Last minute hat making sneak peek
Well, instead of filming the last few looks as planned today, I made a long mermaid skirt in the gold and black brocade (the fabric pictured behind the gold hat above) and made two hats. Filming the last handful of looks tomorrow! Then it's edit edit edit time, thank goodness it's already started and the music and stuff is already in place 😅
The gold hat is a large disc of the same fabric as the haori I made recently here on Patreon. I wanted to make a hat inspired by the sun crowns seen worn by ancient Egyptian deities. Of course worn behind the head it would also look like a saintly halo instead, but this is a giant gold disc floating above my face basically. I added a "feather salad", which is what milliner Philip Treacy calls his abstract feather assemblage hats, in black with a few longer bare ostrich feather barbs . Finished with a sprinkling of heat set crystals in black as well, of course.
The second image is harder to decipher. I made this one over the weekend as it needed time to dry fully. What you're looking at is a lace applique, in a sorta oversized collar shape, soaked in watered down pva glue just like I use to stiffen silk for flower making. I made a "face" shaped oval out of foil and draped the lower portion of the applique over it so that it would take the form and behave like a mask. The rest of the applique is arranged flat and slightly overlapped at the center. The result was then peeled from the foil once dried. I added a wire support to help hold the flat portion up above the face and then, yes, dusted the whole thing in black rhinestones to catch the light.
Not pictured is one more hat covered in laser cut super thin plastic butterflies that are sold as decorations on Amazon. I cut the base out of the weird vinyl stuff I used for the "Dutch" headdress I made earlier, which was a silly choice knowing I needed to make the hat speedily this morning, as hot glue doesn't stick to that vinyl, so I had to sew everything together first. Vinyl sewn onto wire for stability and possibility, then that resulting base stitched onto a sinamay fascinator blank. Luckily I sewed some lace appliques onto the vinyl, as I could then cheat-- carefully gluing the butterflies to the lace where they would stick.
Are we interested in hat making? I didn't film the process for these three hats (because hello time crunch!) but I would happily make more of these styles or others in the future!
I also made a black and gold version of the filigree chain mail lantern bag, a giant shawl, a pencil skirt, a beret, and finished sequinning a partlet this weekend, but you'll see all of those things very soon! Thank you for your support ❤

yes, hat videos, please! Hats are so out of everyday fashion and making them on my own feels like too much of a leap for my skills. I saw your creations in the lookbook and i'm very fascinated, I'd love to see how they work!
YES I would love to see how you made any/all the hats for Sanctus!
I've just watched the video which features these amazing creations. The Gold Sun Disc hat NEEDS to go to Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. NEEDS, I tell thee!
Hi You hardly have to ask me that question. Of course I'd love to see millinery. There aren't enough good millinery content out there in the world. I can always enjoy the hats you make. Here it's already 4th of July, so I'm counting down now. I just hope you have some time set aside for some R&R after this ordeal. Yours, Ann
