Housekeeping--Annual Patrons and Live Event Tonight

Hello, everyone! I hope this Thursday is treating you as well as a Thursday in 2020, the Nurse Ratched of years, can be expected to treat anyone.

Two notes of interest to some or all of you before I disappear into the last chapters of this bloody stubborn book!

One, the annoying PBS/NPR pledge-drive style barfyness we must engage in so we can live to eat another day:

Patreon has launched Annual Subscriptions, so you can lock in a whole year of benefits at one go and not worry about monthly anythings. If you sign up for a year, you'll get a 10% discount (so a Mad Technician tier patronage, which would normally come out to $60 a year, would only cost you $54). I wouldn't recommend this if you like to go up and down over various months depending on whether a particular reward appeals to you, but it's there if you want it!

Two, more fun:

I'll be "in conversation with Jeff Vandermeer, author of the Southern Reach Trilogy and City of Saints and Madmen, tonight at 6:30pm PST/9:30pm EDT! Jeff has been one of my mentors since before my first book came out, and this is our first public event together! You have to sign up, but that's only so we don't get Zoom bombed because the world is terrible and it keeps happening to authors.

So RSVP and come watch us here: https://www.booksincommonnw.com/upcoming-events/jeff-vandermeer-amp-catherynne-valente-in-conversation

Interesting conversation with Vandermeer. Just one thing that threw me for a loop: who leaves their butter out? Is that a regional thing? Now that I'm in Maine, am I supposed to be a butter-in or a butter-out person? Help me! I want to conform! lol.

that link seems to be to the zoom itself. Is there a separate link for RSVP?

or rather more specifically, that link leads to a page with another link that says its for registration but seems to be just the zoom link itself

How (if at all) does the annual thing change what you get? I wouldn't be interested if it meant less for the artists.

It does mean I get less, because of the discount. It also means I don't get that smaller, regular amount every month because it all comes upfront (which is nice too), and that's what's really key for artists and made Patreon a killer app, the steady income rather than unpredictable chunks.

On the annual subscriptions, do you get less, or are they discounting their portion of the fee so you do just as well? I can see why they might want fewer larger transactions (reduces credit card fees), but the main point is to support the artists -- so which is better for you?

Well, I'm not making too big a deal of this because in many ways it isn't better for me. I get money upfront which is nice because it's a particularly bad time with COVID and all, but I lose the regular monthly income because it all comes at once, and I do get less because of the discount. So it's kind of a wash? But they're offering it so I felt I had to explain it's available.

Excited! Besides your writing advice I have found his Book Life very helpful 😃

Conversation sounds great, though I think it may be at 9:30PM EST ... at least according to their event page.
