Dispatch no. 68 - Updates Podcast

Hello from within the snowstorm, where flakes are gently falling outside atop last night's accumulation and it's a bright partly sunny 17 degrees (that's -8 for you Celsius folks). Luckily I've got snacks and the cats to keep me cozy, but if you are snowed in bored somewhere, or not, may I recommend rewatching Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix? Because I did this weekend and goodness that second season they're busy making just cannot come out soon enough. I might have to watch House of Five Leaves again now to help fill the void...

Chocolate chip cookie recipe I mentioned/used: https://joyfoodsunshine.com/the-most-amazing-chocolate-chip-cookies/

I like it when you go deep about your writing and existing, creating, adjusting to the changing times. I also like how cheerful the black paint makes you! Cozy, dark, I hear you. I grew up in a cedar house, inside and outside, rich, dark brown, reddish logs with knots and lines in them. So pretty, except that oh my, did that wood ever conduct the sound of my piano practicing. People halfway down the street could hear Chopin Scherzos! Keep on being you, You are so appreciated and yes, goodness knows, I don't think it's ever entirely possible for the consumer to completely see/hear things the way the creator envisions them. A puzzle that only fuels more creativity, I suppose. Take care, Bianca!

Thank you Penny! I hope the house at least occasionally smelled of cedar too, I love the smell of cedar ❤ It must have been a bit like playing piano inside a giant guitar!

Binging on "Stranger Things," season four here, and working on reproduction vintage aprons. Cabin fever hasn't set in yet but since it won't get up to freezing here all next week it's just a matter of time.

Love a good repro apron!

You could self publish on Kindle and Audible - I would be happy to do the reading if you don't mind a non US voice.

I'm gonna try for the "real" thing with finding a literary agent first, but maybe one day if that never works out!

As someone with generalised anxiety and audhd, I think part of what causes the "I'm a burden, why am I so useless" feelings come from our modern society telling us we need to have certain things and do certain things to be "successful" and accomplished and not burdensome. I do think the capitalist world is definitely not a healthy place to exist unfortunately 🫤 Just know that you and what you create help make life worth living for some of us 💜 Loves and strength to you and your kitties from me and my 3 kitties 🥰

T
The Closet Historian · February 28, 2026

Thank you ❤ Yes the internalized capitalist mindset is a poison to all of us, a total drag indeed! Boop those kitty noses for me

As someone who also writes on the side of a completely different full-time job, (knowing nod) I get it...

I love watching your old thrifting haul videos so a dedicated antiquing + haul video would be most welcome (as opposed to just filming a bit of it for B roll! Although that would be most welcome too. I adore watching anything you create).

C
Celia · January 30, 2026

I'd love that too but wait until it's safe to get around outside before you go on a thrifting expedition. We don't want you to slip and fall or get stuck in a snowbank!

If you like peanut butter, give these a go. I love them and they don’t last, one isn’t enough. The recipe is in UK measurements. Thanks for a lovely podcast touching on so many things. I agree about doing what we can to build and retain hope, humanity and compassion It can seem so overwhelming, what’s going on in the wider world, but doing what you can, the best you can, helps so much. I ration my consumption of news media as it just gets too much at times and seek refuge in sewing, knitting and snuggle time with my doggie. https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/double-choc-peanut-butter-cookies

Thank you Craig! These cookies sound most excellent!!

May sound weird but hearing you ramble is just so fun when I'm at work doing boring stuff. No matter what it is you're talking about

Ivy Bombshell · January 27, 2026

I'm glad you're taking care and staying warm during the bad weather/apocalypse. My next room to tackle decorating is my bathroom. Some genius decided to first cover the completely tiled room in thick white gloss paint, then cover them in THOSE vinyl stick on tiles. I have a long road ahead of scraping them and all the grot off before I can paint them a lovely dark green, then replace the knee height sink.

