Dispatch no. 53 - Updates Podcast
Disappear into the cowboy game once the work day is done. Prices in 1899 seem more reasonable.
"I hope it's hot and terrible Mrs Downes, otherwise I'll feel I've been sold a false bill of goods"
I mean come on, that's the good stuff.

I was kicked out of my home in Littleton, CO when I was 16. My father was an abusive A**H***. I ended up getting married to a great man and lived in the Philly area. My husband passed away in 2006. I reconnected with my boyfriend from Littleton. He now lives in Texas. I moved in with him in 2009. I have 4 kids, and I had problems with them being happy for me. My oldest just wanted me to be happy, my other three held some resentment about me leaving home. So I kind of did the oppisete of kids leaving home so I do understand what your going thru.
It's your life. Go live it.
Lady Bianca, I moved out at 23. I stayed in same horrible small town as my parents (whom I loved dearly) cuz mom ended up needing dialysis. I totally get your being pulled from everywhere. If the resentment is from your parents/brother (I hope not), they'll get over it. They love you. It'll be okay. I'm 60 now & it's too late for me to go anywhere else. Don't be me. Don't stay to please anyone else
As someone who as lived on both the west and east coast (including in Colorado!), I hope you find as much joy in the Appalachian mountains as you do in the Rockies. It’s a much different vibe, but so so beautiful.
Putting out those good vibes for home and community for you!! Transitions are SO hard. It’s definitely normal to actually feel terrible even though it seems like it should be exciting, which is inherently quite confusing! I bet once you check out some cities and find one that feels right everything else will fall into place 💜 I find all your videos so soothing and beautiful to watch, but I confess the tutorials are my favourite! I’ve learned so much from you! Excited for more cataloguing catalogs as well-love those! Thank you for these musings-it always feels like catching up with a friend (my little corner of the world gets pretty lonely too sometimes) so it’s nice to know there are other creative sewists/western video game enthusiasts out there!! Enjoy your upcoming adventures💜
I share your house hunting anxiety. My fiance and I are looking to move next year and it is kind of a nightmare. Also, your videos are a large part of why I feel confident enough to make my wedding dress, so thank you so much for sharing your skill and knowledge with us!
The darts video is how I found your channel and it was very helpful.
Thank you thank you thank you for recognizing the truth about the lookbooks. I hope your talents will shine in other directions and look forward to seeing what comes next.
I also will absolutely hide under the bed with my cats when strangers come over
Have you seen Shannon Makes on YT? I started watching for her sewing content, but last summer she bought a cheap old Victorian duplex in Nova Scotia in dire need of intervention and pivoted to doing reno videos. Hers was originally built as a mirrored duplex, with a wall running down the middle - she intends to live in one half and rent the other. A "multi-family" Victorian of that style might not be on your radar, but within your price range (and overlooked by other buyers). Just a thought if you are not finding what you want in your price range.
Bianca, I thank you for this podcast of your thoughts! It's ok that you feel pulled in different directions right now...because you are! It's ok if you have to pull back a little from some things on YouTube. That is why Patreon is so amazing...I know we can all keep you afloat no matter what the algorithm is doing or if I myself go through a busy spate where I am not able to watch for awhile. Hang in there! I am excited for your house search! What an adventure! You will find something that suits your needs! The world is full of lovely old houses.
Thank you Jennifer! I just want to skip to the choosing fun wallpaper/fabrics/tiles part of the adventure 😂❤
I hope you find a good house! My little English brain cannot comprehend living somewhere as big (and hot) as the US. As a fellow adult child living with parents for financial reasons I sympathise
Thank you Ella! I agree it is too hot here, give me London, Bath, or Edinburgh any day ❤
I'd love to see you pattern drafting some vintage Halloween costumes. I'd love to see how to do that.
i haven't finished listening but you've been great company for me while i've been laid up in bed dealing with some weird head stuff. but i wanted to say, if you love stories about found family, bad people doing good things, and crime stories, you might enjoy the Murderbot diaries (which i absolutely sped through this past week) which is a sci fi book series following a part human/part bot construct, designed to protect humans on survey missions, who has hacked its governor module and it follows the decisions this character makes. it's so good:)
I have read the first one! I just got the second to read on my upcoming travels ✨ I also liked "A Long Way to a Small angry Planet" which has very Firefly tv show vibes and is a little on the wholesome side but quite good. I hope you've been feeling better!
