Really enjoying the variety of video themes lately! Thank you for the princess seam/dart video, always more to learn there. Love seeing your decorating projects too. Those stencils leave me in awe. And the color combinations are delicious. Now a random question: what kind of fabric scissors do you use? They look considerably more high powered than my good ole Fiskars, which have served me well, and after a series of other random brands I am thinking it's time to invest in something better. Also, do you sharpen them? And what are your thoughts on pinking shears (which I never see you use) versus just taking the time to go to the serger? Those French seams were lovely but the only time I take that much care is for something like linen... but I am rambling. The question was: recommended fabric shears?

T
The Closet Historian · July 24, 2026

Thank you Celia!! I use Guggenhein tailors shears, though annoyingly they do seem to be sold out currently https://www.guggenhein.com/ And I wish I could have them sharpened, I don't trust myself to do it seeing as I already nick myself enough just trying to do the dishes, it would be downright dangerous. Indeed I never use pinking shears. I just either am going to serge a raw edge, bind it, or line something, so they just don't have a use case for me!

Just want to pop in and show a youtube video where they really made some old oak floors look amazing. This can be done! Also, I've seen Oak stained to look more like walnut which might be something you'd like, or else another color? Just stumbled across a video about an upstate NY resident talking about the (mostly) pros & cons of living there. It looks so beautiful. And so affordable! Thought you would dig it. For what it's worth, even Christine McConnell complains about about upstate NY winters :D Love all the house updates you post in addition to the fab pattern drafting and fashion design. Pace yourself, take care of yourself, and share what/when/how you want and can. I'm writing this here because I am a new member of this patreon so not aware if there is another forum for questions/suggestions/requests for future topics to be covered. I recently watched your YouTube videos about different sleeves--mostly tulip sleeves, and then I watched the video about drafting the all-in-one bodice and so now I want to know if it's possible to do style lines on an all-in-one bodice sleeve area somehow!

Hi, I am so happy to have my basic bodice and skirt block. I have fabric and notions. I could now get started and make one of the beautiful things shown here on the channel. But I have a blocked feeling, I can't decide what to do. Anyone else have had that feeling?

S
Sandra Lü · May 19, 2024

What kind of block? Too scared to cut into a nice fabric that you love? No particular inspiration? For me it's sometimes a mixture and asking myself really helps. With the basic patterns I know it'll fit roughly (depending on fabric weight etc) and making a nice mockup as my goal helps overcome the fear of messing up with the nice fabric I bought. I always try to take one new element and slowly build garment by garment. I'm a perfectionist and giving myself permission to use my moms old stash of fabrics just to learn was a big help.

Just was thinking, how to unzip again, and since I've started knitting, I realized you could use a large (blunt) tapestry needle to reinsert that ribbon pretty easily with a modicum of flexibility. I shall remember this tip, and no longer avoid back zippered clothing, thanks!

Å
Åsa Åhlander · January 19, 2023

Hey Bianca! I just watched your old video on the purple diamond dress. And I couldn't help but notice the zipper was down. I remembered you mentioned in another video that it was because you were alone and didn't have anyone there to zip you up. I have a tip for you!😁 Feel free to share it on your channel if you like it. 😉 Thread a twine or string through the zipper hole and then you can use it to pull it up that last little bit. You know like they have on scuba suits. But when your all done you can just pull the string away, and none will ever now 😏 hope you find this helpful, I absolutely love your content ❤️

U
Ulla Umlaut · March 15, 2023

This trick, but with a tassel or other decorative element, is used by burlesque performers who have trouble getting a back zipper started opening. It works both ways and is a nice accent!

Are you going to do a Fantastic Beasts themed one at all? I know it's more late 1920s, early 1930s but I do think their costumes, particularly Leta LeStrange's, were really good

The cape was in Season 3, Ep 2, 8:46 seconds into the show, and the beret was on Season 4, Ep. 6, 1:18 seconds into show. Trust you'll want this info, I just spent the last 45 minutes looking thru all of the episodes to try and find these two. Not that the show isn't fabulous to watch. If you can show us how to make these two items, I would be forever greatful!!

Speaking of Ms. Maisel, I saw a grey plaid cape on the mother and a black lace beret with a black velvet ribbon around it with a bow that Ms. Maisel wore...TO DIE FOR!!! If you have any more tutorials, PLEASE show us how to make that one. I just thought it was so pretty.