T
The Closet Historian · February 28, 2026

Ooof that is an annoying layer job for sure. At least the paint underneath might partially come off with the adhesive backing?!? I fear all peel and stick tiles after chiseling them off my floor 😩

C
Chae Howard · January 27, 2026

Please stay safe and stay warm 💚 it's scary out there and we should be kind to ourselves and others

My bathroom has gone through so much since we've lived here. We moved in to an original 1950s pink tile bathroom with pink painted walls and ceiling with white fixtures and the worst sink vanity you've ever seen. BUT THEN the soap dish fell out of the wall (!!) to reveal so much black mold (!!!!!) There's a window right above the soap dish in the shower/tub and the shower had soaked through the wooden trim for who knows how long. We had to rip out that whole wall to mitigate the mold. And since we didn't have the time, money or resources to try to color match replacement pink tiles in the only bathroom, we retired the room with white subway tiles (it was 2017, please forgive me). Later I added (Roommates RMK11433WP) green lily pad on black peel and stick vinyl wallpaper (the best type for bathrooms imo) and outside of one measuring mistake and then having to piece some hidden areas before redoing it, it looks great and no more mold. But now! We are having plumbing issues with the sink (original cast iron pipes) and will have to rip out the tiles behind the sink to fix it. So we are replacing all the tile again! This time, I sourced blush pink and sage green 1950s tile from FB Marketplace (all for free!!!). They look great with the wallpaper and the pink bathroom will be reborn! Not the same pink, but better than white subway tiles. No more white or gray in my house!

T
The Closet Historian · February 28, 2026

Free tile is the best price!! What a score of an upgrade. My own pink floor tiles in my bathroom just decided to randomly start popping up in a fractured line down the middle of the room recently (wow, thanks, could they maybe...not right now!!) so it looks like I will be replacing the floor in there this year whether I planned to or not 😅

Something shaped like a Christmas tree skirt would work for the orb lamp table

T
The Closet Historian · February 28, 2026

Exactly, I need a mini tree skirt!

M
Melissa Elphinstone · January 27, 2026

You could make a circle skirt with snaps at the back for the lamp table?

T
The Closet Historian · February 28, 2026

Essentially yes, a lamp skirt 😂

Lauren Wright · January 27, 2026

You reminded me of how I used to hope that the line in the hotel lobby of the Tower of Terror ride would go as slowly as possible so that I could savor every little detail. I really didn’t care for the actual ride, but having to be brave for the big drops was the price of seeing the cobwebs and decaying grandeur of the entry.

T
The Closet Historian · February 28, 2026

I love the lobby background music while I'm sewing or painting, it's on youtube!

Debra S. Apostol · January 26, 2026

I used to live in a house that HAD a bathroom with pink (think PeptoBismal) fixtures, pink and grey (gray??) tiles, with maroon ‘border’ tiles!! I will say, while it was very ‘dated’ … it was in prisTINE condition and the color scheme went together very well … unless of course you happened to be sick - then it could be a bit nauseating … LOL!

T
The Closet Historian · February 28, 2026

Sounds very 1930s-ish!! I would keep it for sure, that's a conversation piece 😂 There is a 1920s mansion in my old neighborhood in Colorado that had a yellow and blue very Rococo themed tiled bathroom, and a orchid purple tiled bathroom with all the matching fixtures, bathrooms used to be soooo colorful ha!

We are digging out of snow here in southern Ontario. I hope you did not have too much to shovel. I am glad you have slowed down a bit, or maybe I am trying to find a way to feel better for not being so productive. 😂

As someone who came to Canada from a country torn apart by civil war, I am feeling dread when I look at what is going on in the US. In order to deal with it, about 10 days ago I decided to make knit bodice block and I am on my fourth top now. Two of those are asymetric stretchy tops from one of your videos. They turned out lovely and I am so happy with them. I am also working on pants block by copying my favourite pants. I thought the pants would be easier but apparently not.

Thank you for this much needed distraction and your warm cozy comfort ❤️ I am really enjoying your writing. Your characters are understandable and likeable. Your story is engaging, sometimes when my mind wanders I find it with your characters. I look forward to reading all your books
