Behind the Seams and Cats

Just a quick note to say I've been working away on this month's Patreon video project, but of course I chose to make an intricate color blocked (updated version of my original Blade Runner inspired) dress so...it's gonna be down to the wire! I eliminated the side seams on the bodice and did beetle-inspired-tail-coat style lines on the skirt 😅 Tomorrow I'll have to take a pause on sewing the rather anxiety inducing sleeves to finish editing this week's channel video instead though, in which I will be making some curtains!

Are these curtains? Valences I guess. Decorative drapery nonsense with tassels! The pink and red closet deserved a final flourish. Once day I'll even find the perfect rug for in there too.

Thank you for your patience and support. I'll have the Patreon exclusive project and the updates podcast both up here for you soon!

And yes the cats have been very 'helpful'

The valences turned out beautifully and I enjoyed seeing the trim transform your little chair into something very fancy and custom. It has been very enjoyable to watch your home decor ideas come to life.

Thank you Lauren! Now if I could only get my cat Xander to be a little less interested in the chair tassels...

Very nice! I would call those swag and tail pelmets. I made a few back in the day! The swag bit looks similar to the Austrian blinds that were all the rage in the UK in the 1980s - but they drew up like a roman blind. Some people did call them valances so you're not wrong. I think now its more used as a term for the gathered bit to hide a bed base though. Looking forward to seeing the updated blade runner dress- although the original is still one of my favourites 🤍

Thank you Peta! I have never heard the term valance used for a bed skirt, which is what the bed drape thingy is called here in the US! This is good to know 😂

Chairs are meant to have cat hair all over them. That's why it's called furniture.

T
The Closet Historian · June 4, 2025

Excellent! Though the amount of fur on my rugs is also out of control 😅

Beautiful. Here in the UK your window treatment would be called a pelmet, or pelmets. A valance is a drape to cover the base of a bed - i.e underneath the mattress to the floor on 3 sides of the bed - UK anyway; seems to be a different form of language in the US!!

T
The Closet Historian · June 4, 2025

Thank you Marie! Yes in the US the bed base drape thingy is called a 'bed skirt' instead. I like the word pelmet better anyway 😂

Gorgeous kittenish helpers! (Have one of those… supervisor extrordinaire!) And lovely draperies!! Delicious! I missed commenting on the visit to the Vanderbilts! But thank you for sharing… vicarious visual pleasure appreciated! BEST wishes, Bianca and don’t stress! It is always worth the wait. ❤️✨

T
The Closet Historian · June 4, 2025

Thank you Lynne! Those darn Vanderbuilt's didn't let me take any of their tapestries home with me, so disappointing 😍

T
Tammy Meier · May 28, 2025

curious, why the line thru the face on your sketches?

T
The Closet Historian · June 4, 2025

There is no real reason, many designers do it as a shorthand for the eyeline of a fashion figure, called a croquis. I've just done it since fashion school ✨

Tammy Meier · May 28, 2025

It's so beautiful.

The Closet Historian · June 4, 2025

Thank you Tammy!

I forgot to say, I love the beetle things on the skirt back! I will enjoy seeing how that is done.

Wow! that is some tassel! That big central one. I love tassels. I just want you to know that I am beginning to decorate my sewing room. It's all thanks to you. I've been told that decorating your space is a healthy thing to do. I have just never understood what it is to decorate my space. Your decorating journey has some how made it easy for me to actually do that too. It must be in the way you explain things. I understand concepts when you explain them. So, a great big thank you! I love my new sewing space!

T
The Closet Historian · June 4, 2025

Thank you Julie! I love a giant tassel, and luckily this one is far enough from the kitties to stay pristine 😂 Decorate away! It is my favorite thing ever, if only I had a Vanderbuilt budget to play with ha

My cat Oliver has decided to “help” with my sewing by biting chunks out of my pattern pieces 😼 I hope your Oliver and friends don’t learn that trick!

The Closet Historian · June 4, 2025

I get more of the several claw hole punch of approval method ✨

DDN, it's a thing I didn't know I needed. Until I did 😍 Cats are slackers, honestly. Except when they're being pattern weights 😉

Lynn Olsen · May 28, 2025

Loved this entire journey you've been on! And that now we have consistent bonus cat cameos

T
The Closet Historian · June 4, 2025

Thank you Lynn! The cats are very insistent about helping

I’ll look forward to seeing your decorative drapery nonsense, it might inspire me to do some of my own.

Sandra Lü · May 28, 2025

The blade runner dress or rather the "realtor in tomorrowland" inspired me to do my own version last winter. I followed the brain-fart to put piping (first time user...) between te blockings... so much work! I havent worn it since, it seems too much for me, too much visual weight, even after taking off the sleeves... *sigh* hoping to built that confidence to match my designs, looking forward to your video!

T
The Closet Historian · June 4, 2025

Thank you Sandra! I find piping very intimidating for some reason, I need to learn to do it someday!

Jo Jo's Got Sewjo · May 28, 2025

Ooooh pretty drapey things! And eliminating side seams?! What magic is this?

A
Amie Hamilton · May 28, 2025

That dress looks amazing! More than worth the wait so please don't stress too much... I am enjoying watching the material from your new house so much. I love seeing you in a place where you wanted to be after working so hard to get there. Please don't feel so stressed by deadlines that you can't enjoy your time in your new house xx

T
The Closet Historian · June 4, 2025

Thank you Amie ❤ I guess I sorta feel I don't 'deserve' the house unless I'm working myself a little raw, which is a conversation for a professional sometime I'm sure 😅