I was born in Moab! We actually lived in Green River, Ut but my mom happened to be in Moab on a shopping trip when she went into labor. We moved from Utah to California when I was 3 or 4 though, so my memories of Utah are summers spent with my grandparents. It's beautiful. Sending all the love and good posoy energy that you find your drea home ❤️
It's such a pretty state, Utah has truly gorgeous land!! I like the idea of going into Moab for shopping though, it feels like such a tiny town to me 😅 They have a great donut shop and an amazing pizza place though, so life's true essentials are covered.
It may help to lock in on a place first--- and then find a mortgage broker who is licensed for that state + a realtor in the area, so they can walk you through the process. the realtor doesn't have to specialize in historic homes-- it is more that they will have insider knowledge that you don't (e.g. a house that hasn't been listed yet), and can tailor the selection to your preference. the mortgage broker will be able to walk you through the entire process of getting your finances in check, putting in an offer, explaining all the weird steps, so it can minimize the stress of a situation for you. Best of luck!
I wish I could, but I really am looking for architecture first, location second 😂 I'm pretty set on New York because it seems like a good central spot for exploring further around in general on day trips and becuase places I can afford do come up! Otherwise outside Chicago or outside Pittsburg are second options, but I wouldn't be able to drive to Mood fabrics from either 🤣
Best of luck on your trip to NY! Also, your brain is soup, which is completely OK, you have a crap-tonne (that's metric, not imperial) of things going on! ... listening to these always just makes me wish I could give you a hug however <3
Thank you Robyn ❤
I am so excited for you and your future new home! Keep going, you're doing a good job.
Thank you Tammy!
First: New Yorker's say Albany with an "awl" sound. Second: no one is every fully confident of the decisions they make in moving or buying a house, we hope we're doing the right thing and jump. My husband and I bought a new house in January, I cannot tell you how many times we asked each other if we were doing the right thing. Turns out yes we did the right thing. When I left home there were a lot of conversations about well when your gone we won't be able to help you. At the time I thought it was a bad thing but it ended up being a good thing. I learned to handle all the things I used to ask for help with myself. Whatever happens you have yourself and you are more than capable of handling it. That was the lesson. I hope you love the town you're going to see and find the right house for you even if it's not what you thought you were looking for.
Good to know! As a Californian originally, all east coast pronunciations elude me 😂
I know you have your heart set on New York. While the state is blue and NYC is blue, my husband was listening and said there may be pockets of upstate New York that are blue, there’s a lot of red pockets too in the smaller areas. Have you considered Virginia? It’s a blue state, it has some amazing homes, closer to your parents if they are in NC. Under $200,000 near Williamsburg in quick search and I did not look at the condition or requirements for up keep, I found this https://www.homesinhamptonroadsarea.com/search/quick?city=Williamsburg&minbeds=1&page=1&perpage=12&soldproperty=0&sortby=lowestprice&type=quick I’ve purchased 3 houses in past 25 years. 1 st was not my dream home but it was only 10 yrs old and it was fine but small. It was what we could afford. I got divorced and bought a little 4split with a great kitchen but only 1000sqft. Then I found my husband and we decided to move to another province and we thought we found a lovely community and our forever home. It’s 75 years old, we have renovated the bathrooms, 1 bedroom, basement flooring and added decks and a greenhouse. The community is going through a transition losing its primary income source and industry so we aren’t sure if we will stay here but the point is… It’s ok to find something that will do for the next 5-10 years but might not be the perfect forever home. Or even perfect forever location. I wish you the best in your house hunt and with the bank. I watch and listen to your videos every night. I have purchased a few pattern drafting books, all the Time Life Art of Sewing books from 1974-1976, singer sewing books from the same time, a few other late 60s to 90s pattern and