Early Access // Monday's Video

Once again the edit took longer than I had hoped and a video got pushed from Thursday to Monday...cest la vie.

Inside baseball: I ended up re-filming the drafting clips for the front bodice of this dress and re-editing it during the making of this video because I wanted to redo things using a better order of operations. Sometimes I draft too dangerously, and I wanted to achieve more clarity and make the demonstration more easily understood for the video.

I'm also working on getting the skirt video from last month's Gunny Sax project up for you shortly! Then it's back to sewing for this month's project ✨

Have you seen Agatha Christie ABC murder from a few years ago. Episode 1. Betty unfortunately dies but wears a fabulous dress to do it in. Here's the best picture i could find. https://share.google/IprIQhppuo0mbEAeD

I don't have a pattern number, but this top from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries lives in my head rent free (apologies for more floopy fabric suggestions) https://pin.it/sfIvwFp6U You've done the cowl neck already, but maybe the cowl (?) sleeve is new?

Speaking of macabre or otherworldly florals, have you seen the flowers on a native passion vine? I think they are the prettiest flowers in a "this was imported from a poisonous alien planet" kind of way. Best vine option, in my opinion. Plus! Free passion fruit!

This is fantastic!! Definitely picked up a few tricks (and some hug snug) for a near future and first rayon project. Always learn something new, and appreciate the editing in the YT version as far as order of operations. Re-watch videos all the time trying to make sure not to skip a step and avoid the frustration that ensues. Would have to search through your archives of videos on how to create the top of this dress since I feel like I've seen you make a wrap dress before, but have some across this german pattern magazine on Pinterest and Etsy, which features a wrap front with diagonal darts bodice and nifty little skirt pinwheel accents/floops that appear to span over 2 skirt panels, on perhaps a 6-panel skirt that would be so fun to see how it could be recreated. There is a pattern tracing of it on Etsy, but would be great to see the pattern manipulation to get to this for individual sizes instead of just the original magazine size. https://pin.it/443OhLrDC https://www.etsy.com/listing/826014518/vintage-88cm34-bust-size-1950s-34-sleeve Appreciate you being you!

"C'est la vie." Exactly! That's the spirit! Thanks for showing this advanced style, I learned a lot!

I saw the most amazing idea for finishing curved facings the other day - sew the interfacing wrong side to fabric right side, clip, then turn over and press the interfacing down to the wrong side of fabric! Genius idea! I haven’t tried it yet tho.

Per your comment about not growing daisies or echinacea because they're too cheerful (100% agree), I was recently given a really lovely book you might enjoy: The Goth Garden: The Mystery, Beauty, and Lore of Dark Gardening by Felicia Feaster. I love the dress, and it's nice to know I'm not the only one who constantly pats squirmy fabric!

How did you know that I’ve been looking for this design for months now? I’ve made a few of Gertie’s society dresses, which is close, but not quite the same and I wanted a choice that wasn’t a knit. I’m so happy.

Thank you Jennifer! It's become a classic for a reason I suppose!

Thanks for walking us through sewing floopy rayon. You make it look so easy, and this dress looks superb on you. Brava! You deserve gelato!

T
The Closet Historian · July 26, 2026

Thank you Eve! We all need a little gelato to survive summer

Simplicity 3512 would be nice for more on contouring.

I have never made a strapless garment, so it would certainly be outside my wheelhouse! Torso blocks (no waist seam) are coming up net on Drafting Dangerous though ✨

Just a few minutes on and I can already tell I want to make just a basic block dress again before I attempt this one. I have had some weight changes lately I need at account for.
