the process of designing a dress from start to (drafting)finish. I hope you're well, I hope your family is well, I wish you quality sleep, and a symptom free second vaccine, Janice
Thank you so much Janice! I did indeed subscribe to storyblocks for this video, but for video footage alone for one month it was $50 which is steep for me to spend on a video which will probably only make around that much over the next few months 😅 Thank you for supporting my endeavors to sleep and write in addition to my other work, I would love to spend more time doing both naturally, but indeed I pack my schedule a little too full for large amounts of either eek! Thanks for the well wishes, I wish them back to you ❤ I can report I had no side effects at all other than slight soreness of the arm which was a relief...especially as I had a lot of sewing scheduled to do the next day 😅
I liked this a lot. And no, not overly sassy - just impassioned and informed. You clearly outlined your options, choices and gave us info on how to make them for ourselves. And yes - it was "school" - in the best way.
Thank you Erin!
lol not even 10 secs in and i've had to rewind twice already! i loved your hate comment line to start the video! honestly you have a very level head on your shoulders so to speak, well obviously i only know you from your videos but i vote more sass! cuz really its you just telling it like it is you know.
Thank you Wendy! 😅 I don't let the true sass out often ha!
This is such a massive multi-layered topic and you address so many things in this video that I hardly know where to start with this comment! So I'm just going to say three things and then I'll go to bed: - Excellent video -- both content- and form-wise (really nice editing!). - Perhaps a little trite at this point, but it must be said: there's no 100% ethical consumption under capitalism. That doesn't mean we should just give up and shirk all responsibility. As you mention, we can each do a little bit, as much as our own individual circumstances allow. - I really dislike the idea of using thrifted bed sheets for mockups. Someone (who maybe can't afford to get new bedding) might still use those sheets for their intended purpose for years! We shouldn't just cut them up and bin them after one use.
Thank you Dee! The thrifting situation is just as (literally if not more ahhh?!?) layered and complex, as in some towns I'm sure most of the sheets go unbought and get thrown out which is a waste, and in other communities they may get bought up quick and used as you say. The same debate exists concerning all second hand goods, should "rich" people get to thrift shop at all, it's a very contentious topic as well! I have started working on a script..but we'll see if the video ever gets made, as it's even more of a divisive issue I fear!
I liked this......a lot. Serious thoughts, great editing and superb wit all in one video.
Thank you Rob!
This is a great video. I think you dealt with all of the nuances and contradictions of this issue in an honest and realistic way. The part about using home-decor fabrics for clothing struck a good balance between understanding why some people choose to go that route, but also explaining why you (quite justifiably) choose not to do that. It’s sassy, but we need more honest and realistic sass in the world.
Thank you Tina ❤ That was definitely the bit I was most worried about, as I would never want it to seem I was deriding any other sewers/creators!
I think that while you’re a little defensive there, it’s clear it comes from your actual awareness of the issues and the real wrestling and pondering you’ve done! And I think you do a great job of exposing the complexity of it all, the nuances, and explaining your choices clearly while not shaming others for their own choices. The sassiness is a bonus, obviously! Just to reassure you, I personally loved this. Well done, says I. Hope you get good comments. 🧡
Thank you Anatsuno! ❤
Yes! Preach! You put into words most eloquently all of my thoughts and feelings on this (and other) issues. Thank you for this video!
Thank you Anna ❤