techniques books, plus a Butterick dressmakers guide from 1928 from used book stores. And I bought the school textbook you use so I can follow a long. My cutting table is now clean. I can start and you will be my guide. The one thing I’d love to see as maybe a short like 10 min video series is how to draw the fashion figures. Like, how do I look at a photo in a catalog or in my brain and translate that to a drawing. I have a short or sleeveless cowl neck, sheer crepe fabric, black dress that flares out to an A line skirt, tucks in at the waist. I have a lovely burgundy purple silky jaquard weave patterned fabric to make the under slip like the blue one you made on the channel. But I can’t figure out how to draw it. I’d also like to see shorter but more detailed step by step. I’m all for your 1 hour plus instructional videos and I’d watch that all blinking day but the algorithms never appreciate art. So what about breaking those videos down in to drafting… cutting… sewing components and slowing the video down on the fiddley parts to explain in detail bag lining a vest and the shoulder parts for example. I’ve watched both or 3 videos several times but it’s too fast. I get it but I don’t get it. Then post parts 1-4 every Thursday it’s 1 video but 4 videos. YouTube pushes part videos to me constantly. I love your content. I can’t wait for today’s video. Thursdays are the best days. Sorry for the novel I did not edit. I hope autocorrect didn’t go rogue.
And that might be an apartment. Ignore. I couldn’t get into the listing itself.
I've been cruising FB Marketplace for entertainment, and I saw a house the other day available for $7. USD. If I could attach an image here, I would, because it was internet gold. From the obvious red flags in the images (only the outside) to the toxic attitude of the seller....
There are often Victorian's that still look very cool from the outside, are listed for 40k, and then the photos from the inside show that the structure is being held up only by determined colonies of thick mold and termite dust 😬 Beyond my reserves to reconstruct!
Chin up Bianca. You really sound so down to me in this episode. 😬 I believe more than anything out of all the religions out of all the stuff I've ever read everything happens exactly in the right timing do not ever push it that's when mistakes and errors and things you don't want happen. It's great to be excited and have daydreams but in reality if it's not working back off a little bit. These things come from my own experience and I always wish you the best I hope the time and Moab really gives you some different perspective. Enjoy your life. It's all that matters your love and your joy ❣️❣️❣️
Must say my jaw dropped when you said that place you like was still near enough to drive to as in 5 hrs! I'm in UK and 5 hrs would get nearly right across the country! I can't get my head around just how big the USA is. I left home at 18 and moved to a different county which was 30 miles away from where my "home" was in London and I had really bad withdrawal symptoms!! I persevered and stayed there and had my family, who mostly still live in that area and have now moved 4 hrs away to other side of the country. As for your videos, I must be truthful and say it's the tutorials I have enjoyed the most, mainly because you have taught me how to draft patterns for myself. But I do watch the other videos as well as I get a lot of inspiration from your designs. Good luck on your trips and with your house hunting xx
I think it’s closer to 7, really. My brain says it’s 5 hours from me, and I’m 2 hours closer…
"Me and my resume are just so strange." Me, too. I wish I could support you more, even if you made less content. Meanwhile, leaves out here have started to turn, they should be lovely for you next month! Fingers crossed that you drive past a suitable house, right as someone is putting a "For Sale" sign in the window!✨
I wanted to add that Glimmerglass Festival is located near Albany. If you end up in the area, you'll have some great opera/musical theatre stuff to check out!
Perhaps a good time to travel to your potential home locations to relax and socialise with likeminded people? If you fit in filming a video of sight seeing you can call it a business expense. edited to add I listened further and now understand you will be going soon with your mum
Fairy dust ✨Fairy dust ✨ Fairy dust!!!!! ✨✨✨
Love your content! As a visual and quirky learner you have taught me so much! I pray you enjoy your trips, find your perfect house, and able to relieve some stress.
