Dispatch no. 5 - Updates Podcast (read post first?)

I just wanted to disclaim that this podcast is a very honest sort of check in from me, and involves me discussing my own fears, covid-19, insecurities, and a short section on what I have been reading this week, White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo.

I wanted to note this firstly because some of you may not want to listen to more fear and such right now, which I would totally understand, but also because I wanted to note that I am aware of the controversy surrounding the book White Fragility, and I think it's important to be aware of the discourse surrounding the work and its author. The article "The Dehumanizing Condescension of White Fragility" ( https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/07/dehumanizing-condescension-white-fragility/614146/ ) is just one of several critiques that examine the book. It certainly is not the only book concerning anti-racism on my to-be-read stack right now, and as always, I think it's important to read widely and investigate subjects and authors broadly as well.

So, in short, this episode might be a little heavy. These podcasts are supposed to be like audio updates to a friend, and my long suffering best friend has had to put up with me being scared a lot lately too. Again, I will totally understand if you want to skip this one!

I took my time to listen to this one and I've never had someone articulate the self image stuff like you did and I found it super helpful (32min-ish). Re: IG, I only got onto it to flood my experience with #fatfemmes and it was a game changer, now costuming as well.

Roughly 28 minutes..... in all seriousness if you take custom sewing orders I'd so pay for a1940s suit.

The nonfiction books I've been reading lately are "The Cooking Gene: a Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South" by Michael W. Twitty and "Something from the Oven: Reinventing Dinner in 1950s America" by Laura Shapiro (because I'm only a little obsessed with foodways and food history). As well as "The Sawbones Book" by Justin and Sydnee McElroy (because if I have to live during a plague, might as well do it with a medical history book with a Choose Your Own Cholera adventure section). As far as fiction books go, I'm still waiting on my pre-ordered copy of Lindsay Ellis's novel, "Axiom's End" to arrive.

I have only just begun to even learn to actually cook from making the meals for my parents Hello Fresh subscription, but I would love to improve my skills someday when I'm fully in charge of my menus ;) Food history is certainly interesting! I know it's odd, but I have never investigated the McElroy's works despite being a very fandom adjacent Vlogbrothers fan. I'm interested to see how Ellis's novel launch goes as an aspiring author, and will try and pick up her book in my next round of book buying later in the year. Right now I'm about to start Hank Green's A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor instead for my YouTuber penned science fiction fix

I'm grateful for your honesty, Bianca. I'm grateful for your work here on the internet (and the things that aren't work). I'm grateful for your presence in my life all together, as small and as it is.

Thank you so much Chae ❤

I completely empathize with your fears, especially those surrounding getting sick. I am at high risk because of an autoimmune disease and I'm living in one of the big hotspots. I spent four days in the hospital last month because the medication I was taking to keep me in remission tried to shut my liver and pancreas down. (I've made a full recovery.) But now I live un-medicated, in fear of not only the virus, but also the fact that my body could stop being able to digest food at any moment. I'm sure the stress isn't helping.

I'm so glad to hear you made a full recovery even in this scary time. It is such a stressful enviroment in general, and other health worries certainly do not help in that realm. I hope your body can stay strong during this truly absurdly wild time ❤

I very much appreciate and admire your honesty in these podcasts(and also, your Side Husselen series). I identify personally with a lot of what you say in this episode. I can only hope that all the bad is a precursor to something better.

Thank you Lacey ❤ Yes we must maintain hope that there is radical change coming after the storm.

sorry forget no hitting return - an Aussie on YouTube has started selling her patterns if you can cope with the accent her Chanel is “Rosery Apparel” she may have some ideas that could be adapted. Did I ever mention you have a very nice speaking voice.

T
The Closet Historian · July 17, 2020

Thank you Kaye! It's funny because I get comments on Youtube both from people who say they like my voice, and from others who say they really hate it! Like all things, it is subjective I suppose. Who wouldn't like listening to an Aussie accent though! :) I have checked out her videos and her aesthetic and branding is super cute. I'm afraid I need some more of the nitty gritty info though, like how to get the patterns actually into the software and how to get them sized properly, the packaging at the end is the most fun part! I look forward to the branding side of things as I enjoy it, it's the grading, testing, technical math-ish stuff I'm avoiding because it's less pretty ha

As a person who lives in a glass house I should just shut up but the western world seems short on leadership. Our neighbours in New Zealand have a strong sensible leader ( Jacinta Ardern ) she seems to be able to act with compassion when tackling serious problems.

A small, weird comment, but it just really jumped out at me the way you hesitated describing your experiences as "anxiety". That definitely sounds like what it is to me. Everyone experiences some amount of anxiety from time to time even if they don't have an anxiety disorder. I'd hate to think someone's made you cautious of describing your own valid experiences. It obviously doesn't make me any kind of qualified expert, but let's just say as someone with a GAD diagnosis I identify /very/ strongly with how you've described your "stress". I hope I'm not reading into things too much, it just struck me that you felt the need to make that caveat or downplay your experiences.

T
The Closet Historian · July 17, 2020

Thank you for your comment Michaela ❤ I do suspect I struggle with some level of general anxiety, but as I haven't been in to discuss things with a professional yet I hesitate to call it by it's name I suppose. I was seeing a post go around on instagram just last night about "are you gaslighting yourself?" mentioning things like minimizing your own struggles and saying to oneself "I am not sick enough to be diagnosed..." sort of thing and it certainly had me thinking. Thank you for your message, I certainly hope I can force myself into seeking some help in this area once it's safer to do the whole appointments and meeting people thing again! ❤