Hi! Heads-up that the April 2020 video link isn't working :( It looks like it's linking to the internal 'youtube studio' version, so it's possible for a viewer (who's a creep like me...) to alter the url to find it, but probably worth fixing. :D

Hello Bianca, I have been subscribed to your YouTube channel under the user name @geriattrique and finally decided to become a patreon subscriber. I got rid of a lot of useless big company media subscriptions (two big ‘A’ companies) and opted to subscribe to more meaningful, individual user-created content. I have learned soooooo much during what you have coined the great-panini-of-2020-2021, from your channel, so thought this was a good additional subscription. I live in Toronto, Canada, and I currently practice printmaking at a public studio, in my city, outside of my boring paper-pushing day job. I also have a background in goldsmithing and metalwork but want to improve sewing skills. I love vintage clothes and am looking forward to more of your great videos! Hope you are keeping well!

T
The Closet Historian · May 25, 2021

Hello Louise! Thank you so much for your support ❤ Printmaking sound very fun, I have never tried it! I did try some metalworking in a high school jewelry class ages ago, which was one of the few more specific art classes my school offered oddly. I had a great time, but it was a bit odd they had jewelry making but not sewing 😅

Ann Lidslot · December 29, 2020

Hi Grace, I saw this today and I went with the address you posted and found that shop. Thank you so much for sharing it. I liked the garments a lot. I'm not as young as I used to be but I'm almost completely new to sewing. I seriously hated the textiles lessons that were mandatory in middle school and onwards until senior high. I'm not American or not anglo- anything really, so our education plans and requirements were a bit different. So as soon as we were allowed to choose if we wanted to take textile or wood shop, my choice was wood, as I hated that slightly less than I did textile. I was the first and only girl to make that choice, in that school. It was kind of nice though, because the teacher didn't know what to do with me, so he pretty much left me alone, with instructions to sandpaper something or other, while he and the boys were getting into how to use power tools and things. I was, and is, a bit of a "daydreamer" so I was pretty content with that arrangement. This has now changed through the inspiration of our wonderful protegee, and early summer I decided to buy a senior sewing machine, and try to learn how to use it. I got a green Husqvarna Automatic from around the same time as Bianca's Singer, and I adore it. It just does what I ask of it and I've decided to view the seam ripper as my friend, much like I view the spell check on the computer, you know. it's a bit tedious but great for the outcome of the task I'm trying to accomplish. I must have missed the discussion about blocks. Do you know where that was, because I really liked all of the patterns I looked at in the Etsy shop you referred to. It seems like you mean to use this dress to make your block. I'm far from being at that level yet, but it would be very interesting to know about the technique, even so. If you’d want to, I would be so grateful for anything you could do to explain the process. Thank you so much for referring to that shop. I have been thinking about trying to make a pair of drawstring trousers, and this shop has a pair that I think is nicer than the one I was planning to try, but on the same level of difficulty. I'm just waiting for the fabric I've bought to get here, even though 2020. A dark navy double gauze, and I have no idea if that is an easy enough fabric for me to work with. I have no idea what the fabric is like. I haven’t been in any fabric stores as it’s 2020, and I have underlying conditions. It’s very exciting. While I wait I'm very interested in the block creation discussion if it can be found. Happy New Year, and let's hope of a better year than the current one. Yours, Ann

Grace Balzer · January 12, 2021

Bianca uses her block sloper in almost all her videos, that is what inspired me. I’m pretty new at this, but every dress or top I’ve ever made does not quite fit. I have a short torso and broad shoulders. I just made up the pattern as close to my size as I could then I tried it on. There were lots of issues but I took them one at a time. Though it fit my waist there was lots of space up top. There were a few changes I needed to make there. That changed the armhole. I then noticed that my apex was much lower on the pattern. I just went with it and changed the darts. Last there was a huge gap at my neck in the back. I tried everything but ended up having the add darts. Once I sewed it all up, like three times, making changes every time, it fits me. I tried leaving the darts back shoulder darts sewed and redrawing the pattern. It worked. I inherited a Singer very similar to Bianca’s, and it is what I learned to sew on years ago. I have had issues with it, but was able to get it to work today. I’m excited to take my new pattern for a drive with my Singer. I found 30 year old fabric in a box in my parents’ basement. It just so happens to be the same fabric that my mom made a blanket for me all those years ago. Now I am going to make a dress out of it with my grandmother’s sewing machine.