Thank you Christian!
Turn on more ads! Make the platform work for you. Yes it can be slightly annoying for viewers but you don't have to go crazy with it or start doing sponser deals. Even if it's just adding one mid video ad to every video, you DO deserve it and the viewers will understand. I think I've commented this to Angela Clayton since her tentative return, but I would support you on patreon even without the "perks" because what you do is so beneficial for anyone in this hobby. You are already doing the work of teaching so many techniques and sharing your experience and expertise that you don't need to go above and beyond to make supporting you "worth it" for us.

When I got married at 38 (just did the math - 42!), my mom admitted that she could "finally stop worrying about me." Never mind that I had moved to a new city at 18, graduated uni, worked several jobs, changed cities twice again, got a college diploma, moved one more time, got a good job, paid off my student loans and finally bought my own condo 4 years prior! Any one of these is an accomplishment in adulting. I expect they will feel less anxious when you make your found family, whatever form that takes.
Oh but only a "spouse" can provide real security of course 😩 Generational differences!
Lots of thoughts, I’ll get back with them later. But, don’t forget to stop at the wacky UFO gas station/ truck stop/ jerky store place. They have (or did last time I went through) some really wild sodas.
Blowing lots of fairy dust and sending prayers your way. We’re here for you! Step out in faith, knowing that the right house is waiting for you 💖 Sending best wishes from Down Under 🥰💐🇦🇺
Thank you Rhonda!!
Buying a house is such a long and difficult process! Hearing you talk about it makes me vividly recall how crazy it was for us 9 years ago... And we were looking locally, I can't imagine how much more difficult it is for you! For what is worth, I don't feel like you "owe" us anything. You were up front about house hunting this year and we're expecting moments of quiet here and there. We'll be here for you when you have time and energy to post! Also, your look books have consistently surpassed each of the previous ones!! You're an incredible artist and I'm thoroughly enjoying all of your content 😊 In terms of audience attention, what are your thoughts on a collaboration? Perhaps coaching another YouTuber through making a block, then using it to reproduce a vintage pattern they would otherwise need to size up/down? Just an idea, take it or leave it 💜 Sending all the good vibes to help you find your unicorn house!
P.S. I was listening to this while using my block pattern to make a shoulder princess vest pattern. Thank you for sharing your skills with the world!! 🙏
We adore what you put out and wholeheartedly understand the ebb and flow of life. I think we all understand the, "y'all deserve more", feeling but I know that's not how I feel.
100% agree!
When my kids moved out I was grieving. (But just for a week or two. 😆) I'm sure that whoever is not supporting you will come around. It is the most natural thing to move out and choose your own path. I hope you find a house you can call home and am so looking forward to get the news. I find you really inspiring and love your videos.
Thank you Maja! ❤
I feel you on the house buying front! For what it's worth, and maybe this is just my part of the country, but I've been looking seriously since May and my realtor has said multiple times how weird the market is right now. Things in my area used to be on the market for a couple of days and now if a place sell in under 6 weeks it's a big deal. Also because of that prices are slowly coming down. I'm crossing my fingers that you find a place in your budget but know that it's also possible to offer under asking-price right now in ways it wasn't feasible even a year ago. We're rooting for you Bianca!
Thank you Caitlin! I struggle with dreaming about all the perfect houses that I have seen over the years before I had the capital ready...so rude of other folks to snatch them up!
I wish you find the house of your dreams soon. 🍂
Thank you Tereza!
I’m very excited for you. You feel it’s time which means it’s TIME. Someone I know is fond of saying, upon delivering sad or emotional news, “I love you and you love me, so we’ll both get over it when the swelling goes down”. Your friends and family may be feeling the emotional hurt of your leaving but they will survive, and so shall you.🥰 You’ll be a plane trip away and zoom calls have become quite the rage recently 😊
Thank you Masil! To be fair it has felt like past-due-time for me for about 10 years soooo... I just finally have a stable job/income (thank you!) so it's actually feasible at last!
