A Mini Thrift Haul of Some Rather Mini Antiques
I was trying to think of ways to make the construction portions of my sewing videos prettier in an effort to make things as aesthetically pleasing as possible, and I had a thought about pin dishes!
Hear me out, I could use different cute trays/dishes that coordinate with each project in some way? I know this is a tiny odd detail to add, but anything I can do to try and make the videos even nicer to watch seems sorta fair game right? I can't afford to get a new patterning table of doom, or prettier cabinetry or tile or whatever down here in the sewing room (also, it's not my house...as we know ha) but I can control some visual aspects of the shot of course.
I hadn't been out thrifting since February, but I knew little trinket dishes and such were going to be SO inexpensive at the thrift shop, so today I allowed myself a very quick (think Supermarket Sweep level power shopping) double-layer-masked up dash around my favorite local thrift store. I picked up a few of these dishes, the crystal tray, the larger of the two tarnished silver shells, the ivory saucer and the violet covered bowl/dish vanity box. I also picked up this crescent shaped black and white toile dish (which I think are for fish bones in a proper place setting??) marked Clarice Cliff on Etsy this week too. I've no idea if it's really from their manufacture, as it's not really her style, but it is cute. The smaller silver shell with the little curled handle was another super inexpensive Etsy find. I think these will all make such cute pin dishes! Especially the tarnished silver ones for being in frame for the Victorian project.
Tell me if I'm just mad?!? Now instead of just doing set dressing out on set, I'm practically doing set dressing the workroom too, forgive me!
I also found a Laura Ashley Edwardian style blouse with pretty cotton lace along the collar, but I'll save that for a future thrift haul when I can model it. I just whipped past a few clothing aisles on my way to the check out today. I really have been so good about not leaving the house this year. I hadn't been in any store at all in probably a month, but the heathen thrifting gods call, and I am weak weak weak.
I hope you are well and staying safe! I have thoroughly washed all these dishes and also everything else I touched today I assure you, can't be too careful anymore. I'm going to get back to editing a few more chapters now, but I'll be back soon with more sneak peeks at the Victorian project!

These are beautiful! What a great idea. I love pretty dishes. I’ve been wanting a cute tea set just for funnies.
I am declaring that you may never get rid of 'The Blue Patterning Table of Doom'!!! That table is a trademark of yours, in fact, you should trademark that phrase. It's not expensive at all and then no one else can use it, or if the do, they can pay you royalties. I love the dishes and I do have some true crystal dishes you could have for free if you want. I don't entertain much anymore so I don't need them. They are small, about 3" across and they were used as after dinner ashtrays. I think the desk that you sit in front of is perfect for a visual with lit candles. Victorian homes were cluttered with many trinkets and dishes, candles, and flowery fabrics. You could cover the ironing board with a flowered fabric if you wanted, that wouldn't be very expensive, or stencil some flowers onto muslin fabric and use it in some way. The important thing is for you to be you. Costuming Drama doesn't use fancy anything, Bernadette uses lighting/music as her niche, Katerina (?) uses a plain room for her videos most of the time, or goes outside. Somethings I have noticed are dressforms, both professional and the JoAnn's adjustable ones sitting somewhere in the room. You don't seem to be a 'froo froo' woman to me, so don't change who you are. I think your channel just needs to be more widely seen and once people see it and you, they will subscribe. Try sending requests to other people who are into 40s, 50s, dress and ask if they would take a look at your channel and then promote it. That is how many got more subscribers to their channels. You are beautiful, sincere, talented and have a great sense of humor. Do you think that about you? It's true! You Go Girl!!
Trinket dishes...let me tell you about my....how shall I say... collection...each room, surface has been dished in a myriad of little pretty useful dishes. My mum taught me well xxx
Clarice Cliff did transferware as well. That's definitely one of hers. The black and white crescent dish you found would be a side plate for an individual place setting for vegetables or salad.
I will be so sad the day the blue patterning table of doom disappears from your videos! :) :) Love those little pin dishes. Such a cute way to display something practical! Omg, yes, Laura Ashley 80s blouses are the retro bomb. I have a few myself, and they work very well for vintage-inspired outfits. I grew up in the 80s & I’m pretty sure I had some of that Laura Ashley stuff back in the day. What was once old is new again! :) :)
I like the blue patterning table of doom, it's got character but it's also nice to have aesthetically pleasing pin dishes laying about.
What a cute idea! And curating what you present in video form is just a good professional standard. Think a store display to sell stuff. You are selling your whole activity and persona. The makeover of your work space is good for you mentally and very good for the channel presentation. Win win! I can hardly WAIT for the Victorian project!!!! I think I like the silver ones best. I wonder - do you keep a large magnet around to pick up extra pins? I use magnets to find out if my jewelry might be sterling/gold or not. The magnet I use? It is a gift from a friend- a finger puppet magnet of Frida Kahlo
Hard same on thrifting temptation!
