Introducing CORE Ratings

I’ve published the full introduction to CORE Ratings, the new Context & Opponent-Relative Efficiency rating available through CollegeFootballData.

CORE is now live through the API and website. This article explains the two-stage idea behind it: compare play-level PPA with what the game situation normally produces, then adjust the accumulated offensive and defensive results for opponent strength.

It also covers how to read offense, defense, and overall values; where the rating can improve an analysis; what CORE deliberately excludes; and how to retrieve it through the API. The final 2025 chart provides a completed-season example before the first 2026 ratings arrive.
