Making A Colorful Rayon Crepe 1940's Style Dress

Well, I didn't get to make this dress with the exact design planned, but that just means we get to make that first style of skirt drape some other time! I am currently on a quest to figure out where I can get rayon crepe fabrics like this one but in solid colors, so that I can demonstrate design details better without things getting lost in pretty prints. If anyone has a lead on good places to purchase rayon crepe fabrics let me know!

Looks gorgeous! Love the top-down camera angle. Yes, I'd like to see the 'extra' bits that don't usually film. I'm certain they will help my sewing as a beginner. These are the things we don't get to see. Love the iridescent blouse in the intro and outro - and the whole look - including your bee broach. Would those 'kimono' sleeves be called dolman sleeves? I agree with you, a more appropriate name would be better. Take care, look after yourself and best wishes from Down Under <3

Thank you Rhonda! Google result for the difference says "Like the kimono sleeve, the dolman sleeve is drafted with the bodice and is very wide at the top. The difference, though, is that the dolman sleeve slowly tapers as it moves toward the wrist." So I guess at a very short length they would be very very similar looking!

I saw a bunch of solid rayon crepe on fashion fabrics club. I haven't purchased it myself, so I am not sure how the quality compares.

I'll have to order some to try! I have tried the crepe from Stylish Fabric on Etsy, who also have several colors available, but it's tissue thin and not what I was after. Thank you for letting me know!

New camera apparatus is awesome! I would love to see a video of the 'extra' bits you don't usually film :)

I thought the overhead rig was fantastic and is perfect to use in conjunction with how you were filming it. I loved this dress, well I love all the outfits you make! I actually really like the idea of a video of all the little jobs that you usually do off camera. I’ve been sewing most of my life but never made clothes and that is what I now want to do so all your tips and tricks are so helpful.

Thank you Carol Ann! I'm trying to be good and include them more from now on like I did for the pencil skirt sewing video on the channel, hopefully I can stick with it ha!

I definitely like the rig set up but it's a little hard to see the lines and writing. I think if you switched to sharpie or something similarly bold, it might help. I also am trying to avoid Joann's! So upset with their covid response plus I've never felt their fabrics were all that great in quality. Do you save the modified patterns or do you start from a fresh block for everything you sew?

T

Thanks Katie! I always save my modified patterns. Usually I reuse my patterns all the time, but I always start from base patterns when doing a video demonstration :)

I know you generally dont to do "reproductions" but it would be fun to see you take a New Look dress from photograph and then pattern and make it for yourself. I would also love to see a 1950s take on the already sort of retro feel of the Roland Mouret galaxy dress.-- Also you can find great deals on point press/clapers on ebay. I just picked one up there for like 25 including shipping.

Which sort of New Look dress did you have in mind? When I think New Look the Bar Suit always comes to mind first, which would be awesome to have, but I am not worth/capable of tailoring something that awesome I fear ha!

The new camera rig (totally rpoud of your resourcefulness there) was a great idea as now you can use both of your hands!

Thanks Clara! It was so nice to not have to stop what I was doing to film each step and just going along instead knowing I can do the voice over afterwards :)

The new top down camera rig is AWESOME! Really clear and I loved seeing you make the changes in real time. It seems so fast and easy. Just whack the ruler down, draw a new line. Boom. :D

Thank you Emma! It does go really fast so I'm glad this set up captures that better :)
